Title: I need a "new" project...
Post by WD on 04/06/05 at 22:57:45

What are the chances any of you have an older British bike gathering dust in the barn? Or a Honda CL100-125? Or other street thumper? The older, crustier and closer to free the better. The stepson still wants my old 98 Savage, so I would like to find a ratty (or roached out) older bike to redo.

Any of the following sought: CBs, GSs, Triumph, BSA, Norton, any thumper, Puch, Allstate 125-?, pre-64 HD big twin, any pre-53 Indian, any pre-31 Excelsior or Henderson pre-or post-merge, any HD flathead, even another dead Savage would be fine.

I have a line on a 1950 80" Chief, been sitting for almost 40 years without being touched, even dusted off. Sitting next to it are 3 K-model HDs (pre-sportster baby v-twins), a Triumph Tiger 650 (1950s I think), a K code Mustang powered 64 Ranchero, and a 1967 or very early 68 RS/SS Camaro, convertible with 427 and factory A/C... Late childhood neighbor passed away earlier this year, but his wife is so ill that I haven't been able to work anything out with her. So...if I can't raid her garage, can any of you kick a junkheap or two my way? I'd appreciate it.  ::)

WD, check over at the International Scooterist BBS in the Cafe Racer section. Lots of the guys over there are into some of these things and have some to sell. The Puch and Allstates abound around there as well.

Where are you located? I might know someone in your area thats holding... perhaps a contact for you.

I guess a link might help too

But don't just confine yourself to that part... wander around the Moped board and of course the main spam board as well.

All that I can say is, why give the stepson your Savage?  Put it in your will and work on that now  ::)

Greg, I offered him the bike at Christmas. He's loved it since the first time he rode the p-pad back in 99ish on the MS Gulf Coast. I tried to get him to ride it at our farm outside Memphis. Got him to try it at our temporary home in Puyallup, WA, my grandparents old place. He took off across the backyard, hit the old apple tree stump, got airborn, nearly hit the greenhouse, and piled up in a rhodedendron bush. At our current house, he got good enough on it to drag the peg ends in a tight turn circle, without any major problems. He's earned the right to ride, and he's good with THAT particular scoot.

Mechanically, he's a mental midget. His dad's fault, never even was taught to check the oil in his old Chevy truck. He's been learning to ride and to maintain the Savage. I like redoing the bike, don't much care to ride it anymore.

My second surgery is failing. Low spine stabilty is gone, my feet are numbing out again, constantly in pain again. Rather than let the bike sit up for another 3.5-4 years, I made the decision to give it to him. I can still be hands -on with the bike, and it is still in the family. To me, much better than trading it in on something with a viable suspension. Besides, it's just a bike, I can always get another one later. I've had my fun with it, now it's his turn.

If I can't avoid getting a two level fusion, such is life. The neurosurgeons have been saying since around June 2002 that I needed a fusion, the state didn't agree. So I've had to go through two (technically four) laminectomy/micro/classic discectomies, for no reason other than Washington state has a screwed up injured worker program. Technicall 4 because they worked on both levels, both surgeries. While I could ride with the current problems, I choose not to. Even I have to occasionally "cave and behave".

WD,

I'm very sorry to read about your spine problems  :(

I fully sympathize with your idea of at least getting your hand on the Savage, that way you will feel the changes you make to it from your son's feedback.

I just wonder what you did to get such a bad spine problem. I just hope you did not get hurt so bad while rinding a bike.

Take care and enjoy life.

RW, it is a combination of growing up riding rigid choppers, smoking like a foundry chimney, and getting crushed on a job site. Even though I'm the one suffering, I still say better that I got hurt than the kid who was working with me at the time of the injury. Just the way I am. I'll eventually get the problem repaired.

What do you mean? Will you get final solution through fusion?

I just hope you get ever back on the saddle.
And you give me another reasong to despise rigid frames...
no shock, no work

Take care,

RW

I was just teasing, and I certainly sympathize with your injury.  Though I haven't had any debilitating work related accidents. I certainly have my own age related back pains and knowing how those are, I can understand.  I had one doctor attribute them to my years of dirt bike riding too.  He told me that I "abused myself".

Your attitude is the same as mine.  I may not be able to ride like hell anymore, but I certainly love bikes more than ever.  If I can't ride them, I can at least work on them....
