Title: Jet question
Post by gazab44 on 05/23/05 at 03:45:26

Read many times about re-jetting etc, but how do I know what size jet I have in the first place? as my 96 has had 2 previous owners.

No way to know with out draining and pulling the 4 srcrews (That i suggest you replace with allen head stainless) - the '02 was stock - had a 145 - the '95 had 147.5 when I got it - and pull the main jet - take it easy on the jet re-install when you start the treads - push to hard and the tube can unseat and bind - then you may need to pull the slide to get back in proper

That's the gist.  You just drain and pull the bottom of the carb and the jet is in the center.  Replacing the screws with stainless allen heads is definitely a good idea.  It'll make accessing it in the future a snap.  I did it for the top side too.  A flathead screwdriver will remove the jet and then you read the size stamped into the brass.  I dunno about you but I had to use reading glasses.

My '98 was stock with a 145 also.

While we are on this topic................

How do you then decided what size jet to replace it with?  I bought the Krome Werks muffler from Lancer and would like to cover all the bases before I round up a wrench tutor.

I've seen some rule of thumb before that said a higher flow air filter was +1 size , a higher flow exhaust was +1 or +2 jet sizes - so call that about 3 (if you open the air intake a little). Stock these carbs have a 145 main - but they are lean as he77 and from eyeballing the stock '02 it's reasonable with a 150 jet and stock pipe - so if you start there 150 + ( 3 *2.5 )  - I'd say 157.5 or a 155 if you leave the filter/air box alone, would be a good start - then you need check the spark plug - are you going to chop the white spacer down to half and richen the idle mixture as well?

Don't know about white spacer yet..i'm going to probably increase jet, if it's not been done and then take it from there... :)

I had some trouble locating the right allen bolts in a hardware store.  Am I going to find these at the bike shop or does anyone have a better suggestion?  I have no choice but to replace them since I skimped on an impact driver and ended up drilling out the top four.  I decided after that the $35 dollars would be well spent for any future problems.

At least here the sears hardward store by the house has a very fine selection of metric - these are m5 stainless allen head

going to check size of jet tonight at work, when not busy of cause, ;) got no problem changing screws...1000's at work  :)

I find Ace Hardware has a good selection of metric bolts where I am.  Varied assortments.. including the more expensive chrome.  I tend to go with stainless.

Prior to removing the stock carb on my Savage in the search for more performance, I found that by going 1 or 2 sizes larger on the main jet and one size larger on the pilot jet, that this would take care of most bikes with a stock engine and K&N style filter and aftermarket muffler.

It would be awsome if someone placed something on "how to replace the Jet" in the tech section.  There's a lot of us that would like to know how to do this..  I think.  :)

The Savage service manual I have is wrong on the jet sizes. Evidently this is a common problem. I went down to a cylce repair shop looking for jets for my savage. I was looking for a pilot jet size never made. The owner pulled up his microfiche on the savage and said the service manual was wrong. This is froma  guy I totally trust, too. Yeah, it was really ahrd to find a mikuni 47.5 pilot! Also, beware, there are several types of pilot jets out there! Bring yours along with you when you go to buy a new one...

Has anyone changed the pilot jet size, in addition ot the main, with a new air filter or pipe?

If all else fails, you can drill out the stock jetting. I'm anxiously waiting for the arrival of a 188ish and 210 main jet pair to try. Might borrow a good drill and step up the pilot jet that way... I borrowed a program at work the other day for carb calibrating, i need at least a 185 main with my current set-up... So much for fuel economy.  ::) At least I'll be less likely to burn a hole in the piston or fry an exhaust valve. ill miss the flame out the pipe though...

Checked the size of the main jet...it's 130.
I'm running a 96, stock everything...so what do you all suggest ?  :)

If you look at the specs here for a 96 -

http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?board=tech;action=display;num=1098869040

yours is close to a "CA" model that had a #125 but also the pilot, needle, needle jet and such are different

When you go for the inspection - I forgot what is called -
do they do an emssions check? if so your best bet might be to grab another carb from ebay and swap it and back to the other for the inspection

130? Wow.  I guess the European Savages may be even leaner at stock than those in the the US (except maybe California).  Here's a link to J & P Cycles (http://www.jpcycles.com/productgroup.aspx?GID=A989B6DF-970F-46E2-968F-F20D04553D66&search=mikuni%20main%20jet&store=All&page=1) where you can get Mikuni mains for that carb.  If you have a local HD dealer, they may have them too.  Ask for the large round type.  The above post points out a very important possibility though.  If you get smog checks, you may want to be able to revert to stock for the inspections.  Do you also have a smog canister like the California Savages?

Your stock main jet is a #130?  That is downright disgraceful.  We definitely need to protest, march, or otherwise stir the pot!!
On the practical side, what jets do you want?  Main jet...pilot jet...
I have:  Pilot jets:  15, 20, 25, 27.5, 37.5, 40, 45, 50, 52.5, 55
             Main jets: 160, (170), 220, 230, 240, 250, 260, 280, plus a bunch of 300 and 400 series.
**The #170 is the standard large round version, the others are the smaller hex version...all are of the same thread size and all will work in the stock carb.
**The pilot jets may look a little different from the stock but work just fine.  I used all of these types of jets in my stock carb before replacing it with performance units.

was thinking of fitting a 150 main jet only to start with, would that be ok just to change the main jet?  :) the english inspection is called M.O.T.

You should be able to tell pretty quick! - also it looks like your needle may have 3 notches on it and set to the 2nd - if so you could move the keeper and richen it up - have you pulled the slide yet?

Something funky is going on here.  I just saw what appear to be replies to this thread from Slavy and Lancer in two different posts.  I saw some similar weirdness yesterday where a reply didn't match the topic.

It  could be that we are just SPACE CADETS and are no longer able to follow a thought pattern ...in the normal manner.
