:-*

From http://www.b50.org/special.htm:
http://www.b50.org/bazuka.jpg

"1971 BSA B50 Frame and Suzuki Savage 652 cc four stroke single motor.

We put one of our custom Gold Star seats and a
BSA 4 gallon tank on it, along with new Acront alloy
rims with stainless spokes laced to a conical rear hub
and the Triumph double leading shoe front brake hub.

As you can see the finished bike has all of the flavor
of an old BSA, but with the power and convenience of a
modern bike...which makes it run and handle like a dream.

It's an absolute riot to blast through the North Georgia
mountains on this great bike.

Alright Greg 650, time for you to make one of these.  You seem Savage-educated enough to pull this off.

"Pull off"  building a chopper?  Well, maybe, but my particular interest is to have a different type of bike than a chopper.  The Savage is easy handling even with the 37 (?) degree rake because of the light weight and lean geometry, but to extend the front end even more is not in my picture.

To me, choppers always seem better when sitting still and I prefer bikes that handle well on twistie mountain roads or running down a dirt road  :o

Greg, I was talking about building a Cafe' Racer Savage.  We've all seen how talented you are at building up your Savage.  You know, oddly enough, that bike ,sans motor, really resembles the Suzuki gs250t I had a few years back.  Even though it was a 250, the powerplant looked bigger than the one in my Savage.  I had a guy at the tire store ask me if my bike was a freakin' 125cc.  He insisted I was full of it, when I told him it was a 650.  I had to show him the tags on the bike to prove it.

So, why do you ride a Savage??  It has lousy ground clearance, even modest twisties drag the underside.  The bike's 70's suspension doesn't do much to keep the tires against the tarmac, either.

> ...or running down a dirt road

On dirt roads the LS handles like a Buick.  The steering geometry makes the front wheel floppy when maneuvering rough roads at slow speeds.  The minimal suspension travel beats you up on anything but smooth graded dirt.  You can't stand on the pegs.  The lack of adequate ground clearance makes the crankcase a clear target.

You should be riding a Kawa KLR or Suzuki DR.

I certainly see no need to qualify this outburst with a reply.

Yep.  I appreciate that too.  There is another guy in Be_Savage doing the same BSA/Savage job like shown above.  But I don't know his progress.  With a shorter rake the Savage engine would be even more at home in the mountains.  I say go fo it.  Your bike is what you want to make of it, and I'll enjoy seeing how it goes.

Now, I understand what you meant....myself with a chopper?  I've ridden them and they are plenty cool rolling down the interstate.  But really what I'm creating is a Rat bike.  Light weight, higher power, low on the chrome and lean....and to get the most out of less.

By the way, a guy with a Buell thought mine was a 250, so I know what you mean.  Most people are not aware of anything above that size in a single...unless it is an Enfield of course.

BTW - thanks for the compliment.  I've shaved a few pounds off the bike and squeezed out a couple more HP, but it is only a start.  I still have next winter to tinker with it again.... ::)

What?? It was no outburst.  Get a grip, hotshot, it was 'all' true.  If you do dirt roads, you'll have more capability with a dual purpose bike.  If you like to carve twisties, you'll have some scary moments on the LS when the peg brackets grind the asphalt--I speak seriously from experience.  The LS is a fine bike, but it has it limitations.

I need to get a grip?

Greg650 is an all round good guy and the Be_Savage site is not the same without Him.

Thanks Clive I appreciate that, but don't worry about it.  There were argumentative types in Be_Savage too.

BTW - I was only talking about the occassional dirt road side trip.  I never expect the Savage to be like your KLX anyway  :P

Back in 89/90 Honda marketed the GB500TT in the U.S.; an Isle of Man styled cafe with a 500cc single cylinder power plant ... beautiful machine ... the LS' mill would suit a similarly styled Bike perfectly ... dout if 'Zuki would ever go that way though ...

I don't know.   I'm hearing that the Savage/S40 has been 'found' and they are becoming more popular.  We are also seeing, because of gasoling prices, a tremendous increase in motorcycle sales and registrations -- lots of new riders rather than old riders trading up.

The Tempter 400 would be a fantastic starter/city bike.  A Tempter 650 would be to kill for.  Not to mention that the Tempter is easily remade into a beautiful Cafe Racer:

As a previous and diehard owner of a Goldstar, I have patterned my remake of my Savage after the Goldstar to some degree.    I like that kind of "basic machine look " of a motorcycle.   The classic clubmans tank on a Goldstar was a 5 gallon tank, and I have been on  the look for one for a couple of years.  I prefer the aluminum version, but a fiberglass is good too.  They are expensive to get, the aluminum tank costs about $500 and the fiberglass is not far behind....I am saving my penny's.
Regarding the suspension of the Savage, as mentioned by  one of the Gregs, the ground clearance and handling characteristics of the Savage can be improved a lot by putting on a set of 12.5-13.5" Progressive shocks and replacing the front forks, or at least going to 20W fork oil.

in the origional post, they indicate they put a suzi 650 into an old '71 bsa frame, etc. :P  While I'd love to get that crazy, I think Lancer is heading in the right direction..have you looked into how much modification would be needed to put on such a tank?  And maybee a solo saddle with rack- I know, but I am a commuter.
