Title: Good Windshield for Shorter Riders Post by Susan on 08/06/04 at 06:46:18 Just thought I would share my thoughts as a smaller rider (just under five feet). I recently installed a Memphis Slims 15" windshield and am very happy with it. The 15" works great for me (tilted in). It is easy to see over and I do not get any helmet buffeting. They say it is better to look over it vs. through it -- if you get caught in the rain it is hard to see through a rain splattered windshield. Of course, the right size depends on your height. I am posting this because it was something I really struggled with -- it was hard to figure out which size windshield would be right for me. In the end I followed some guidelines I found online which said when you are sitting on the bike, the top of the windshield should be between the tip and bridge of your nose. With that in mind, a taller rider would typically want a taller windshield (the Slim comes in 17" too). It is a quick change one so it comes on and off in under a minute which I like since I like to ride without it too. It was very easy to install -- took less than 15 minutes for the initial mount. Since I have a purple bike, I got the one with the purple gradient: I like the way it looks with the purple -- it could be a girl thing. ;D The windshield is available in clear and a solar tint as well. 7/12/05 -- Updated pic link Here's a pic: http://wwwsvc01.ninja.ev1.bikepics.net/pics/suzuki-savage-04-bikepics-223086.jpg |
Title: Re: Good Windshield for Shorter Riders Post by sunny on 08/06/04 at 09:54:55 funny you should post this. one of the windsheild brackets(for lack of better term) that are glued to the sheild came apart this morning on my ride in. will probably use jb weld for a quick fix today. but a new windsheild is in my somewhat immediate future. the other(previously broken) bracket was epoxied back on by my boss using the weld and it held up fine in today's very windy weather... |

Title: Re: Good Windshield for Shorter Riders Post by sunny on 08/06/04 at 14:46:23 well, we shall see if my windsheild, currently held in place by zipties, will get home without being lost on the road. jb weld needs 24 hours to cure. and the zipties have a tensile strength of 50 pounds. |
Title: Re: Good Windshield for Shorter Riders Post by savagethumper on 08/06/04 at 20:49:01 I have a small shield that clamps to the bars, but I really don't use it. It was designed for more straight bars, but it'll work with a little fiddling. Sunny, if you read this, your welcome to it if you ever ride through Venus. I have a SlipStreamer that mounts to the forks, and curves outward around the grips, and I absolutely love it. Won't ever take it off. A guy on a Harley crashed in our ditch and I helped him out quite a bit. Just so happened to be head mechanic at a bike store, and he got it for me for dealer cost, and gave me a $50 gift certificate to Outback Steakhouse, too. |
Title: Re: Good Windshield for Shorter Riders Post by PerrydaSavage on 08/07/04 at 02:34:42 :(Well I am 5'-4 1/2" height with a 29-30" inseam and a few weeks ago picked up a Roadchrome M200 deflector shield (almost identical to National Cycle) and within 2 minutes of having the thing mounted on my Savage, I had it taken off again ... my short height combined with the Savage's low seat found me looking thru the shield instead of over it and I found the resulting glare kinda disconcerting ... I like to have a completely clear view of the road immeadiately in front of my Bike ... Bike Shop took it back no questions asked and I rec'd a full refund. |

Yep, better to look over than through, for the very reason you state...and as you say, without the helmet buffeting too. The Memphis Shades site is a good one with all the dimensions and guidelines. We've bought from them too. No more bugs on the face shield now 8) |
Title: Re: Good Windshield for Shorter Riders Post by gitarzan on 08/07/04 at 06:10:44 MY kind of windshield: http://www.classicgoggles.com/goggles/images/products/510121.jpg |
Title: Re: Good Windshield for Shorter Riders Post by Greg_650 on 08/07/04 at 06:15:58 I have a pair of those....kinda adds a bumble bee look. They are "over the glasses" goggles too. Would be perfect on that bumble bee Savage :o |
Title: Re: Good Windshield for Shorter Riders Post by gitarzan on 08/07/04 at 06:19:53 That's why I got them. The glasses over glasses thing, not the bumble bee part. Meantime, while everyone else is trying to make their bikes unique, they all wear the same friggin eyewear. Not me. 8) |
Title: Re: Good Windshield for Shorter Riders Post by Greg_650 on 08/07/04 at 08:15:28 I bet those go well with your sticker covered turtle shell and wanna-be orange and black jacket, too. Just kidding... This must be how you really look http://216.77.188.54/coDataImages/p/Groups/215/215131/folders/156326/1176641Bugteeth.jpg |
Title: Re: Good Windshield for Shorter Riders Post by Susan on 08/07/04 at 10:30:27 In answer to cphillip's question, I am not in sales. ::) So many people have helped me with various projects, I just wanted to share something back. I just has such a hard time figuring out which windshield was right, I thought I might be able to help someone else avoid my dilemma. |

