Title: Diff. between LS650 & LS650P?
Post by Durandal on 12/01/04 at 16:15:14

I have a '01 Savage.  I finally got the owner's manual from my dealer.  The manual describes my bike as a LS650P.  Anyone here know what the difference is between the LS650 & LS650P?

I beleive its the addition of the fifth gear in 95 added the P. I see references to LS650F, PG, FG, PH, FH, PJ in some literature. I think... but could be wrong, that all F's are pre 95 and all P's are post. So that would be fifth gear (for the most part the main change) and maybe the second leter indicates wether or not they are California models (perhaps) or some model not sold in USA even.

LS650F versus LS650P
F - Flat bar
P - Pullback

The Savage was sold with the same type handlebar you see on the recent Savage (S40) in other countries - the Pullback bars were on the one's in the States.  Maybe not exclusive to the States, but that is what the F/P designation was for.

The other letters/numbers were for the different years - see either partspartners.com - ls650 info (http://www.partspartners.com/html/ls650.html) and the discussions in other posts (http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?board=RubberSideDown;action=display;num=1095471280)

Now that makes more sense than anything I could envision....

I like that.  My kind of answer  8)

However, it gets even deeper than just the F or P.

Mine is a LS650PY according to the sales papers.  What could the Y stand for?  It has something to do with the country or the state for the original sale.

The last character seems to reflect the year.  When I look stuff up on sites like www.ronayers.com, the varying years (or groups of years, maybe) have differing final characters.  My 1998 is a PW.

As discussed in this topic (Meaning of Letters (http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?board=RubberSideDown;action=display;num=1095471280)), the letters do indeed stand for the years. From Ron Ayers:

LS650P SAVAGE 1986 (G)
LS650P SAVAGE 1987 (H)
LS650P SAVAGE 1988 (J)
LS650P SAVAGE 1995 (S)
LS650P SAVAGE 1996 (T)
LS650P SAVAGE 1997 (V)
LS650P SAVAGE 1998 (W)
LS650P SAVAGE 1999 (X)
LS650P SAVAGE 2000 (Y)
LS650P SAVAGE 2001 (K1)
LS650P SAVAGE 2002 (K2)
LS650P SAVAGE 2003 (K3)

We had also decided that the "P" and "F" designated the style of handlebars as HogHunter pointed out above.

If the extra letter is the year, what about a designation for models within a model year?  Isn't there a difference with the CA models?

And how come they didn't continue the lettering with "Z"?

(I know.  Who cares.... :o )
