Title: What Happened???
Post by momat on 07/12/04 at 04:05:07

Friday July 9th I looked at a 1998 Savage,  Saturday July 10th, called my insurance Co. at 8:00 am had the insurance transfered from my Rebel to the Savage,  went to the bank got a bank check,  went to dealer about 9:30, He had it on consignment,  road my new bike out of the dealers about 10:00 am.
Rode it home with my husband following me,  pulled into gas station about 5 miles down the road,  it died when I stopped.  My husband filled it with premium gas, ( it had been setting for awhile so we thought it better to run a tank of good stuff through it)
Rode on home about 5 more miles,  rode between 50 and 55 mph.
Had a cup of coffee admired it,  started it back up drove to the neighbors about 1/4 mile to show it to them,  rode back home pulled into yard stopped,  it died again.
Wiped a few fingar prints off,  cleaned out the bags,  put my for bag on it,  checked the oil,  opened the fill plug (thinking there was a dip stick like the rebel,  then found the sight glass,  when nothing below the fill plug.
About 4:00pm we deceided to go for a ride,  run a little of the good gas throught it,  and have dinner, about 15 miles or so away,  it ran good,  again ran between 50 and 55,  (I've just started riding again after 20 years,  haven't road since I was in my 30's  so taking it easy espically with a new bike.)
Pulled up to a stop sign,  it make a kinda speeding up noise,  a pop and smoke started rolling out just in front of my right knee,  I thought it was going to catch fire,  reached down and shut it off.
My husband pulled up beside me and said what happened?  Right like I really know.....  He pulled on over in the shade,  I pushed over there to clear the intersection.  Turned the key back on,  held in the clutch,  hit the started,  Nothing.  He got to looking,  the fill plug was gone,  I looked down,  no oil on my jeans,  started walking back to the stop sign,  there in the road is the plug,  about 2 feet from where I was.
He road back home got the truck and trailer,  I stayed with my pretty bike,  that wouldn't run.  28 miles  was what I had put on it.
Any one got any ideas on what happened? ???
Oh and the cafe was closed too.......

The stalling might be helped by turning the idle screw to make the engine idle faster. My Savage stalled and this fixed it. Can't help on the oil plug.

Thanks all for the Welcome,  and yes it still has oil in it,  and I didn't have any on me or the bike,  didn't strip the threads either.
Took it to the dealer today and he said he'd stand behind it,  and fix it.
So we will see.

Double check something for me....

What position is your fuel lever on? Make sure its not P for Prime....

I gotta hunch but its a wild one that involves mystery and intrege and a catholic schoolgirl outfit....and well... erm... uh... nevermind....  :-X

And have the dealer change the oil just in case.
