Title: A brush with death
Post by sunny on 04/28/05 at 09:07:34

well, i had a brush with death yesterday in the hov lane going home from work.

fyi: death drives a new red convertible w/ white rag top and likes to pass bikers in the area between the concrete dividers north of the i35e and 67 split. death's license plate number is W25 XDG. he wears a red do-rag and appears to be of african american origin. death was last seen heading east on i20.

what could i have done differently?
i was heading south in the left third of my lane(the only lane) to prevent bad effects from the wind gusts i was experiencing from the south east. i was maintaining the same speed as the suv 5 car lengths in front. the hov lane wasn't crowded.

the only change i think i would have done differently is my apparel. i don't look intimidating, dangerous, or like a "biker" in any way. maybe if i did, death would have thought twice.

Death... aka.. Jackhole, wouldn't have cared how you dressed, unless he saw shotgun slung across your back or bike.

Seriously people like these need their license revoked.

There are a lot of them out there. The favorite stupid trick around here is the cage drives down the middle of the road and doesn't move over when your coming at him on the bike. With any luck your idiot will do something real stupid and take himself out of the gene pool. Just be careful out there. Ed L.

I have a lot of family and friends in law enforcement in the Texas Oklahoma area. Almost all ride.  I am forwarding a copy of your post to some family members no doubt it will piss them off. Lets see if we can ruin his drive as he had ruin yours ;)

Glad you are OK sunny and that no misfortune came your way ... Yup, too many driver's act as if the Road is their own private domain and that all others who inhabit it are trespassers ... as someone else said, maybe doo-rag'll take himself out ... hopefully he won't take anyone else with him ...
'Round here, people seem to not know what the stalk on the left side of their steering wheel is for ... I feel like following someone who fails to signal, wait 'til they stop, and point out that their directionals "don't work" ... ha, that and SUV drivers in inclement weather ... after a snowfall, you'll always see several of these off the road or overturned in a ditch somewhere ... they must think that 4 wheel drive means anywhere, anyhow, anytime at any speed ... tsk, tsk ...

Ain't that the truth...duh!  We have a lot of that in Maine.

And Sunny, I'm really glad you're okay.  Those "Yikes" moments can really shake you up sometimes.

Glad you're okay Sunny.  I know the feeling.  My last one was several months ago and was a white panel van, whose sole occupant (I refuse to call him a driver or even an operator) apparently had no idea that the vehicle had mirrors or even side windows.  I was in the lane to his right and perfectly even with his passenger-side window.  He decided this was no obstacle to making an unsignaled lane change to the right.  Luckily, we were doing just under 50 and I was in 4th gear.  I was able to accelerate out of his path.  He never even put on his brakes as far as I could tell.  I guess you just never know about some people's kids, huh?  It just reminded me to take extra pains to make myself noticed.  In fact, I am convinced that having since changed to a louder exhaust has made a difference in that regard.  I think it at least helps anyway.

Sooner or later, everyone on a bike gets to smell death's breath.  I've been lucky lately, but have had a few close calls a time back.

I remember years ago on a 305cc Honda, going down an almost empty freeway at about midnight, some idjit in a fullsize van (that's all there was back then) passed me to the left about halfway then merged back in on me, forcing me to change lanes real fast.  I could never imagine anyone not having done that on purpose.

Title: Re: A brush with death
Post by sunny on 04/29/05 at 07:48:43

i guess what had me rattled so bad was the actual closeness of that call.
if i had gotten ONE wind gust, i wouldn't be here.
he was that close.

in the hov right there, there is scarcely 18 inches of pavement between the lines and the concrete walls.

An a=sshole is an aggressively obnoxious individual, one who makes a pugnacious use of his offensive qualities to intimidate others. So defined, no one can be an not a very nice person inadvertently, and being an not a very nice person is indeed the kind of willful project for which a person can be held morally accountable.

So glad you are ok

I agree. In my town more than half of the police are riders themselves.

