I've seen a few guys who have made their own pegs by running a bar across the front of the frame and clamping it with U bolts.  Functional if not attractive.  Might look OK if painted to match.

If you attach to the frame, you will need extensions or the pegs will be so close to the frame, they won't really provide much comfort.  Also, you will need something to kick them away from the exhaust a bit.  In my opinion, I'd nut it up and get the engine guard.

I found some metal tubing at work that was about an inch in diameter, and some rubber grips for each side.  I really thought I had this figured out, till I put it on the bike.  I mounted it across the frame with a fancy clamp used for electrical stuff.  The only problem was whenever I put my feet on it, my knees were nearly in my chest.  They needed to be so far out that it would interfere with the front wheel steering.  So needless to say, they came off.

I tried clamp-on pegs on my engine guard, but I felt that my knees were too high also.  Felt awkward, so off they came.

I intend to build these http://www.jonline.org/savage/Tips___How-to_s/HiWay_Pegs/hiway_pegs.html

or buy the Rivco pegs (Rivco HD002) from http://www.cruisercustomizing.com/

hope this helps.
