Hi I just joined as of yesterday, I own a 1986 650LSF, I have owned this bike for about 6 or so years and find it is a awesome city ride, but to light for the highway, transmission is 4 gears, I hear that newer bikes have a 5 speed, I bet that helps on the highway

welcome,  the 5th gear is more an overdrive. the bike still weighs about 350lb and is geared to top out in the mid to late 80's lots of powere though.

Hey HawkEye

Top gear on the 5 speed is only 3% higher than top on the four speed.

They are nearly identical. My 5 speed 98 has lost more than one stoplight to stoplight race to a 4 speed Savage when it was still stock.

IMHO, the 4 speed bikes were better made...

Welcome,
The 4-speed and 5-speed  engines are almost the same, with exeption of the starter clutch and the idle gear. There is some diff. in the electrical- stator and rotor. Otherwise I don't think there is a diff.
The way the reduction ratios are calculated You don't feel a difference in the top end. You are just having a longer gears.
The only downside of the 4-gear models is that You put more load on the clutch.
