Title: 140/80-15 or 140/90-15???? Post by savagethumper on 07/21/04 at 20:51:48 Will it hurt anything to put a 140/90-15 instead of a 140/80-15? It seems like there's plenty of room for the tire to be a bit taller. It would be no big deal, but I seem to come across a lot of 140/90's at all the local shops, but no 140/80's. |

Title: Re: 140/80-15 or 140/90-15???? Post by Greg_650 on 07/22/04 at 02:44:22 This one has gone around on a lot of forums...I believe that the 140/90 will fit on the Savage with the only exception being, if you have the saddle bag supports installed... It seems that the tires will rub the extended bolt heads at certain times when 140/90's are installed. Note: it will also lower your indicated speed about 3 MPH too. |

Title: Re: 140/80-15 or 140/90-15???? Post by Autif on 07/22/04 at 08:12:07 Yup! I agree 100% with what greg said. i installed metzeler me 880 140/90-15 on the rear. i do not have saddle bags. working out great for me. the indicated speed is about 4.6% less. so if you are going 32 it will show 30, if you are going 60 it will show 63 etc. i do not see anything in my bike that may interfere with the tires, but then may be the "extended bolts" are only with the saddles. is that right greg? |

That is what I heard in Be_Savage from a guy that had saddle bags and the 140/90 tires. He had to modify the bolts for clearance....but that was after he discovered the tire rubbing. My tire is the 140/80, so I haven't had a problem. |

Title: Re: 140/80-15 or 140/90-15???? Post by cphilip on 07/22/04 at 11:17:50 I just put on a 140/90 and I got saddle bag brackets and no rubbing and fairly good clearance from what I can see. . I am watching though. And would change that bolt if it looked like I needed too. But would have to go a good long ways of travel to get close to them bolt heads from what I can see. A good long ways. I suspect a heavier person than I or two up fatso's might get worrysome. There is one bolt in particular that is the culpret from what I can see on this bike. Its a good three almost inches away of travel before it would hit and then it would just knick the at the tire edge. Of course tires vary from manufacturer to manufacturer so its possible one type of 140/90 would fit fine and one would not. Many variances in these things. These particular tires do not. |

You mean if the speedometer indicates 60 you are travelling at 63mph. |

Yes, it does...but that really isn't very unusual in the bike world. A lot of bikes do this. Especially bikes with dual front brake rotors. |

Yep a bigger diameter = fewer revolutions for the same speed...or more distance for the same revolutions. And the transmission doesn't know the difference ::) |

You might be right. I think the guy that brought it up had installed Metzelers and he tried preload changes and it didn't change it....of course, it was all by email so who really knows....he might have had something else wrong. |

Title: Re: 140/80-15 or 140/90-15???? Post by savagethumper on 07/22/04 at 20:53:41 Thank you for the input guys. I do have saddle bag supports, so I will be careful if I get them. Another question, though, does it matter if I get a tubeless tire? Can I put a tube in a tubeless tire? What is the difference in the way they are put together? (tube vs. Tubeless) |

Title: Re: 140/80-15 or 140/90-15???? Post by AL_DOWN_UNDER on 07/23/04 at 00:16:20 I HAVE A 140X90X15 ON MY 86 NO RUBBING BUT I DONT HAVE SADDLE BAGS . ITS A BIT OF A BUGGER TO GET OFF AND ON . HAVE TO REMOVE No PLATE AND LIFT BELT GAURD. WHICH MEANS REMOVING LOWER LEFT SHOCKY BOLT. I CANNOT REMBER IF I HAD TO LIFT THE BELT GAURD WITH THE THINNER TYRE I DONT THINK SO AS I REMEBER SWAERING A LOT THIS TIME, AND I DONT USALLY DO THAT ::) |

Title: Re: 140/80-15 or 140/90-15???? Post by klx650sm2002 on 07/23/04 at 02:13:58 My speedo is 18.5% fast because of the 17" front instead of the 21", gives me something to think about in speed limited areas. Clive W |

You can not run "tubeless' on the Savage because it is a spoke wheel. Spoke wheels cannot be sealed. You can run "tubeless" tires though but you have to use a tube anyway. I'm not sure, but I think that most tires are rated "tubeless" regardless of the type of wheels they are mounted on. |

Title: Re: 140/80-15 or 140/90-15???? Post by WD on 04/16/06 at 20:56:11 Shawn, it is 140mm wide, and 90% of that from bead lip to top of tread. But only at sidewall inflation pressures. And only when new. The width is a static figure, the height changes with pressure loss and wear. If you plan to run saddlebags, i recommend you invest in a 130/90/15. Will turn more readily (increased lean angle, 10mm does in fact make a difference) and you won't have rubbing issues. -WD |

Should work just fine. I've got 12.5" shocks & the fender's WAY up over the tire. My 140/90-15 Metzler has nearly an inch of clearance from the swingarm. |

Gotta agree with Babbalou. I have the 12.5" Progressives and there's way more than enough clearance with my 140/90-15 Dunlop 491. The stock shocks are 10.5" and the 11" or 11.5" Progressives should do very well. |
