Title: Anyone broken a belt?
Post by koiroy on 07/13/04 at 15:58:20

Not that I am expecting it to happen with only 22k on the bike, but has anyone had the drive belt break while riding?. I can imagine the potential catastrophy if its anything like a chain drive breaking. Any thoughts?

MY SCOOTER HAS 56 K ON IT THE BELT HAS 2 HOLES AND THEY ARE ABOUT 2 YEARS OLD . IT DOES NOT EVEN LOOK LIKE BREAKING AND AT $400 AUS . I HOPE IT DONT . I HAVE HEARD THE HARLEY HAS A REPAIR LINK FOR BELTS BUT I DO NOT KNOW IF IT WOULD FIT THE SAVAGE . BUT IF IT WORRIES YOU . YOU MIGHT PICK UP A ROUGH CHEAPIE AT THE WRECKERS TO CARRIE ON LONG TRIPS .

Cool.  Mine has only 13K miles on it and shows no wear.  Looks like it will be around for a while.

My dealer tells me he has yet to replace one...

Now that could mean a couple of things...

he is a dealer so he is naturaly lying...

His prices are so high no one would dare ask him too...

However he said it to me as if he ment it to be "they last a long time".

Take your pick!  ;D

What was the cause?  High temp?  Too tight?  Rocks?

I ALLWAYS CHECK MY BELT AND PULLIES WHEN LEAVING A DIRT ROAD OR A NEWLY SEALED ROAD .NEWLY SEALED ROADS SEEM TO THROW UP STICKY STONES WHICH ARE COVERED IN TAR AND YOU CAN BET ONE WILL STICK TO YOUR BELT. YOU CAN USALLY TELL WHEN YOU HAVE A STONE STUCK IN YOUR PULLIE AS YOU GET A DIFFERENT VIBRATION . IT DOES NOT TAKE LONG TO CHECK .EVEN THOUGH I HAVE BEEN CAUGHT TWICE .I NOW PULL OVER AND CHECK IT EVERY TIME ;)

I must have missed this....yes, rocks.  As Al states above they can get in there if you just pull into a gravel driveway...and in my case, I live off a gravel road.

The biggest reason is that the rear fender overhangs the swing arm and small rocks can bounce around the fender, hit the swing arm and get into the belt.  It doesn't happen very often but it is possible.  I hear them going "ping ping" pretty often on my street, but have never found any damage.

Since I removed my belt guards (and all evidence of their previous existence), I fabricated a "mud flap" to the front of the fender that hangs inside the swing arm to keep stuff off the swing arm.

Tumi got 30,000 before his belt failed.
For anyone who hasn't, I consider this a must read article;
From The Thumper Page;

Hello, I was told someone had mentioned my Long Term Report on Thumper Page. I was always a bit disappointed by the report which seemed to be skewed during the HTML tagging. If anyone's interested, there's a slightly reworked edition in my website http://personal.inet.fi/business/tumi and choose --> 'articles'.
By the way, the second generic belt only lasted about 16k miles. I won't lurk around Savage forums that much these days, so send private mail for further opinions.

They guy that I bought my Savage from told me his some had taken the bike completely apart and instead of take the time to take the belt off the right way he cut it!

The guy told he it cost him about $200 for the new belt.
