Title: What's Your Winter Savage Project List?
Post by Susan on 10/09/04 at 14:33:46

Sooo...what's your winter Savage project list?

I am still making my list but as a start I am:
  • painting my helmet
  • fixing a small dent in my tank
  • finishing/painting a fiberglass piece that will replace the pillion seat
  • figuring out what to do about my custom pillion handle (my local guy fell through and the piece has too many curves to it for me to use that online machine shop) -- am thinking I may buy the S40 fender rails but I haven't priced them out yet

Projects hoped to complete this winter are, floorboards, old sprung style solo seat, some deflectors on the bottom the fairing, brighter lights in the fairing.

Either make a smaller handle to replace the sissybar or remove the thingamajigs along the side with the sissybar.

That's about it.  I might pull the carb and work on it a little.

I don't have a garage, so I'm kind of limited, project-wise.

I don't know yet...

Solo seat and rear fender mod....

FCR41 carburator....

Open exhaust port....

One of my rear turn signals / running lights went out yesterday...gotta fix that soon  :o

Two things, both performance related.
The silencer exit has a slight bellmouth, more of the same there, thats the easy one.
Shock top mount as it is fighting for space with the air filter, thats the hard one.
Oh three things, a smaller diameter front brake master cylinder for better brakes.

My spare bedroom is already full of computers, guitars, amps, pedals, cameras, books and a rocking chair.  Not much room for anything else.

My winter project is to ride the little baby as often as I can as weather permits. After all, isn't that what a motorbike is for? 8)

One I forgot I'm going to treat KLX to a manual cam chain tensioner as the auto one is a bit dodgy.

I'm not sure how much I'm going to be able to get done (I'm hoping everything)

  • Paint everything!  Frame, fenders, side panels, and tank (I had mentioned earlier that I was going to attempt to use an old Virago tank but I have not been able to find a gas cap for it so I've invested in a Maurader tank.
  • Stand offs for saddle bags
  • Iron cross tail light
  • Side mount license plate bracket
  • Straight pipe
  • Fix oil seepage from engine
  • New air horn
  • Fork seals
  • .....? not sure what else yet but I'm sure I'll think of something

Title: Re: What's Your Winter Savage Project List?
Post by sunny on 10/11/04 at 12:07:20

my projects are:

1. new rear fender and rear lighting kit to make it easy to turn mine into a solo seat...

2. head gasket replacement.

3. and since the engine will be out anyway, might as well paint it black...

4. saddlebags

those are in the definite category. these are in case i get a christmas bonus:

5. new windshield

6. fabricate a new pillion seat that is completely and easily removed when not being used.

by the way, i won't be doing any of this stuff till february... the weather's still nice here till then.

Unless this winter is a lot harsher than the past several in Dallas, I plan to do a lot of riding.  That said, I only plan to do normal maintenance... tightening, oil/filter, adjust valves, clean/adjust/replace spark plug, lube cables, etc.  Otherwise, about the only thing currently on my agenda will be to replace the stock muffler with a Jardine and rejet the carb.  If I'm lucky, and winter allows enough riding, I'll need new rubber by next summer.

Title: Re: What's Your Winter Savage Project List?
Post by sunny on 10/12/04 at 07:55:22

new rubber? how often do you change tires? i just turned over 6000 miles yesterday.

Title: Re: What's Your Winter Savage Project List?
Post by Savage_Rob on 10/12/04 at 10:00:24

In this case, it's not as much a question of mileage as it is age.  The bike has less than 3000 miles on it but is a '98 and I think the rubber is original.  I just keep inspecting for signs of cracking, etc. and expect to see them sometime in the next 6-12 months.  Even if I don't, older rubber seems to wear away faster than new rubber.  I assume it's due to drying and the reduction of elasticity.  My mantra for bikes has always been one of timely oil changes and good rubber.

Title: Re: What's Your Winter Savage Project List?
Post by sunny on 10/12/04 at 11:34:06

my bike is a 97 and i have no clue how old the tires are. no cracks at all yet so i am hoping they are newer than the bike is...

I know that several manufacturers have age recomendations on Tires. And I believe they are wise to do this. They normaly are five years when they recommend changing them requardless of tread. I also note that most of us RVer's change our trailer tires every five years as well. Or there- a - bouts..... Since we rarely wear them out at that point tread wise. We change for sidewall flex issues and general rubber degradation.

I have seen tube type tires go longer with new tubes put into them. But our tires are more subject to catastrophic inner tube failure because they do have tubes as the only thing holding air in them. I should think it wise to replace at least tubes every five years. And while your at it I would very seriously think about the tires then too. They sort of work together in this case.

Also I normaly look to get 10K off a set of Motorcycle tires. If I get more than that I get worried about the "stickyness" of the compounds that were in them. And at my rate I normaly don't go five years with a set thats for certain.

#5 advance ignition timing as much as possible let's look again.

Silencer exit
shock top mount
smaller master cylinder
manual cam chain tensioner
ignition advance

that's all folks.

This Winter I'm making room in my garage so I can get a playmate for my Savage. I'm looking at a used Volusia to buy next Spring. I won't ever get rid of my Savage, I like it to much, but a little more room and weight on a bike will be nice for the longer trips I'm planning. With having a Volusia as a work horse I can chop my Savage even more since I won't have to worry about carrying anything on it. I can customize it all I want! ;D

i've thought long and hard on this subject, and here's my list

1. fix baseball sized dent in tank do to a "high ho silver away" incident.