I had a similar experiance about a month ago. I was in a left turn lane and a car that was in the "go straight" lane decided he needed to turn left.  He nearly drove me into oncomming traffic. And they say your not supposed to brake in a turn.I dont know how i managed to hit the horn, call him an a-hole and avoid the impact all at once. I do know that I pulled over and sat there for about 5 minutes waiting for my heart rate to come back to normal.

I have been thinking about mounting a mini digital camera on the bike to videotape (digitally) as i ride just so people can see what really happens. I found a nice little one at cyclegadgets.com but it is a little to pricy for me.

this topic validates the point that YOU ARE INVISIBLE.
there are not enough signal lights in the world to make the machine visible. ride accordingly. buy good life insurance. mostly learn not to count or dwell  on  the "near misses", you will drive yourself nuts.

Please know this.  There are two types of riders,
those who have been down, and those who will go down.  me 6 times in the last 20 plus years.

one thing i did that helps somewhat in traffic is a cage horn. scares the crap out of people.

Glad your Ok Sunny. Since I moved to the DFW area 6 years ago I've seen the rudest, most careless drivers of anyplace I've lived, in this country & overseas. I got hit in Flowermound & by the time I got home I forgot all but 3 digits of his license plate #. Now I keep a small notepad, pencil & pen in my handlebar bag for that. I wear a bright red fullface helmet that I'm think of painting bright orange. Take care.

It  must be something in the air.  When I was coming homw from work the other day, with a pack of Dr Pepper on the tank, an idiot in a hoddless Subaru decided to pass about 5 cars on a 2 way highway (FM157),  I saw him off in the distance, so I slowed and moved off the road into the ditch.  He flew right past me, on my half of the road, and barely made it back in his lane bfore creaming another car.  His car could barely go faster than the traffic he was passing.  Looked like he was barely old enough to have a license.  I don't know about up north, but down here every darn kid has an import hatchback that they think could outrun everything on the road.  They, by far, have caused more near misses for me than any other group.

Pardon my ignorance, I'm a country bumpkin, what's an hov lane?

It seems inevitable, I've had two crashes with cages where they tried to run over me. Nearly got run over the other day by an old codger in a hurry to get to the grocery store before they closed (I saw him turn in). Defensive driving is a MUST.  And not just life insurance but also health insurance.

My wife's first husband was killed on a Honda 350, he was at fault though, trying a bad pass.

HOV = High Occupancy Vehicle.  Cities have implemented HOV lanes for vehicles carrying more than just a driver, and motorcycles.  It is generally less crowded and will be running 65-70 mph next to the 25 mph traffic jam.  The HOV lane is the one on the traffic's left, separated by the double-yellow + white lines:

http://savage.andruschak.net/FTP/HOV.jpg

Not having to deal with the above is good.

Title: Re: A brush with death
Post by WD on 04/30/05 at 22:50:44

Riding a motorcycle in the HOV lanes around Seattle is a suicide ride. Even the motor officers (motorcycle cops, AKA, bacon bits  ::)) avoid them. Kids in tuner hatchbacks tend to go 80-100 mph in the HOV lanes, and of course, that is with just a driver, no passengers. HOV lanes are a nice concept, but, around here, they don't work very well. PLUS, you can soon buy a single occupancy pass to drive in them. I hate this state.
-WD

How many here are familiar with the term "bacon bit"? Or am I the only former truck driver?

Title: Re: A brush with death
Post by rebslb13 on 05/01/05 at 22:30:03

Sorry, the bumpkin here again and I don't know what a "bacon bit" is. You folks actually ride in traffic like that??? Wow. I used to have to occassionally in a cage but a bike must be scary, I was scared in a car. I hated Dallas the most, but Chicago, St. Louis and Houston weren't far behind. When I've gone on bike trips I avoid city traffic, even if it's a long way around. Plan to in the future too.  :o

Title: Re: A brush with death
Post by WD on 05/01/05 at 23:52:44

Reblslb13, bacon bit is just trucker slang. Kinda derogatory. You know how cops are referred to as "pigs".  Well, on some CB channels, they break it down further. Sow= Caprice or Crown Vic. Boar= DOT code enforcement SUV. Piglet= Mustang or Camaro interceptor. Bacon bit= motorcycle cop (because the bike is little). Also known as "Evel Kneivels", because you've got to have a big brass pair to ride a garbage wagon (full dress police Harley) on the interstates.

