Title: Side rails and sissy bar Post by stinger on 05/29/05 at 01:04:55 For anyone who cant afford new S40 side rails, like me, you might want to try this. Cheap, and it really sets the rear fender off. I made my rails out of 1/2 inch mahogany and sanded, stained to a dark rich color, then clear coated them. After drilling the mounting holes, I used chrome washers and bolts to mount them. My bike is a black 02, and I wanted to remove the rear pad and sissy bar, and this was the least expensive and best looking subsitute. For those of you who want to mold your own sissy bar, I went to Tap Plastics and bought a 5 ft 5/8 inch thick solid acrylic rod. Cut off a section and put it into the oven on low heat for a few minutes and it bends into any shape you want. When it has cooled, it is almost indestrutable. Spray painted it chrome, and clear coated it, and it looks pretty cool! I made a wood form to mold the shape I wanted. I bent a practice piece into a U shape and had to use all my strength to break it. It really looks like solid chrome steel and seems to be almost as strong. As soon as I can figure out how to post pics here, Ill send some pics of both projects. Enjoy the summer and ride safe! |
