Physics.

Traction is a function of tire contact size.  A smaller tire has a smaller radius and a smaller contact patch.  The super wide tire will give greater traction for faster cornering.

Which, of course, again brings up "Why?"

On the converse, a wider tire has fewer pounds per square inch.  That means less traction in adverse conditions.  What does that mean? It means don't ride that sucker in the rain, mud, gravel, snow, anything thing other than a flat dry surface.

Why?

  • Same reason some people put spoilers on cars that never go faster than 85MPH. (Or fake air scoops)

  • Same reason people living in $80K houses drive Escalades.

  • Same reason people who never leave the road in a state where it the snow gets deeper than 6" only every twenty years drive Hummers.

  • Same reason every little turkey in town is wearing West Coast Chopper shirts, even though the closest the've ever been to a chopper is watching a TV show.

Why?

Because they are impressing themselves, and think that other people are impressed as well.

lol.

and about the shirts. it does NOT help that both orange county choppers and west coast choppers have labelled stuff for sale at walmart...
grr.

>:( Hey that hurts!!!!  LOL.  I really enjoy the American Choppers show, and I have an OCC sticker on my 4Runner.  And I didn't get it at WalMart, I got it at O'Reilly's.  I don't really care for West Coast Chopper's stuff, OCC seems more original.  Gotta go, my XBOX and Halo 2 are calling me.

OCC seems more original? Wow! that is the first time I have heard that. I live about 20 miles from their factory, and about 30 miles from their retail store. If you actually look at all their theme bikes lined up, which for the most part is easy as they have not sold them. They are in a lineup at their retail store for viewing. They all seem to have the exact same controls, lighting, frames, fenders, motors, stands, etc. So they change some tanks and some bars and yell a lot on the show. Their retail store ONLY sells promo stuff. There is not a single bike part or accessory in the store. You can buy shirts, jackets, and even underware (what better place to put an OCC logo).

BTW: I also watch the show.  ;)

i was over the motorcycle "fad" in my life (or at least i thought i was) until my son started watching american chopper. a few months later i owned a 2001 savage.
can't say i like the type of bikes they put- out, but i do appreciate their craftsmanship.

 God bless...
