Title: Speedo & Odomoter Broke Post by Chench53 on 06/22/05 at 18:06:55 Oh my poor Special Ed.... I fueled him up last night, and noted my mileage reading, went right home, maybe rode another 1/2 mile tops. Today I rode to work. It's about a 26 mile round trip ride. On the way home, I feel I'm lugging a bit, look to see my speed and adjust gear for the slow traffic. I was going slow in 2nd, but thought maybe I needed 1st, so I briefly glanced at the speedometer. I see I'm at 0. :-/ <<Gee, I didn't think I was going so slow I was near 0. I guess I need more throttle>> so I roll on a bit, still glancing down, still seeing zero. Roll some more.... still a big fat 0.... Now I realize I must be doing about 25mph.... and that my odometer should read more than it does. ??? I did the math, it died just as I finished my morning commute to work. :( I never look at the speedo then because I'm only doing 20-30mph, always go by feel and sound of the bike, move with traffic. What's this gonna cost me? Remember, I don't do my own wrenching.... :P :'( :'( Thanks for info... Gerry |

Title: Re: Speedo & Odomoter Broke Post by sluggo on 06/22/05 at 18:19:03 i would check the cable first.. unattach it from engine, dont lose the little washer. pull on element, if just a short piece comes out, or comes out without the other end on it, it's broke. then just remove tank and replace cable, not sure of cost. if element feels solid when pulled attach a drill driver to it it that makes the speedo turn then it's not the cable or the speedo but something wrong on engine end, doubtfull. if the element turns and your sure it's not broken then the speed has a problem.. i would put my weekly fuel allowance on a broken cable. |

I put a link to this post in my other post, Bird in my Bike (http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?board=RubberSideDown;action=display;num=1118966034)... because perhaps what you just said relates to what Tom said in that thread about a chirping noise. Maybe the chirping has been the speedo cable? Together, it's odd, very odd.... ??? ??? Gerry |

Title: Re: Speedo & Odomoter Broke Post by defrag on 06/23/05 at 18:11:57 ive pulled the throttle cable outta the tank side before, it sorta just jammed it back in there, i havent exactly been able to ride my bike to test if it works though :-[ |

Title: Re: Speedo & Odomoter Broke Post by dannimal on 06/23/05 at 18:39:48 Seems like if the bird isn't "chirping" anymore, it would be a good bet as Sluggo suggested that the cable became twisted up and snapped within the black outer cable sheilding. It's not hard to fix. Just order the cable and take your time when you do the replacement and it won't be as hard as you may think it is. Just refer to the tank removal section in the tech section and you'll do fine. While you got the tank off as a suggestion, I'd recommend replacing the spark plug if you haven't done so lately as well. It makes a world of diffrence as I found out!!!! ;D By the way, my speedo has always had a slight "chirp" and I know it will just be a matter of time before it busts too. But then again, I never really pay much attention to it (speedo) anyway!! I'm more concerened of what's ahead and around me to look down at it 8) |

Title: Re: Speedo & Odomoter Broke Post by Chench53 on 06/27/05 at 16:52:14 No, I don't do my own wrenching and so Weds I'll ride it into the dealer for him to take a look. I'll keep you all posted. Thanks :D Gerry |

Title: Re: Speedo & Odomoter Broke Post by Reelthing on 06/28/05 at 19:59:15 The cable washer/seal is not sold by suzuki for some odd reason - gotta buy the cable to get the oem one - some folks have used various washers from the hardware strore and such |

If they replace the cable - ask for the old washer/seal - hard little things to come by if you get a leak |

it's a fancy dancy o ring most of the time just remove the starter and that's where it's at. if not just an o ring will, do trial and error the size. just cause it ain't made for a m/c don't mean it won't work. |

Title: Re: Speedo & Odomoter Broke Post by WD on 06/28/05 at 22:54:34 Hardware store o-ring and some gasket goo works better than the stock piece anyway. Motion Pro, one of the larger generic aftermarket cable suppliers, doesn't list the LS650 OR the S40. >:( So make sure you lube the speedo, clutch, and throttle cables. Honda uses the same cables on late model CR50R dirt bikes as on the vintage M50 (Elsinore), the brakes are the same too. Leave it to Suzuki to use "proprietary" cables. There's a cross-over, there's gotta be, but I haven't had time to track it down. Use cable lube, NOT machine oil... -WD |
