Title: ENGINE SQUEELS Post by marty62253 on 11/17/04 at 11:06:11 I BOUGHT A 2 YEAR OLD SAVAGE & I'M TRYING TO GET ALL THE BUGS OUT. THE ENGINE SQUEELS OR HOWLS AT HIGHER RPM'S - THIS IS DEFINITELY NOT THE BELT - THAT SQUEEK IS ALSO PRESENT.(AND ADDRESSED SEPARATELY) IT SEEMS TO BE ENGINE SPEED SPECIFIC, BUT NOT ASSOCIATED WITH RAPID THROTTLE INPUT - WITHOUT A TACH I CANNOT SAY AT WHAT RPM IT STARTS, BUT I CAN SAY - PUT IT IN FIRST GEAR & GO...WHEN ENGINE SOUNDS TO BEE SOMEHERE IN THE MIDDLE OF IDLE & WHERE IT IS BEGGING TO UPSHIFT IT STARTS TO SQUEEL OR HOWL - IT DOES NOT GO AWAY UNTIL ENGINE SPEED IS REDUCED. IT IS LESS NOTICABLE IN EACH OF THE FOLLLOWING GEARS - BUT THEN, I WEAR A SHORT HELMET & WIND CANCELS MOST NOISE INPUT. WHAT SHOULD I CHECK TO IDENTIFY THE SOURCE? - OR BETTER - IS THERE A KNOWN TENDANCY FOR THIS?? |

Title: Re: ENGINE SQUEELS Post by gitarzan on 11/18/04 at 20:22:00 Check the front gear wheel, under the aluminum cover. Mine was just touching the cover and after about 1/2 hours riding, it would squeal or gnash. I filed off a little from the cover where it was touching and viola! one less squeak, rattle, pop or squeal from my Savage. |

If you had to file clearance for the cover then something happened to the stock bubber bushings and spacers for the pulley cover mounting bolts. Those 3 bolts (2 of 3 anyway) have different length spacers and it is real easy to switch them around (since they tend to just fall off) when the cover is reinstalled. I did that by accident with my spouse's pulley cover once. |
Title: Re: ENGINE SQUEELS Post by Honda_fan on 11/20/04 at 13:29:04 Put your hand on the speedo and see if it goes away. Sounds more like the speedo than the engine if it happens while moving. If it squeals while stopped and reving the engine than probably engine based. |

I guess we can blame that on the previous owner... ;D |
Title: Re: ENGINE SQUEELS Post by marty62253 on 11/29/04 at 14:13:39 Well I'll be.......a rattling speedo can sound like a squealing pig....yup---that's exactly what I have. Now, Who can tell me how to get rid of that awfull noise?? Marty |
Title: Re: ENGINE SQUEELS Post by Honda_fan on 11/29/04 at 18:48:32 My quick fix is a shot of silicon around the speedo and on the springs and posts. More permanent is a little blue RTV on the springs. I know other have found and used other solutions. Just be careful tightening the nuts on the spring posts. DAMHIK |

Yep, silicon on the springs AND be careful not to over tighten the nuts....much easier than the process of removing the tank though ::) |

Title: Re: ENGINE SQUEELS Post by marty62253 on 11/30/04 at 08:46:12 O.K. - I'LL TRY THAT....WHAT NUTS AM I TRYING NOT TO OVERTIGHTEN??? |

If you pull the tank to get at the speedo you will see it is mounted on posts that have springs under a washer & nut. These are the nuts I am refering to. The plastic is pretty weak to the twisting motion of the nut on the post. I recommend using blue thread locker so you only have to run them down and gently bottom them. I wasn't paying attention and the post twisted off. |

Title: Re: ENGINE SQUEELS Post by marty62253 on 12/06/04 at 06:46:58 O.K-I HAVE ALL THE PARTS SPREAD OUT ON MY WORKBENCH. EXACTLY WHAT/WHERE AM I PUTTING THE RTV BLUE "AROUND THE SPRINGS"? DITTO ON "AROUND THE SPEEDOMETER"? (BETWEEN SPEEDO & HOUSING?, BETWEEN HOUSING AND TANK?, BETWEEN FINGER & EAR?) I KNOW I'LL BE SORRY FOR THE LAST ONE |

Marty, Put the RTV around outside of the springs and spray the silicone around the gasket between the speedo & tank. |
