Title: More cubes
Post by klx650sm2002 on 09/28/04 at 04:36:14

Has anyone fitted a bigger piston or know where to get one.
Thanks in advance

In 4 1/2 years, I haven't heard of anyone installing an overbore kit in the Savage.  I know they exist, but no one has mentioned it.

A kawasaki Nomad piston is a 2mm oversize for the KLX, both J.E.Pistons and Wiseco do a 3mm oversize for SR/XT 500's.

I haven't done an overbore since my dirt bike days  ;)

Looked but didn't find a big bore kit.

Has anybody any knowledge about squish clearances.
Thanks again.

The DR600S piston might work on the Savage, I think it's 95.5 so 96 would be possible, need to check gudgeon pin diam.

Post by Greg_650 on 09/30/04 at 02:39:07

The DR600 has a bigger bore and a shorter stroke than the Savage.

Post by klx650sm2002 on 09/30/04 at 02:53:02

What bore is the DR600, would it be suitable as a big bore for the Savage.

How about more compression instead of cubes?  I'm sure taking the 8.5 (2005) to around 10 would give more boost and still use pump gas.

Title: Re: More cubes
Post by Greg_650 on 10/29/04 at 04:41:18

More compression would be good...either from a bigger piston or from smaller combustion area (same difference).

How do we do it?

Post by PRH111 on 10/29/04 at 23:40:47

Send a piston to Wiseco and ask for them to either check their stock or make a one off piston that is oversize.

Probably be around $100 for a forged piston capable of withstanding 100hp.  You can also have them create it such that the compression ratio is increased with the same valve clearance.

You can also have forged rods custom made as well from Pauter...but I don't think any of us will need that unless someone is planning on hooking up a turbo/NO2/supercharger.

(There are other companies that will do the same but Wiseco and Pauter are the two I have had limited dealings with).

Someone just posted on Bert's site that they put in a oversized piston.  See http://www.heise-workstations.de/ls650/Fragen/messages/38791.html

Stated it could be found on bikebandit.com

I am impressed.  Not only the piston, but also the exhaust port grinding.  Did a thorough job.

My basement is sure to be covered in parts this winter now.

That is actually an aftermarket piston for a GSX 1100, but the valve clearance was what I was looking at...

Here is the link to "More Cubes"  8)

Build  a LS695 (http://www.bikebandit.com/PartsBandit/product~pf_id~2788749~dept_id~943503.asp)....97 mm piston complete with valve clearance.

I'm sorry but that looks like a piston for a two valve engine not a four valver.

darn, you're right.  I might as well delete that picture unless Wiseco also has an optional 2 valve head to go with it :o

I hate generic photos.  Darn it, darn it, darn it....say bye, bye to photo...

Now who is going to post the before and after dyno sheets for removing the exhaust port restriction and then again for putting in the 97mm piston.

Is that a necessary requirement?  However, if I do this work, I'm sure to give my before and after opinions of the effect of such work.

There are other reasons that some people do this kind of work and the biggest one is "Because I can"  ::)

Not a requirement but it definitely is nice to have.  Any good dyno will also have an exhaust gas analyzer to let you know exactly what you need to do for tuning as well (to get the most out of your engine).

Hello All,
Resident newbie here trying to get some info....
I read all the posts in this thread and checked out the bikebandit site. So am I correct in assuming all 86-95 savages are 2 valvers? I'm wondering because on Ebay I seen a 99 savage that the owner claimed had a big bore kit. but she(hubby is a mechanic) said it was close to 750. is this possible? they said the bike dealer did the machine work and hubby put it back together.
the reason I'm doing all this research is I'm in the market for a used savage  that I can hot rod. bigger piston, more compression, bigger carb, meg exhaust. if anybody can give me some tips I'm all ears..thanks, lefty

Title: Re: More cubes
Post by PRH111 on 11/03/04 at 22:44:34

4 valves.

750cc would require a 100.8mm piston...I don't see that as an easy task to accomplish.

Can you give the Ebay link for this bike?

KLX has a 100mm piston,and DR750/800 has 105mm.

The DR 750/800 were never available in the US.  Nice looking bikes though.

DR 750/800 bore/stroke
750=105/84
800=105/90
Real big singles!!!

Yet those bikes were not designed with an initial bore of 94mm punched out to 100mm right?

I thought the Savage has always been 4 valve?

Yes the Savage has allways been 4-valve.

OK, I was a little worried -- thought you guys were saying the overbore pistons could only be used with older Savages.
