Title: Rear Disk?
Post by vroom1776 on 06/02/05 at 15:59:27

Anyone fit a rear disk to the Savage, instead of that lousy drum? Considering it...

Only limited knowledge on the savage here...  But I don't know if that would even be possible...

I would love to dump the drum. To get rid of the horrible rear wheel squeak I have found several ways to shut it up for a while I am just sick of the fix for a while mentality. it goes like this you are approaching the stop light ready to cruise up looking cool as heII then SSSSSSCCCRRRRREEEeeeEECCCCHHHHHH!!!!!  >:( >:( >:( :-[ :-[ :-[darn THAT SUCKS, not to mention much better braking. Mine is adjusted where it should be and the pads look almost new and it still sucks. I know most braking is done by the front wheel. If your smart you use both almost all the time! Just to be ready.  8)

You mean that is NORMAL??  I was thinking it had rusted or something.

This is something i can relate to, I have an EBC disc and pads with stainless hose, the disc is 230mm x 6.5mm and locks the back up no problem even with sticky tires.

I'm no wrench, but I'll bet with the proper equipment (i.e. imagination, skills, perseverence, tools) that a rear disc brake could be modified for a Savage ... hey the Sportster has that set up ... maybe an LS could be modded to accept a Sporty rear wheel/brake?

Mine must be defective; it doesn't squeak or squeal.  Hmmm, better look into that...

And before Sluggo says "That's what she said!", I want it noted I saw the opening.  Ummm, that one too.

It is that belt drive that sort of dictates what can be done to the rear wheel.  You have to change the hub to change the brake....need to go out and buy a machine shop.

I don't have a lot of experience but I believe the sportster swap could be done.  It would not doubt take a bit of fabrication and such but I think it is doable.
The overall dimensions of the two bikes are not that much different.

You could fit a Sportster wheel, rotor, pulley in the Savage swing arm. That's the easy part... just install "backwards".

Unless you are a stellar welder, it'll be rough to hang the caliper. Master cylinder mount? Juice brake pedal? Plumbing? Caliper mount?

Which caliper? 1, 2, 4, or 6 piston? Stock or aftermarket? Upgrade the front to match?

Sounds too much like work...

I think with all the HD parts already on my Savage, I'd have been better off starting with a Sportster and adding Suzuki parts...

Yerah, but you would have to start by removing one of the cylinders -- and that would likely unbalance the engine, not to mention leaving a huge hole in the crankcase.

Don't worry about the hole, just slap some duct tape over it and go.

Then run bailing wire over it to hold the tape. ??? ;D 8)

Hey!!! Quit talking about the Buell Blast!!!  ::) I wouldn't have one of those Sportsters with a blocked off hole in the cases if you GAVE it to me...

We had one come in to the shop as a possible trade in, on a 1970s bike...we turned him down.

883 Lowrider... take a kidney belt. It isn't the best of the line, decent, but still a rough rider.

:(Sadly, the travellin' Harley Roadshow did not have the 883L available for a testride ... sat on a few others ... couldn't comfortably reach the forward controls of the 883 Custom, found the 1200 Roadster too top heavy to comfortably pull upright and the Dyna Lowrider waaay too heavy. Oh well ... c'est la vie ... I'm not even considering replacing my Savage anyways ... just wanted to see how the Sportster Low rode is all ...
A couple of my friends tried a few Bikes though ... pal Brian (who owns an '04 800 Intruder) didn't like the Sportster Custom (controls too far forward), but loved the 1200 Roadster. Friend Nadine (who owns a mint '82 CM450) hated the Roadster, but kinda liked the Dyna Lowrider ... though she complained that they both shook too much and said the Roadster seemed clunky ...
The H.D. people (who had travelled with a tractor-trailer full of Bikes from Toronto) were all friendly and very accomodating ... and all seemed to love being here in Newfoundland!
