I just bought a 2003 Savage today. This bike has no modifications at all. First bike in 35 years. It did not have an owner's manual. One, do you know any place that I can easily obtain one. Second, simple things you all know that I don't--the fuel thingy has four settings. North and South is Fuel (N) and on (S) and the east setting is res, I assume that's reserve, and west is RRI. What is RRI? How large is the standard gas tank and if the res is reserve, how much is in reserve. Does this thing have a gas gauge. What kind of mileage can I expect, not pushing it too hard.

It has 6000 miles on it and seems in great shape, but is there anything I need to do it soon?

Can't help you with the owners manual but you might try E-bay. Also the Clymer's workshop manual would be usefull if you intent to do your own maintenance.

Regarding the fuelc0ck:
Handle forward= reserve, down = normal run position
PRI = prime.

The first 2 require vacuum from the carburator and is only supplying fuel when the engine is running.
PRI = unrestrited flow of fuel.

Fuel capacity is 10.5 liters of which 8.5 liters is available for normal running ( approx 100 miles or 160 Km to be on the safe side.

Ther's NO gas gauge but you have a look through previous posts and find the solutions other members come up with.

Generally, just leave the petc0ck in the ON position. It delivers fuel only when the engine is running (or starting) so it shuts itself off automatically when you turn off your engine. Nothing special to do when starting...just leave it in the ON position all the time.

Prime is used when you run the carb completely dry either by running ON and RES empty or by physically emptying the tank (when removing it). Once you get the bike running on PRI, you can switch back to ON. Don't leave your bike in PRI while parked. This is an unresticted flow by gravity and could flood your engine with fuel (not good).

What folks usually do is run ON completely dry (you run out of gas) to see how far you can go on a tankful. Quickly switch to RES either while riding or pull off the side of the road. Then you will know how many miles you get on a tank. Probably in the 110 - 120 mile range, but it varies. Everytime you gas up, write down your mileage. When you reach 90 or 100 miles it's time to gas up.

My bike gets 52 mpg but it's modded and yours will be different. Best run it to empty in the ON position to see how far you get.

Your dealer can order the owner's manual for $16 or so. That's where I got mine.

I bet RonAyers.com would do better on price.

Thanks to you all for the information. I didn't know to simply leave the pitcock on "on" and that alone was worth the price of the ticket. I now need to convert liters to gallons and I'm there. Thanks folks.
