Title: Rear heat shield removal! Post by koiroy on 07/11/04 at 07:40:41 I need to remove the rear most heat shield to tighten up the muffler bolts on my new exhaust. The clamp mechanism has the nut "inside" a square metal housing (sort of) No way to get a socket on the nut, or a box wrench for that matter. Any ideas? Someone on the forum must have removed this shield at some point. Thanks folks. |
Title: Re: Rear heat shield removal! Post by Greg_650 on 07/11/04 at 07:47:32 Loosen the right side footpeg mounts to give more clearance on the front heat shield. Then loosen the header bolts on the engine. This should allow you more room to swing the pipe out for a wrench, etc. |
Title: Re: Rear heat shield removal! Post by Honda_fan on 07/11/04 at 17:17:55 You'll have to also remove the two mounting bolts on the muffler to do this. I just had it off this afternoon to measure what is needed ot adapt a Sportster muffler. |
Title: Re: Rear heat shield removal! Post by koiroy on 07/12/04 at 13:48:10 ::)Remember that its the rear heat shield I have to remove. Even if I loosen the header bolts, it doesn't make taking the clamp off any easier. No socket or wrench will get at it. There must be some other trick. :'( |

Title: Re: Rear heat shield removal! Post by koiroy on 07/12/04 at 17:43:57 Hey Greg, that's OK. I got more info from Suzuki Savage Google homepage. Apparently the entire exhaust has to removed from the bike in order to access the 2 philips screws that attaches this clamp. As I said there, as great as this bike is, there are several instances where an important item needs doing and a major obstacle stares you in the face, much like changing the spark plug!!!! :o |

That you can do by moving the exhaust out slightly from the engine. The clamp bolt should be right by the oil sight window. |

Title: Re: Rear heat shield removal! Post by Greg_650 on 07/13/04 at 14:40:36 I might be forgetting a few of the minor details since I first had a SuperTrapp and now have a Raask pipe. I haven't been stock in over 3 years. |
Title: Re: Rear heat shield removal! Post by Honda_fan on 07/13/04 at 19:31:35 Koiroy, Just pull the whole assembly. 6 bolts and your'e done. I had mine off in under 10 minutes last weekend. You can then get at the heat shield or clamp bolts at will. |

Same here...but the "Little Devil" is right. We tend to just go to the most direct looking bolts sometimes when a more complicated looking route is even easier. I was also just thinking of tightening the clamp, and not removing the shield.... |
