Post by sunny on 10/15/04 at 08:07:39

Wind Chill  on a Bike (http://motorcyclecity.com/chill.htm)

this was posted on a local group so i thought i'd share.
and actually i am going to type up a chart and place it next to my front door with an outdoor thermometer in view.
i was chilly monday from under dressing, and i had to turn back this morning from under dressing...

UGH! scratch that link. the math CANNOT be right if it indicates that the slower you go the colder it gets...

i'll go look for something else...

noaa wind chill chart (http://www.nws.noaa.gov/om/windchill/index.shtml)

would this apply to us as riders if we exchange the wind speed for our speed?

Not sure but the rule of thumb I've heard is that it will feel about 20 degrees colder than it actually is when you are riding a motorcycle.

on the noaa chart it shows how long it takes to get frostbite at the different temp/windspeeds...

that could come in handy.

Sunny the first link you posted seems to work fine.  Example

Going 30 mph  Temp 50 degrees  Wind Chill  28.4 degrees
Going 50 mph  Temp 50 degrees  Wind Chill  25.3 degrees

i started to make a chart and it was a few tenths of a degree warmer at 70 miles per hour and 40 degrees than it was doing 65 mph and 40 degrees.

70 mph and 40 = 10.1
65 mph and 40 = 9.6

that can't be right.

Another thing not added into the computation is time of day.

50 with the sun out = Not too bad
50 and dark at night = Much colder

I read somewhere, that after a certain temperature, the windchill factor stays the same.  I assume that temperature would be much too cold to ride anyway.

I live in New Brunswick Canada, and am still riding my savage to work most mornings. If it is below 4 degrees I don't ride, due to slippery road conditions (frost)...I hope to get a few more weeks this fall, but doubt I will. They are already getting snow out west.

As kids we rode our motorcycles untill the snow came, and sometimes after. Now I am older , with thinner blood, and a higher fear of crashing....lol

I wear a full face helmet, and lined nylon/flannel pants and jacket, and foam lined gloves  I really don't feel the cold.  I guess I am climatized to it.

I do find this topic most interesting, and will be following the results......cheers..............Michael

What would be the difference in 0 wind speed at 50 mph and a 50 mph wind while standing still?  Just the motorcycle, I believe.

Isn't that just a matter of perception?  50 is 50.  How can a bright 50 be warmer than a dark 50?

Maybe it is a matter of humidity... ???

It's actually that all my riding gear is
BLACK
The sun is my heater.

That doesn't change the wind chill, it just means that you don't absord the sun light and retain the HEAT

Yes, I agree, the wind speed, plus your riding speed is what I'd say is total wind speed.

In the cold, then I think you only freeze your butt off. ;D