And that traffic photo was light. Rush hour in Seattle, it can take 4 hours to go 1 mile. Sad, the whole state only has maybe 7 million residents, 4-5 million of which are on the west side of the Cascade Mountain range. Don't ask me why. The west side is barely tolerable as a place to visit, let alone live.

Being a shift worker i have never had to travel in rush hour traffic  :) A lot of my mates (9 to 5ers) cannot understand how i can get up at 4am.....but then my shift is only 8 hours plus 30 mins travelling, theirs are 8 hours plus 2 to 4 hours travelling...who's got the best deal?
We now have trains and trams directly into the city so I use them if I need to go....no hassel :)

That looks very similar to my commuting ride every day... the good thing about such a bottleneck is that you go slow, maneuver between cages and if any idiot makes a bad move, the relevant side mirror is gone in a blip...  :o sometimes I even look for potential candidates ahead and swerve to get closer, have them make a bad move and knock the mirror off... OK, OK, I know it's bad, ugly and disgusting, but have you thought of a better, "hands-on" learning experience for those su*kers?  ;D
Sure it helps I carry no plate on the back...  ::)

I would try to get Sunny's bastard address out of the plate numbers and pay a polite, well-mannered visit to his porch...  >:(

I wonder if all those people stuck in traffic realize how much of thier life they are loosing because of the hours spent sitting in the traffic. I tend to go postal after about a hour in traffic, just hate spending all my free time going to and from a job no matter what it pays.
Instead of knocking off mirrors try pepper spray in the vents of the cages that are going for the Darwin award, heard about that trick from a New York biker who rides in traffic a lot. Of coarse s-ht happens so fast when on a bike you don't have much time to do anything but react and pucker, even reaching for the pepper spray will take too much time. Ed L.

Title: Re: A brush with death
Post by sluggo on 05/02/05 at 16:05:53

i've found that an openfaced helmet, and a good lougie work wonders. that until i forgot i was wearing a full faced helmet one day. oppss..  :o

i drove daily in the photo palalidn posted, the majority of the time the cages were kewl. very seldom did i actually have to add to my "antenna" collection. most of the time it was just the cage not paying attention and drifting over while talking on the phone. when people hold the phone on their left ear they have a tendency to drift that direction.

theres really nothing you can do about the agressive drivers, except try to identify them and stay out of there way.

sunny, if he's registered why not come up with a complaint. make his day a little rougher.

Wouldn't know -- I haven't commuted more than four miles in nearly three decades.  Once I started riding to work I found that I have the opposite problem. (http://www.dslretorts.com/Paladin/archives/000702.html).

Sluggo, yeah the full face helmet can be a real pain sometimes, but I like the protection (let's remember what started this thread). Hope it wasn't too messy in there.
Paladin, can go you one further. I commuted on my bike(s) for about 17 years till I transfered to my last job. My commute was across the hall from the master bedroom to the front bedroom converted to my office, about 3 feet! When I wasn't traveling to other cities that's where I worked. After a couple years I sold my bike since I found I hardly ever rode it ('81 Kaw 550). There just wasn't anywhere close that was a nice ride and I got away from it till I bought the Savage last year after retiring.
WD, thanks for the slang lesson. I try not to hold it against truckers in general that when I was in Viet Nam a trucker stole my old high school sweetie. I actually consider myself lucky, I wouldn'ta hooked up with the "little woman" (who is 5" taller than me) otherwise.  ;D

The police are probally looking for any dirt they can get on this idiot. I could not get his name, because the pages in the links are no longer available, but if you type his licence plate number into google, this is what comes up.

Seems the fool never even did time for his crime, so I am sure he thinks he is above the law. BUT he is probably STILL on probation.