Did you make it home with the windshield intact? :o |
Title: Re: Good Windshield for Shorter Riders Post by sunny on 08/09/04 at 08:48:17 ode to zipties and packing tape (http://gallery.jokeaday.com/gallery/albun15/zip1) i took this pic at home after i jb-welded the break, that is why the packing tape is cut and sticking out on the other side to where the break was... |

I am amazed you made it home with that! Good for you. |
Title: Re: Good Windshield for Shorter Riders Post by sunny on 08/10/04 at 11:53:15 zipties come in different strengths. the ones i used have a tensile strength of 50 pounds. so that together with the packing tape the windsheild didn't move even a little. |
Title: Re: Good Windshield for Shorter Riders Post by Greg_650 on 08/10/04 at 13:58:20 Impressive fix for the windshield. What happened? |
Title: Re: Good Windshield for Shorter Riders Post by sunny on 08/10/04 at 14:08:06 older windsheild + windy day with gusts = one broken plastic bracket, left side. i was originally looking for duct tape in the office but there was not a roll to be found. even among 20+ engineers... i didn't see when it happened, just noticed it at a stoplight in downtown dallas when a bus passed by and it blew that side of the windsheild out a bit. |
Title: Re: Good Windshield for Shorter Riders Post by Diane on 08/31/04 at 06:15:49 Thanks for the info. Bought my Savage in March and have been going nuts over what windshield to buy. I'll give Memphis Shades another look. How hard are windshields to install? Can a reasonably mechanically inclined person do it or should I have it done? |

I think it depends on the windshield. The one I bought (Memphis Slims) was very easy to install and I would think a reasonably mechanically inclined person could do it herself. I did! I'd be happy to help too if needed (online or you could call). I like the fork-mounted windshield better than the handlebar-mounted ones -- it seems more stable because it is mounted in 4 spots instead of 2 but lots of people like the handlebar mount so it may just be a matter of personal preference. There definitely are other windshield options out there. It just depends on what you need/want. Others I know people have put on the bike are slipstreamer, national cycle and the suzuki one. Do pay attention to the height thing. You basically want the top of the windshield to "hit/ line up with" between the tip and middle of your nose. This is the best spot to avoid helmet buffeting and also for you to be able to see over it (important if it rains). Good luck. Let us know if you need any help. |
Title: Re: Good Windshield for Shorter Riders Post by Roadie on 09/03/04 at 01:23:52 Toss in 2 cents... I have the national cycle shield. While it has served me well I can't say I'd buy it again. For one I have the "curved" bars on my bike and the mounts they use aren't exacly the easiest to line up (well I was trying to be perfect!). You CAN tilt it back and forth to preference. My particular shield is light smoke, though it comes in clear. I like the smoke look, but I don't look through the thing. I am a "proportionate" ::) guy and sit taller than the shield. To tell you the truth I haven't ridden "shieldless" yet. I have no clue how much wind is deflected off me or what with or without. (Or even how the bike feels without it.)I've seen plenty of shieldless Savages though. On evening bug runs my friend gets all buggy on his 1200 Bandit (sport bike with a itty bitty shield) and I get like one or two on my helmet. The shield takes a good number of the buggers out. Well, either way I like my shield. But if I had to do it all over again I'd get the fork mounted shield as I think it looks estetically better. - Roadie Lansing MI |
Title: Re: Good Windshield for Shorter Riders Post by suzyssuzi on 09/06/04 at 07:20:03 here in canada we have a company called roadchrome and they have a 14 inch shield that looks like a memphis fat but is very small suits the bike great, am installing now to the bars but will modify to fork mount soon. cost 100.00 canadian (thats like 6.00 american right ) haha |
Title: Re: Good Windshield for Shorter Riders Post by Chench53 on 11/28/04 at 17:39:03 I am just almost 5'0" tall. Another option is what I recently put on my bike. The Memphis Shades "Shooter" windshield. It's just less than 1" shorter than the Suzuki windshield and I find it's perfect for me. I got it from Dennis Kirk, and was satisfied with price and shipping and all. It is handlebar mounted, and was fairly easy to put on, although I did need a second pair of hands to do it. Gerry |
Title: Re: Good Windshield for Shorter Riders Post by Susan on 11/29/04 at 05:44:20 Gerry - I'd love to see a pic of the "shooter" on your bike! It'd be even better if you were in the pic too! :) |
Title: Re: Good Windshield for Shorter Riders Post by Chench53 on 12/01/04 at 04:54:20 OK, I will have to find a picture of it, and me too. :) I know I have them somewhere. I took pictures as I was putting it on, now just to find the disk with the pics..... ::) Gerry |
