Title: Price for 2005 S40 Post by davea on 11/14/04 at 16:56:23 I have been to two dealers and get "out the door"quotes ranging from $4599 to $4899. No extras just a stock S40 in black. Can anyone give me some info on what they paid or at least some negotiation techniques? This is my first bike purchase. |
Title: Re: Price for 2005 S40 Post by Susan on 11/14/04 at 17:50:09 One thing I did that helped me get the best price, was I got a list of local dealers off the Suzuki website and just started calling them. I told them I would be buying an '04 Savage in the next 30 days and that I was looking for their best "out-the-door" price (total cost including tax). Some weren't willing to give it to me over the phone but many did. Most who gave it to me were also willing to break it down into its components. This let me get a feel for who would deal and who wouldn't. As you know, "out-the-door" is important because it is the final price you have to pay. If you can't get a dealer to negotiate on price, sometimes you can them to throw other things in for free such as accessories or see if you can get the first service (600 miles or 2 mths) thrown in for free. It is actually an involved service requiring almost 4 hours of labor if done right, which means it is not cheap. Most people get it done by a dealer even if they normally do their own work in order to protect the warranty. Someone on a general Suzuki forum mentioned that they were able to do this which I thought was a brilliant idea. Unfortunately I read about it after I had bought my bike. I think one guy was able to get it for free and someone else said he was able to get it for $50. Just food for thought. Good luck shopping! :D :D |
Title: Re: Price for 2005 S40 Post by Max_Morley on 11/14/04 at 17:51:52 Seems high to me, I thought I read in one of the cycle mags that the price went up $100 this year. Seems that should make it $4399 list. Maybe the new boulevard designation is making them more desirable and the price is less able to be discussed. Other years Suzuki has thrown in $400 in free factory accessories. It did buy gel seats, bags and brackets for many. I think the gel seat is stock now. Usually the prices drop as the cold weather comes on and the holiday season progresses. Hang in there for a decent price. You can go to the Suzuki webs site to chck the suggested list price. Max |

He is talking about "out the door" prices and not just list price. Here in Washington out the door with a list price of $4399 would be roughly $4890 (8.8 % sales tax). This is considering worst case where you get no discounts. |
Title: Re: Price for 2005 S40 Post by Old Geezer on 11/15/04 at 07:15:13 Not sure where you are located, but if you live near West Texas, I have a black 2003 Savage for sale. We purchased it new in July. It has 2000 miles and we've added an engine guard, windshield, luggage rack and it is in perfect condition. Priced at $3,495. |
Title: Re: Price for 2005 S40 Post by Max_Morley on 11/15/04 at 10:06:27 Forget the tax and I now live in WA. When I bought mine and SIL bought hers we were in Anchorage and they have an aversion to taxes there. Owned it long enough when we moved here they didn't make a deal of it. Should have remembered the taxes as we bought a new Colorado PU in July and the promotional discount paid the sales tax. Still think most dealers will be discounting them as cold weather and flooring fees start adding up. Also if there is a National Cycle show in your area they sometimes have show special pricing to help the dealers move iron after the show. Max |
Title: Re: Price for 2005 S40 Post by cphilip on 11/15/04 at 10:37:17 I had listed one I found in Athens Georgia site that was a 2004 with 65 miles on it. Was listing for $3700.... not out the door but... Now it does not show up there so I assume it sold. It was Silver. So you might find a 2004 hold over somewhere for like $4000 out the door. If its out of state you would not pay Sales taxes in that state. You would be subject to them in the state you register it in. And yea... the new MSRP is $4399... and contrary to popular belief they do not have a lot of profit room like in Automobiles and do have to have them shipped in on top of that. They rarely going to move very much on one. I would say you would be doing good to get out the door at $4600 - $4700.... Can't help you much on new. I bought used. A 2002 with 6,500 miles on it and added Saddle bags, bag brackets and windshield and out the door at $3300... |
Title: Re: Price for 2005 S40 Post by PRH111 on 11/15/04 at 13:21:59 I bought a 2003 with 1500 miles (which they showed maintenance records for the 600 mile maintenance done at their shop) with full face helmet, motorcycle cover, clymer manual, windshield, and an engine guard + Jardine exhaust from the previous owner for $4700 out the door with all taxes, registration and fees. That was in April when everyone is of course going to be looking for a bike. The salesman did take the price down $100 off what was posted on the bike after I told him I'd need to buy all the accessories (listed above) at the same time. |
