Why not have guidelines:

only three types of posts allowed:

FS/FT:  *item description*  [for sale/for trade]
WTB:  *item description*  [want to buy]
INFO:  *item description*  [information regarding sales deals, group buys, or hot items on ebay etc]

Just a suggestion.

What do you suggest for replies and inquiries from others?  Instant messages, only?

I would suggest any REPLY that includes offers with a dollar amount should only be done via PMs (instant messaging) to prevent it from becoming an auction house with people coming in later to outbid the first interested party.

Questions about the item and remarks of interest seem like an appropriate reply without requiring an instant message.

i've always posted price.  first come  first served. that's the way it's been on forums. remember we are a community of brothers and sisters. we offer our parts to who needs them on the forum.  then we go try to sell on e-bay.  it's not about making a profit from our community members. well not in my mind at least.

need to make a big profit on something take it straight to ebay

Thanks for the thoughts on guidelines. I think I will just let the section develop naturally. The whole point of having a Marketplace section is to allow people to meet and do business. If it becomes unwieldy or too commercial we can adjust. It is easy enough for me to move topics if one ends up in the wrong place.

That is another thing to be wary of...businesses looking for a free advertising spot for their wares.
