Title: bobber redux REDUX Post by sluggo on 03/12/05 at 16:46:09 i was never satisifed with the first set of fender struts. here's the rework. http://predator.bikepics.com/pics/suzuki-savage-04-bikepics-308129.jpg |
Title: Re: bobber Post by gitarzan on 03/13/05 at 04:45:33 much cleaner. |
Title: Re: bobber Post by Nightrain on 03/14/05 at 08:26:44 I agree, Much cleaner. It also follows the line of the rear tire better. Looks like you also got the seat a few inches further back as well. Every little bit helps ;D |
Title: Re: bobber Post by sluggo on 03/14/05 at 09:44:59 i just can't seem to leave thumper alone. springer seat gone, now mounted to frame. not a bad ride either here's the new new before and after http://predator.bikepics.com/pics/suzuki-savage-04-bikepics-309495.jpg and here's how will finally look. yeah right http://predator.bikepics.com/pics/suzuki-savage-04-bikepics-309505.jpg |
Title: Re: bobber redux Post by Nightrain on 03/14/05 at 10:58:41 Hey sluggo, for the direct to frame mount, were the posts on the seat exactly the same distance apart as the holes in the frame or did you have to fabricate a bracket? |
Title: Re: bobber redux Post by sluggo on 03/14/05 at 11:14:28 there was some slight fabrication done. as luck would have it. i used the struts i removed from the fender as the support brackets on the seat. the key to the whole deal has been the upper fender mounting holes. i'm using a hardend bolt to go through the holes that support both the bracket for the fender on bottom and the seat brackets on top. obviously the fender will bear no load, but that's a trade off i accept. |
Title: Re: bobber redux Post by gitarzan on 03/14/05 at 12:36:08 Acceptance is the first step toward healing ... |

Title: Re: bobber redux Post by gitarzan on 03/14/05 at 18:53:15 Not a bobber, but check out how arfing cool this looks. There's a sidecar on the other side, but I'm tripping out over the way he popped on a spring seat, leaving on the pillion seat. There's covers on the forks, painted belt guards, and a full front fender with an English number plate. Tool bags on the sides, and lowered handlebars and SHAZAAM! It's a Poor man's antique Brit bike. Compare: http://cmsa.club.fr/english/index.htm http://us.f1.yahoofs.com/groups/g_3609297/Retro+Outfit/SUZL.jpg?bcEzkNCBDgrs7fPK |
Title: Re: bobber redux REDUX Post by sluggo on 03/16/05 at 01:26:37 ok ok ok (in my best joe pesci). i know you all are pretty tired of looking at ole thumper, but this time here's one without the springer seat, or light on fender. the chrome signals are now dual element stop/brake. http://predator.bikepics.com/pics/suzuki-savage-04-bikepics-310629.jpg |
Title: Re: bobber redux REDUX Post by PerrydaSavage on 03/16/05 at 03:21:02 Sluggo my man ... never tire of lookin' at pics of your cool, bobbed Savage ... keep 'em comin'! |
Title: Re: bobber redux REDUX Post by Greg_650 on 03/16/05 at 05:29:00 Hey, Sluggo. How come you got rid of the springs? I thought that you liked them. |
Title: Re: bobber redux REDUX Post by Savage_Rob on 03/16/05 at 06:07:15 I was wondering that too. I was thinking I'd like that sort of springer seat on mine. Without the springs it seems like a monkey-butt generator... or at the very least a redefinition of the term hard-tail. |
Title: Re: bobber redux REDUX Post by sluggo on 03/16/05 at 07:25:05 it was a form vs function decision. ::) while i liked the ride with the springer seat, it never looked right. actually it doesnt ride as bad as one whould think. i did a tank draining ride yesterday and it wasn't bad. it's like an earler poster said in the monkey butt thread. you adapt to the seat. i can always go back to the springs if necessary. |

sorry P, i just want to make sure you keep up on your computer skills ;D i've said this before, but i believe thumper is configured how i want it.. i know it has the "ride" i like. everything is fitted to my size. it now feels more like i'm riding it, rather than riding "on" it. i can really fell the power between my legs (finally) :o now hopefully i can get out and see some nice scenery this year. and i'll continue to speak and post pictures. for you see i'm a storyteller. 8) Like nobody's figgured that out by now. |