Title: Re: Price for 2005 S40 Post by Mr 650 on 11/15/04 at 15:31:44 I was in Bellvue Suzy last month and they had a new white Blvd 40 tagged -$3999. |
Title: Re: Price for 2005 S40 Post by DAS100 on 11/15/04 at 18:46:52 I hope to be purchasing a new S40 this comming weekend here in Phoenix, AZ. The out the door price mentioned in the past posts don't help alot; as out the door probably includes taxes, registration, title and document fees. Which of course varies from state to state. It would be alot more helpful to have just the purchase price of the bike. Suziki has 9.9% financing, which may be attractive for some people. I'm still a little bit bummed that you can't test ride a bike at the dealership. I'm not much of a fan of Harleys, but the Harley dealers have an arrangement where you can ride a similar bike to the one you are thinking of buying. I may very well hold off on purchasing the bike, until I've test ridden a S40 or LS650. |
Title: Re: Price for 2005 S40 Post by DAS100 on 11/20/04 at 15:21:13 Wow, what a shocker. Went in to purchase my S40 and been told that in addition to registration and title and taxes there is also another $650 setup and destination fee. We are talking about $5800 (including 8% sales tax) out the door. This includes the bike ($4400), setup and destination fees ($650), registration and title ($350) and taxes ($350). I know there's some wiggle room in here. Any response would be appreciated. |
Title: Re: Price for 2005 S40 Post by Max_Morley on 11/20/04 at 18:17:19 I'd wait until a better deal came along. Setup and destination is just a way for the dealer (stealer) to pack the price. Unless things have changed, there is an allowance for setting up the bke from the manufacturer/distributor (as a dealer tech, I used to get 1.5 hrs to set up new Chev PU's in the mid 70's) and how can they sell something if they don't get it to the floor for someone to see and buy it. Can you see your local grocery store adding a % to your grocery bill for transportation. It is a cost of doing business and needs to be in the difference between list or selling price and what the dealer pays for it. |
Title: Re: Price for 2005 S40 Post by Roadie on 11/21/04 at 09:30:54 Hello, Well I'll throw in the Roadie's two bits in. Have you ever looked around for used? There's a deal out there to be had if you look for it. The only reason I would be a new bike first bike is for the warranty. That's about it. Otherwise you're paying alot for something brand new. The other advantage of rolling off new is you know how the bike was broken in. Ok so that's my argument for buying new.. BUT used is better here's my thinking why: 1. Cost: People know the stealership isn't going to give them anything for the bike. So local market conditions rule on it. It's an in-between bike meaning people starting out will think it's too big for them. And more experience riders think it's too small. So THAT's a buying advantage, the marketable population is reduced. 2. It's a cruiser, cruisers are bought by how should I say it? (No offense to the forum members).. Older folks. I.E. Someone like me (I'm under 30) wouldn't necessarily buy that bike. They are into the sport bikes that they beat up and sell off later for whatever they get out of them. Most people who buy the Savage take care of it, have ridden before, and will generally ridden "normally". I got my Savage before the weather broke this year. It was a good time to do it and I did all I could to find the best price and bike condition. Here's my "used" bike stats: 2002 LS550 1496 Miles Stock set-up Saddle bags Saddle bag brackets $2550.00 The bike was "just broken in" in my opinion. The man I bought it from started up cycling again after a 20 year hiatis and took care of the bike. He had three others in the garage as he stepped up to larger bikes. He was over 40 and his wife told him to get rid of a bike as he was the only rider for the three bikes. Heck the bike's tires still "had" the nubs on them. (Ahem.. That was soon fixed on the twisties.) If your afraid of buying used, bring an experienced biker friend that can help you see things tell tale of wrecks ect. 3. Besides if you are new to riding, you're statiscally at a higher risk of dumping the bike. So why shell out that kind of money when you know down the road the investment will have less risk involved. Something to think about. - Roadie ::) |
Title: Re: Price for 2005 S40 Post by DAS100 on 11/21/04 at 13:04:56 Davea, What did the out the door price include besides the bike: Setup and Destination Charges ? Taxes ? Title and Registration ? Thanks |
Title: Re: Price for 2005 S40 Post by rkutzner on 11/22/04 at 16:48:25 My price last month for my white S40: Bike: $3995 Freight: ~$200 Tax/Title/Registration: ~$350 Total: ~$4550 And then I got my $900 rebate from my Drivers Edge Mastercard, I never carry a balance so that is tax free money !!! |
