Title: Bought it for $750 YES, $750
Post by bobo383 on 04/25/05 at 19:11:58

This 2000 Shadow VLX600 has been stored in a ratty house in our neighborhood for 3 years.  The front tire was flat and the battery was dead.  Took 6 hours, change of fuel, carb cleaning, and a new battery.  The bike is now tip-top.  It looks brand new.

1,631 miles.  $750.  Still pinching myself.  Sorry for the dim garage pics, but time I got to photoing the bike it was dark outside.

Now did I mess up or what.  You can't see the Savage in the background!  Best you can see is the handlebar sticking up behind the VLX.  DARN this might get me kicked off the site...

At least you also can't see the HD.

Well maybe you can ride the savage again - didn't you wife take it over? - see it's savage related

I rode my friends 600 Shadow before I bought the Savage.  I wanted that bike so bad, I offered him $3500.  That was in 2003.  His is a 2000 model as well.  He turned it down.  I bought the Savage, and a week later, he sold the Shadow for $3000.  Needless to say, I haven't talked to him too much.n  Bobo, When my financial situation gets better, I'll offer you some real money for that bike.  I'd like to have one, and give the Savage to the wife.

Just went out for a ride with the wife.  The bike is extremely comfortable for both rider and passenger, but it's a little underpowered riding two up.

One up, plenty of power but not a slingshot like the Savage.

I was put in a round room and told to pee in the corner.  After 2 weeks I couldn't hold it in no more.  So they sent me back here.

Same thing.

$750 for a near new VLX?!?  I almost bought one, but figured 4 gears weren't enough. Sure wish we still had the wife's old 450 Rebel, 6 gears was almost sufficient.  ;D  Shadow suspension still putting the Savage suspension to shame?

Suspension is first class.  I need to search this site to see if anyone has tried different Savage spring options.

Of course the bike feels 500 pounds or better, and it could use a lower first gear.

He also had a little 4 wheel drive mitsu-dodgy that my friend bought for $250 - everything worked on it.

The man's health had degenerated to where he could not wrench on anything anymore, so the stuff was just sitting and he decided to clean up.  Right place at the right time.

He saw all my cars and bikes by my house and figured I would take good care of his bike.

I'v never driven a VLX but I had a 2000 Shadow Aero and was the best bike I've ever owned. The savage is its own breed but Honda really does put it together. ;)
congrats on the sweet deal!

Hey Bobo, if you have too many bikes over there in Arlington, I'll babysit your Savage for you, I'd like to have one to take to Lake Fork to ride while hubby  fishes. I hate hauling mine in the back of the pickup from Weatherford.

If I rememeber clearly, the Shadow 600 is around 450 pounds.  That would explain a better ride.  We rode our bikes onto the shipping scales at work, and I remember his being 100 pounds heavier.  Are you going to part with the bike, Bobo?  Or are you gonna part with your Savage? I rode it, and I want it.

Everything is for sale, feel free to make an offer - use ebay for a pricing guide, that's what I do.

Don't know what we are going to do right now.  I have somebody coming over to look at the 65 Buick (other post:http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?board=Market;action=display;num=1114317220)

Wife and I talked about selling the Savage today, but she's really attached to it.  She also likes the Shadow but does not want a heavy bike yet.  I'm not happy with the Shadow's power but other than that it's a great bike.  The jetting is stock, and it takes a long time to warm up enough to run right with no choke.  I believe jetting and mixture screw adjustment may perk the Shadow up on the low end.

Going richer sure woke up my Savage.

We'll keep you posted.

your right about the long warm up cycle.  I always had to wait for my buddy when we left work.  His always took 3-5 minutes longer to run without choke.  My Savage will generally run fine after a minute.  Even when it's cool out.

two cylinders, twice as long to warm up.

I've noticed the Honda Shadow also takes a while.  No problem, I just take off with the choke on and shut it off later, usually when the bike chokes at a red light, I check the petc0ck position, and then I remember...

If the Savage had a better ride, it would be the best thing available.

Any aftermarket springs for the Sav?

Looks like the 11 inch progressive 412's - i'm still trying to decide on 90/130 or 115/155 rate springs - best I can tell via measurements the stock '95 spings are between 90 and 100 lbs/in - in the front forks I'd bet some some progressive rates in there would help out as well - reduce some of the dive on hard brakeing - ceramic pads hanging on the wall - i'm trying to wear out the current pads first - and maybe a 2 1/2 inch hole in the filter cover with a 160 main.... be ready to go!

there are some aftermarket springs and shcks for the Savage, but I can't remember the brand name at this moment.  I'll post it as soon as I find it.

Title: STUPID, sooooo stupid
Post by bobo383 on 04/28/05 at 17:45:26

I thought the Shadow 600 was a little sluggish just off the line.  Rear tire only had 10psi.  No wonder.

Bike runs like it should now that I have 36 psi.  Now it will chirp the rear tire if you quick-foot the clutch, like the Savage will.  Don't think it will catch the Savage though.

Wife and I might race after the kids go night-night. ;D

Take that ever how you want.   ;D

Could lead to some interesting wagers

I would bet on the Savage with it's lighter weight to take initial lead but the higher HP/tune of the Shadow pulling ahead as the speed/distance increases.

So tell us who won!
