Title: Charging System
Post by kyscootertrash on 04/12/05 at 10:58:33

Hi Gang. Just bought a 1987 Savage for the significant other, but the charging system seems to be weak. The best voltage reading I get is 12-13 volts at the regulator. When testing the Stator, the AC voltages seem to be within spec, but resistance checks show a connection to ground. On the older bikes this meant the Stator was fried. Does this hold true on the Savage?

Yes Sir,
And the simptoms show exactly this. Usually when one of the legs is bad You have to rev-up the engine way high to get some charging.
Just make sure when You are doing the stator tests You disconnect the stator from the Rectifier regulator.
It is possible to be not the stator but pinched wires between the stator cover and the case.

Thanks. I've already checked the wiring. I finally pulled the Stator cover off to check visually. One of the coils was noticeably BURNT UP. I'll start looking for a new Stator online. Thanks for the info, Ride safe.
