Title: Squeeky speedometer
Post by giom-650 on 11/30/04 at 11:30:08

The squeeky speedometer is solved by pushing petroleum jelly between the rubber cowling seal and the fuel tank. You use a thin plastic card to slide the petroleum jelly between the seal and tank. Wipe the excess jelly off your tank when done.

I think most of the squeeking occurs at the front of speedo bezel seal. So, make sure that area is covered.
Mine no longer squeeks.  ;D

You lube a squeaky door hinge, so why not a squeaky speedo.  Makes perfect sense  ;)

I agree tha Lubing is a great idea,
But wouldn't it make more sense, in this case, to use a Grease (ie. for Ball joints etc.) instead of petroleum jelly?  Because I recall that petroleum degrades rubber
... as we all know from other aspects of life... ;) ;D

Silicone grease might be a better choice. The petroleum jelly is said to oxidize away quickly. I've found some information that petroleum jelly effects latex rubber, but I suspect the bezel seal is a synthetic rubber that has to stand up to the elements and so is not likely to be effected by the jelly.
Be careful not to use anything that will attack the paint on your tank. The seal is easier to replace than the tank. ;)

I'm planning to install a grease nipple on the speedo housing to make it easier to lube.

Try Google Images -- first use "grease nipple" and then "grease gun" to see images of nipples and the tool used to force grease thru the nipple into the space you wish to grease -- such as wheel bearings, ball joints, or speedometer housings.

Don't guys have all the fun with terminology?  We have male and female named parts for everything, plus greasy nipples, and pet c_ocks.  Too many terms to remember.

Don't worry Susan.  A grease nipple is just something that guys like to squirt grease into  :o
