Ok guys - this questions probably been asked a million times so forgive me.  I bought my Savage used and it currently have about 5000 KM on it.  I have no idea what maintenance the previous owner did to it.  Is there anything special i should be doing to this bike other than the regular lube/oil kind of stuff??

Savage maintenance: Change oil and filter every 2-3K miles. Check tire pressure and add as necessary every time you get ready to ride. Change brake fluid once a year. Add some light oil, such as automatic transmission fluid or 2 stroke oil, 1 or 2 ounces, to the gas every tank or every other tank to prevent the carb slide from galling. Make sure the belt is loose enough to twist 90 degrees to itself mid-way betwen the pulleys, without being so loose it skips, factory setting WILL damage the rear pulley. Change the gas and fuel tap vacuum lines once a year, cheap, prevents unnecessary heartaches/headaches. Adjust the valves IF they get noisy, I have over 12K miles on it with zero valve adjustments, they are still working as new. (Although, I do recommend at least checking them occasionaly) Brake pads/shoes as needed, the rear shoes should wear out faster than the front pads, my 98 is still using the stock shoes and pads, lots of life left. Swap the turn siganl and brake light bulbs out for long life versions, my stock bulbs are still working, but... Oh, yeah, air filter once a year (I don't, mine is 7 years old  ::)).

Basically it. Maintaining one of these is pretty inexpensive. Most of it is correcting factory design errors.
These bikes are anvil reliable if the oil level is kept right, and the belt run looser than the factory recommends.