2. use my snowmobile suit to ride whenever there is no frost on the roadway..    8)

3. do all the things my better half wanted me to do all summer because i blew them off putting 4000 miles on my thumper between mid july and now.

My tires need serious changing.  I have roughly 10,000 miles on the original tires.  This is really pushing it.  Sunny, your tires looked great.  That's why I made the comment that "I wish I had your tires".  They looked too new to be original.  I know your not too familiar with the history of your bike but maybe the original owner was hard on the bikes tires (taking off hard, cornering hard, etc...)  That's why you have a new set with only 6000 miles.  Better them buying new tires, than you.  I've been pricing and they want a fortune for the tire and the labor.

Changing them yourself isn't that hard.  Tire tools are cheaper than shop labor, and you'll have a whole winter to practice NOT pinching the tube

Winterproject:
1) replace the complete engine for one that has only       13k KM (mine has 34K Km)
2) Clearcote the previous owner paintjob.
3) Install Seeger forward controls
4) Replace the forkoil
5) Install anti-clack unit ( only for pre 1996 engines)
6) Install HD butterfly handlebar
7) Maybe install a S40 gel-seat if i can get one.
8) Replace the exhaus with a better looking one.
Bits and pieces that need cleaning up.

That's all for now folks

The perforated tube (absorption type baffle) is about 8-9mm bigger than the exit tube, this presents a sharp edge to gas trying to get out so I made this sharp edge into a bellmouth shape using a hammer.

We have the same problem, only it's me that's doing the putting off...the other day, my hubby was running through the list of home projects we'd planned for the summer and we'd done almost none of them.  He blamed it on me and my need to ride ALL THE TIME.   8)

It was kinda true, funny and cool, all at the same time.  Fortunately he likes to ride too so all is good.  Except the barn that didn't get tuckpointed this summer etc...

Title: Re: What's Your Winter Savage Project List?

I didn't know that barns wanted to be or even needed to be tuckpointed  ???

We have an old stone farmhouse with an old stone barn...thus the tuckpointing.

Tuckpointing means re-doing the stuff (mortar) that goes in between the stones to hold them together.  Over time it deteriorates and you just have stones sitting on top of each other with no "glue" between them.  Tuckpointing has to be done to brick buildings too.

So you tuck stuff between the points.  Makes sense to me.  So I guess that when sealing the headcover with silicone rubber, I'll just say that I "tuckpointed the headcover."  Then everyone will understand  ::)

BTW - as far as this topic is concerned, you won't have time for a winter project.  You'll be too busy moderating all of us  ;D

That bike looks pretty darn familiar for some reason....maybe I've just seen too many.  Looks good though.

Why is the brake pad red in the last photo?

I like the rear fender job.  Does the license plate move too much for the cops to read it?

Where is the regulator?  In the airbox?

What kind of rear shocks are those?

Need another project idea for this winter?  Just an idea, but to put a finishing touch on the solo look, pull the swing arm and weld the holes for the passenger pegs

Title: Re: What's Your Winter Savage Project List?
Post by suzyssuzi on 10/31/04 at 07:12:31

the bike should not be familiar we live on vancouver island and just finished building, maybe put on 700 miles , started with a stock 86 red savage, the pads are red becuase i replaced them and did not paint knowing they would come off in winter to do fork seals will paint then, regulator is in air box,yes we will weld pass peg mount holes, and the rear shocks are standard but with chrome exhaust tips sliped over and set screwed into place.

Not on My list but I've had one made anyway, stainless steel braided rear brake hose.

To go with the stainless hose and banjos I have now got two stainless banjo bolts, one plain and one with a bleed nipple to go on top of the master cylinder (highest point) to help get all the air out.
The other thing I got for KLX is a manual low speed fuel so instead of turning the carb on it's side and poking a screwdriver down a hole to get at the screw now I can just turn it by hand with the carb in position.Of course you LS guys don't have that problem.

Well, maybe it will be more familiar in the future  ;D

My NEW "Winter Savage Project List" is both short and long....load 2 Savages in back of Ram pickup truck, remove windshields, install bike covers and tarp, and drive west 2700 miles to Portland, OR.

It could be that we'll meet on the Left Coast one of these days  8)

On this tire note, my front tire has large cracks.  I found a place with a good deal for tires plus mounting and balancing.

I can change my own tire on a car.  Tell me is it the same with a motorcycle?  Pretty straight forward?  It doesn't look that way.

Do you think my (son) auto mechanic can put the tire on the bike?  Or is it more complicated?

Also any how to links would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Update on my winter project:

I've got the entire bike torn down to the frame, swing arm, and engine.
I've decided instead of using the old Virago tank that I have I'm going to use the tank off of a 1997 Suzuki Marauder.

What has to be modified on the Marauder tank to fit the Savage?

I don't have any pics with the tank on yet since I haven't started working on mounting the tank yet.

But so far what I can see that is going to need to be done is mostly mods to the frame:

-- Weld a plate at the base of the back bone to move the mounting bolts since the tank is longer.

-- Replace the bars in the front where the tank mounts at the top with longer ones, and find larger dampaning rubbers.

-- The last thing, and the one I think is going to be the hardest part is making up 2 pcs to go between the neck and the tank in the front to fill in the empty space.

If anyone has any pointers or ideas I'd love to hear them.
