Title: Ape Hangers Post by Nightrain on 04/08/05 at 14:33:55 After all the fussing about the drag bars. I think I want apes hangers ??? anyone want to swap apes for a set of drag bars & risers. The apes must be 16" 18" or 20" and must be 1" bars. Will swap all cables too if you are set up for apes (but not necessary). A cool bunch w/ varing brands of bikes, have fun, they do charity runs and lobby TN state lawmakers. TN has an "Ape Hanger" law onthe books, but I met John Pierce there and he has reported; "I’m confident that we will win the fight to remove the apehanger provision from Tennessee law. Right now we have some legislators who think that Tennessee should in fact, regulate one and only one engineering parameter of motor vehicles sold in this state. We see no compelling reason for Tennessee to do that. They were pretty amazed when the local Big Dog dealer showed up and told them he had just sold four bikes, generated $6,000 in sales tax and that all four bikes violated our current apehanger law." ;D ;D ;D |

Trust me, I've ridden apehanger equipped bikes since 1987, most of them with 16-20" bars on 2-8" risers. Believe me, the 13.65" on stock Savage risers is about right. TN huh? Funny, the motor officers never said word boo about high bars, open exhaust or my red rear signals and blue dot taillight, ALL of which are illegal in TN. And that was in the Memphis area... -WD |

Until lawmakers ride, and in the Bible belt that is still fairly rare, dumb anti-bike(r) legislation will be on the books. It's not just TN that is anti-apehanger, they are illegal or unwelcome in most of the southern states. I spent 6 years riding in the southland, never had any problems with noise, bluedot tailights, red or blue rear turn signals (both only legal for law enforcement in TN,FL), handlebar height, or such, UNLESS I had long hair and a full beard. When I rode "illegal" bikes looking like a "normal" person, I was left alone. -WD |

Inspect handlebars and reject if: 1. Handlebars or grips are higher than operator's shoulder level when properly seated upon motorcycle. 2. Handlebars are not of sturdy construction or if of lightweight bicycle quality. 3. Handlebars do not provide a minimum of 18 inches between grip ends. 4. Handlebars are not equipped with grips of non-slip design and material. 5. Handlebars prevent front fork from rotating from stop to stop. 6. Handlebars are cracked or deformed. 7. Handlebars are improperly aligned with front wheel. 8. Handlebars are not securely fixed, however, rubber mounted handlebars may have slight movement. 9. Handlebars that have been modified or repaired in an unsafe manner. |

Don't freehang them like mine are, they beat the ever lovin' s**t out of the tank paint, quick fast and in a hurry. For the brake hose, Goodridge, Russel, Earls or Godwin High Performance, with 12mm banjo adaptors. The hoses come with AN fittings (aerospace) for ends, the banjos adapt AN to the bike. Those four companies are top quality. You could go with a cheap rubber hose if you want, they all carry them, but for the long run and funky bends involved with following the apehangers...go with braided stainless hose. Rubber over that long a span can lose pressure to the caliper pretty easily. Think "bendy-art" balloons. If you plan to keep the brake, steel will let it work better, it doesn't expand under pressure. You'll need to extend the right hand wiring. Buy non-dimpled bars, the later model dimpled bars are oval, you will have to clearance your switch housings to make them work on dimpled bars. The housings need all the beef they can keep, they are pretty fragile as is. With any HD spec apehanger, don't be surprised if the riser caps/bodies need some minor clearancing as well. Just a light 60 grit sanding helps the caps catch the knurling on the bars. And tighten the riser bolts until they sqeak. Otherwise, the bars WILL move when you least expect it. Found that one out the hard way... -WD |

No "real" insurance required, and not matter how it looks or rides, regulations do not care. As long as you have a headlight, a tail light, turn signals and good brakes and tires, open pipes, ape hangers, suspension are not important... 8) Even more, a complete new highway with electronic toll system FORGOT :o to consider bikes, so now there is no "beeper" for motorbikes and we can now ride for free on a paid expressway... ;D Here, lawmakers are good, they leave us alone ;) RW |

Read a book recently by American, Patrick Symmes entitled Chasing Che ... in the mid-90's, Symmes re-created Che Guevara's 1952 motorcycle journey around South America ... brilliant! I was particularly interested in the section of the trip which took the author through Chile. Nightrain ... I'm a bit surprised to learn out the level of bureaucratic regulation in Mass.?? Strangely, here in Canada (where we tend to be much more regulated than the U.S.), there are no stipulations on the type of handlebars a Bike can or can't have (at least in Newfoundland anyways) ... hell, we don't even have to get motorcycles inspected ... annual registration costs $75.00CAD though ... |

Paella, coastal sunsets, mile upon mile of low density roads, why couldn't I have been discharged when I was stationed there :( ??? :'( Bike laws are written and presented by non-enthusiasts, or those who are outright hostile to everything motorcycle. Unfortunately, they see only the 1%ers when they see a modified bike. They don't see the millions of dollars of tax revenues for parts, fuel, accessories, motels, campgrounds, restaurants, etc. They don't see the research dollars collected for dozens of international charities, ranging from critters to cancer to MS/MD to children's medical research, etc. They don't see the doctor, lawyer, stockbroker, COP, firefighter, GI, or other normal people (hundreds of thousands if you include quads, dirtbikes) who ride. They see the drug trafficers form the 70s. They don't see the community involvement, the toy runs, hospital runs, the fundraiser for the ambulance/fire services, the new equipment provided to rural communities for the benefit of ALL, not just those of us who ride. I could go on for hours...for my money, highbars+custom lighting+loud pipe does not =criminal. Why is my bike so much worse than a "street monster" 4X4, a flatulence piped mega bassed ground scraping "ricer" car, the lowriding Impala full of "guntoting thugs"...