Title: Re: bobber redux REDUX Post by Paladin on 03/16/05 at 22:07:05 When you are in High School, 30 years old is middle aged. When you hit your 30's middle age is somewhere in the 40's. I now realize that you are not old until you're around 80 and middle age starts maybe at 65. I know that what they claim are the 30-somethings are mere kids and they're letting babies into college. Riding the Savage drops a decade or two off your age. ;) |
Title: Re: bobber redux REDUX Post by WD on 03/17/05 at 02:13:34 Between you, me and our two modified bikes, we're gonna scare Sasquatch off the side of St Helens in June. :D I think I can pass for a younger version of you without much trouble, although, I did shave my beard off last week. I'm gonna have to get busy and find a set of turn signals for mine. I went to one Suzuki dealer last weekend, but it wasn't my kind of bike shop. It was all about "motorsports", not motorcycles. There was a Savage40 there. The shop was just too much about competition, not riding and wrenching. Will keep searching Portland, though |
Title: Re: bobber redux REDUX Post by gitarzan on 03/17/05 at 12:53:08 Same here. I'm spitting distance from Iron Pony which is about 85% dirt and competition. They've a few pieces of brickabrack for cruisers, and a respectable selection of saddlebags, etc., but mostly sports stuff. Jackets in 6 colors, etc. Then there's EasyRiders/BigDog downtown, but it's over priced and an American VTwin or nuttin'place. They do have a very nice cafe/diner inside however. Other than that, it's the Internet for me. |

that or i buy things not related to m/c's i was pricing out a winter riding suit. $250. everywhere. i go to a discount chain get a snowmobile suit for a whopping $50 dollars. then it went down to $30 two weeks later. the rear tail brakelights i pick up some chrome markers at a truckstop for 3 bucs each and then gutted them to put in dual element sockets. so the deals are out there you just need to be creative on where to find them. my local dealer isn't bad, he just doen't carry much stock. lot's of compitition stuff for motor cross. lots of sport bike stuff. virtually nothing curiser. i quess because when you buy a crusiser these days it has most of the stuff on it already. |

I tried to do that when I first got out of the Navy; got it about four inches past my collar and realized I just couldn't stand it any more so I kept it just on the long side Navy normal. Fifteen years later I found I preferred ease of maintenance to most other considerations, so I went for the #4 attachment on top and the #2 on the sides. It's been that way since. Quote:
That's a whole different story with which I'm also sadly familiar. However, the MicroTouch Trimmer "as seen on TV" does a great job. |

i got the seat used from johnd. i added the springs from a bicycle seat. alas i've changed it if you've seen the recent pics. it just sat to high. the seat is now fastened to frame. i've set the springs on the bic to the softest. heres' where you can pick them up new http://www.crc2onlinecatalog.com/chopper.htm it was a tough decision to remove the springs, it was pretty darn comfortable. but i was watching a buildoff show the other night and have figgured out how to replace the springs without raising the seat. i'll have to make a stronger seat pan in the excact shape of the seat then add multiple smaller springs to underside of seat. looks like it will work. |
Title: Re: bobber redux REDUX Post by Greg_650 on 04/01/05 at 10:25:33 Thanks for the link.... Essentially the Savage seat has an 11" seat pan. It looks like the solo seat might be thinner so with 3" springs (compressed under my mass) the increase might not be much at all. What about this one? http://www.crc2onlinecatalog.com/images/SoloseatB1.JPG http://www.crc2onlinecatalog.com/images/SoloseatB2.JPG ...and these springs? http://www.crc2onlinecatalog.com/images/Copy_of_Solospring1.JPG |
Title: Re: bobber redux REDUX Post by sluggo on 04/01/05 at 11:21:05 that's the set up. the 11 incher would work better with a stock type fender. the 9 inch looks better with the bob. the big thing in filling the excess space under the bottom |

between the backbone and bottom of seat.. the removed airbox would allow for a mountain bike shock under the seat. . as you look at the progression of my machine you can see the several different "tins" ive used to hide the space. final straw was just taking off the springs. but i've got something in for that. that mountain bike shock looks do able to. i just need to quit futzin' around with it and get my butt accustomed to the ride, that's really the only thing that makes the seat more comfortable. |
Title: Re: bobber redux REDUX Post by Greg_650 on 04/01/05 at 14:58:50 I hope to get creative and rewire that mess under the seat. What I would really like to find is a selection of multiple wire connectors so that I can start cutting and rerouting that "cluster" of crap that is normally hidden under the seat. At this point I plan to put the rectifier under the battery box. After that, I'm not sure 8) |

It is out of the Horse Backstreet Choppers. I think Xsspeed designed the set-up. The drawings and rough in look like a 4 year old was playing with a box of crayons, but finished off, it seems to be a fairly solid set-up. Same article walks through foot clutch hand shift conversion. Ah, found it. May 2003, issue #32. C'mon over. -WD |

Going to try and tap the dent out instead of "blast it out". Savage tank seams are soldered, and I've managed to obliterate more than one welded tank with a model rocket ignitor. Oops. See you in June, or sooner. If the rain ever lets up...Need scuba gear to go out to the truck. At least my "western washington native" gills are working again... -WD |
Title: Re: bobber redux REDUX Post by sluggo on 04/05/05 at 00:42:08 after carefull consideration, and a two tank ride, thumper is back to being a springer seat. the seat looked cool mounted on the frame, is was just to much for my lily white butt to take.. so springer it is.. |

Title: Re: bobber redux REDUX Post by Greg_650 on 04/08/05 at 07:00:18 Those are all pretty cool. I like the first one because of that raw naked look and the second one for the white wall tires.
