What are the lowest speeds i can expect in each gear before the bike starts to "judder"?

With stock everything, you'll be juddering along if you go 35 in 5th....the others I haven't really tried.

I think it all depends on each individuals proportions my friend. Someone once told me you can't put a gallon into a quart container! ;D

Or punch a hole in the bottom.

How slow you can go depends on how quick you try to accelerate or if going uphill. If you accelerate slowly you can dog it down to a slower speed than if you try to accelerate quickly. The more you "gun it" the more it will shake. Probably not good to make it "jubber" too much. :P

You can get your bike to do 35mph in 5th gear? Mine shudders at 35 in 3rd... >:(

Each bike is different, so, I'd say intentionally stall the bike out in each gear. Only way you'll know for sure. Any abandoned airfields you can practice on?

Probably within the first couple of months of buying the Savage I took off from a stop sign and it didn't accelerate very well. Then I figured out I was in 3rd gear. Be easy on me, remember this is my first motorcycle and I still occasionally lose track of what gear I'm in. Then when the shift rod bent I was stuck in 4th gear in a tiny town in the middle of nowhere New Mexico & had to crawl along at about 20 or 25 mph looking for a good place to pull off the road.

Caveat: I am very abusive to hardware.

Checked my riding on the way to work -- I am shifting into 5th at 30-35 mph and it pulls with a smooth thumping. Lower than 30 is more of a judder (which is actually a legitimate word!)

Actually I think it's called Lugging.

But anyway, I've noticed 2 things.

1. Much under 10mph and I've got to ride the clutch.

2. I've a bad habit of being in the wrong gear (too high) quite often. All that thumper needs is a good GOOSE on the throttle, and it pulls me right out. I think about the only time I've ever stalled was pulling from a dead stop in 5th. OTOH, I've goosed it and got away in 3rd from a stop many times.

I have that trouble sometimes too. I'm getting better, but I still lose track rather frequently. For the most part, I just use 2, 3, and 4 as "pass through" gears on my way to 5 for cruising, or down to 1 for stopping.

Most of my riding is rural...mostly because I have to go 20 miles from home just to begin to get to anything remotely civilized, so I don't have much city driving.

35 in 5th is about the bottom limit for me (with a stock Sporty muff and no jet work). I know when the stock muff was on, it would go down to about 32 and still pull away with a hefty throttle roll with no shake or rattle from the engine.

My 400cc, chain drive seriously wants to stall at 20 km/hr in 5th gear... and it does "judder" there!!! ;D

Ain't it cool the way it will still pull in the higher gears.
I try to downshift if she "judders", gotta be rough on the bottom end w/ all the backlash. I do cruise in 5th just above "judder speed". Also the new carb will idle down real low and it sounds way cooler at the light w/ the open pipe.