Title: Re: Price for 2005 S40 Post by DAS100 on 11/22/04 at 20:50:59 Thanks Davea. That's a great price. I don't think I'll be able to get the price you did. Looking around $5,000 out the door including registration, title and tax. A California dealer is willing to sell a new S40 for $4399 out the door, minuse the sales tax, title and registration which I would do in Arizona. Tax is 8%. but the state charges only $77.00 for title and registration. I don't know how the dealers can justify the $350 fee that they charge. Maybe I'm missing something. If I get the bike in California there will also be an additional smog test fee of about $29 when I register it here. Still hoping to buy the bike here in Phoenix. How do you like your bike. What are the best features. What are the worst? Did you do your own 600 mile service? Talked to a Suzuki Service rep and he told me that basically just do needed adjustments, lube various parts of the bike, and change the oil. No valve adjustments (which surprised me) They charge $120 plus parts. |
Title: Re: Price for 2005 S40 Post by MK on 11/23/04 at 15:02:23 Ok, I'm in Northern VA - just outside of DC. In September I bought 2 2005 S40's - one white and one black. I paid $4597.54 for each and that was the "real out the door price". I didn't care what they called purchase price, taxes, set up fee, tags, admin fee or anything else - I made them give me the price for me to ride it "paid for" and "road ready" out the door. I also put it on my Discover Card and just paid it off the next month - so I floated $9000 for about 30 days plus get a "CashBack" bonus on the charge. On top of that I got 10% on accessories and for attending a "new rider seminar" (and having just bought 2 bikes) we got a booklet with discount coupons. We'll get 200% tuition reimbursement each for the MSF course we'll take (again for me) in the Spring, a free road hazard/tire & Battery warranty, plus just saved 15% on labor for our first 600 mile service (about $35 each). There are a few other coupons we'll also be able to take advantage of. |
Title: Re: Price for 2005 S40 Post by davea on 11/23/04 at 15:21:32 this has all been very helpful. to be honest i am still confused over whether or not to drop the little bit extra on a 883 sportster or a new savage for what i think i can get for 4600 out the door in nj. |
Title: Re: Price for 2005 S40 Post by Old Geezer on 11/24/04 at 07:00:08 You might be able to get a pre-2004 Sportster for quite a bit less than they have traditionally sold for. In 2004, they rubber mounted the engines on the Sportsters and those are far more in demand than previous year models. If you do go the Sporty route and you are less than 5'10" or so, consider gettting a lowering kit on it. The seat height is several inches higher than the Savage. |
Title: Re: Price for 2005 S40 Post by Birdmove on 11/24/04 at 23:00:51 I live in Washington State and have been comparing deals on mostly dual sport bikes (Suzuki DR650, DRZ400S, Honda XR650L, Kawasaki KLR650), so I've learned a few things about dealers. First, remember, this is the off season-you should be able to get the best deal now, and later on in the winter. You must compare as many dealers as there are in your area, or as far as you would consider driving. So far, I have found two dealers that do not charge freight and setup fees, at least during the off season. These fees can vary wildly. As an example-one dealer in my area-RMC- I was told they charg $574.00 in freight and setup on a KLR650.I found another dealer, Lake City Honda/Kawasaki, that will sell me one for $100.00 off MSRP (manufacturers suggested retail price-i.e. "list") with zero freight and setup fees. That dealer will save me $574.00 over RMCs price. Thats big bucks there friends. Paulsons Suzuki in Olympia sells all motorcycles with no freight and setup fees in the off season only. That policy would save me about $340.00 over another dealer that does charge those fees. The other thing is, they are ready to come out with the 2005 models, so you should be able to save a bit more on a leftover 2004 or older. Some dealers may have new, leftovers from several years ago.I remember a dealer that had a new Suzuki Bandit 600, the older style, for a really good price as it was 3-4 years old sitting on his showroom floor. ;D Good luck, Jon Neet |
Title: Re: Price for 2005 S40 Post by davea on 11/29/04 at 19:11:50 I have to admit this is one of the best message boards out there for a new motorcyclist. I have decided to go for the S40 and will wait for a real cold day in January to begin my negotiations. Thanks for all the candor and help from everybody. Lets keep this thread going. Dave |
Title: Re: Price for 2005 S40 Post by savagegirlbiker on 12/03/04 at 13:40:07 Yes - I agree with Dave - a very nice message board for new Savage owners and/or bikers. I was in a different group . . . and dropped out after only a week. So . . . I do really appreciate all the suggestions, etc. from everyone on the message board. Tons of really good info for us newbies. Kim |
