Title: Running Hot.....  :o
Post by LondonThing on 04/24/05 at 05:07:02

Ok, this is the first Air cooled bike iv ever had, Now this may sound silly but if i left any of my other bikes on idle for 20 mins with no water in them, that wouldnt be good, So is it safe just to not worry about the temperature of the savage engine... I have had the engine appart in a million peices and no where can i see a temperatur cut out, mechanical or electrical....

Somone just reasure me that it will never overheat..

even in summer stuck in trafic... lol :-)

You don't have to worry too much, but it isn't a good practice to let it sit for 20 minutes at idle without airflow across the cooling fins.  In that case the oil is the only coolant, but generally it isn't too much of a problem.  It is a matter of common sense.

Now, what I have done many times in such a situation, is to place a fan on the floor at the front of the engine...on the exhaust.  This will allow you to tinker with it while it is running without worry....you can even feel the heat being carried off the engine too.

Yes, this is a problem with almost all the air cooled bikes. If the Savage survives in Arizona You don't have to worry, but this is a valid point and this is why the oil quality is a top priority, especially when You have 650 cc with only 1 cyl. to radiate the heat and only 2qts of oil.
Make sure there is always enough oil in the engine. Change it more frequently than Suzuki recommends.
