Title: is whine normal?
Post by rebslb13 on 04/12/05 at 20:12:21

Hi you all.  I am hearing a whine I don't know about. It could be the clutch or belt maybe? It happens when I let off the gas to go into a curve at about 40 - 50 mph.  When I get on the gas again it quits. I've got about 2200 miles and recently changed the oil to Penz 10w40. It did it prior to the change. Of course, the Suzuki shop says I need to run the Suz oil. How much whine is "normal?" All my prior bikes had chains that made so much noise I probably wouldn't have heard a clutch whine, if there is one. Whachathink?

could be belt misalignment check the front pulley.  it's not a big deal.

Mine does that too. a 2001 with 8500 miles. I am sure it is the front pulley but I have adjsted the belt at the rear and I know it is right. Being that the front pulley insn't adjustable,  I just tune it out. My advise, get a louder exhaust  ;D

Umm, ever heard of tire whine? When you coast you can hear it, when you get back on the gas, you can't, even with the way too quiet stock exhaust.

The front pulley can whine, but usually doesn't. If it is, your belt is too tight. Loosen it off until you can twist the lower run 90 degrees to itself. That is the proper setting, anything else puts too much strain on the belt and puleys.

If you think the clutch is whining, check the lever and clutch arm freeplay. Too much or too little, the clutch can make noise. And wear out rapidly due to improper engagement.

My money is on tire whine or too tight belt.

Thanks for your comments. I wondered about the belt. I'll check it out tomorrow hopefully. The sales pitch they gave me abuot the oil made me wonder about the clutch. That's the problem with a quiet bike, I hear all these noises that make me paranoid. I'm too tight to shell out the bucks for a different exhaust as long as this one works. My wife says I'm good at tuning her out so tuning out the whine shouldn't be a problem. After all, she's a lot louder!  ;)

thank goodness not me..

i was working at an L.A. radio station at the time. he made an appearance, and like everyone i told him mine. he loved it, used it on air gave me credit. came back a year later used it again, and gave credit. the way it works in comedy circles is you use someones bit 3 times giving credit, then it's yours. HERE IT IS.

IF YOUR DOG PASSES GAS, AND YOU CLAIM IT AS YOUR OWN, YOU MAY BE A REDNECK.
