Title: Something Different
Post by Oklahoma_Mike on 08/17/05 at 08:23:34

Below is a copy of an interesting email I got. 8)

Way off subject, but I think it will cause some interesting discussion.

TO THOSE OF YOU NOT FAMILIAR WITH JOE ARPAIO, HE IS THE MARICOPA ARIZONA
COUNTY SHERIFF. HE KEEPS GETTING ELECTED OVER AND OVER.

THIS IS ONE OF THE REASONS WHY:

Sheriff Joe Arpaio (in Arizona) who created the "tent city jail":
He has jail meals down to 40 cents a serving and charges the inmates for them. he stopped smoking and porno magazines in the jails. Took away their weights. Cut off all but "G" movies. He started chain gangs so the inmates could do free work on county and city projects.
Then he started chain gangs for women so he wouldn't get sued for discrimination. He took away cable TV until he found out there was a federal court order that required cable TV for jails. So he hooked up the cable TV again only let in the Disney channel and the weather channel. When asked why the weather channel he replied, so they will know how hot it's gonna be while they are working on my chain gangs. He cut off coffee since it has zero nutritional value.
When the inmates complained, he told them, "This isn't the Ritz/Carlton. If you don't like it, don't come back."

More on the Arizona Sheriff:
With temperatures being even hotter than usual in Phoenix (116 degrees just set a new record), the Associated Press reports: About 2,000 inmates living in a barbed-wire-surrounded tent encampment at the Maricopa County Jail have been given permission to strip down to their government-issued pink boxer shorts.
On Wednesday, hundreds of men wearing boxers were either curled up on their bunk beds or chatted in the tents, which reached 138 degrees inside the week before.
Many were also swathed in wet, pink towels as sweat collected on their chests and dripped down to their pink socks.
"It feels like we are in a furnace," said James Zanzot, an inmate who has lived in the tents for 1 = years. "It's inhumane."
Joe Arpaio, the tough-guy sheriff who created the tent city and long ago started making his prisoners wear pink, and eat bologna sandwiches, is not one bit sympathetic.
He said Wednesday that he told all of the
inmates: "It's 120 degrees in Iraq and our soldiers are living in tents too, and they have to wear full battle gear, but they didn't commit any crimes, so shut your darned mouths!"
Way to go, Sheriff! If all prisons were like this one there would
be a lot less crime and/or repeat offenders. Criminals should be
punished for their crimes -- not live in luxury until it's time for
their parole, only to go out and commit another crime so they can get back in to live on taxpayers money and enjoy things taxpayers can't afford to have for themselves.

What do you think about that? 8)

I originally got this from a cousin two years ago.

About The Sheriff (http://www.mcso.org/submenu.asp?file=aboutsheriff&page=1)

I looked it up on Snopes.com (http://www.snopes.com/crime/deserts/pink.asp) to see if it was true or only urban legend.  It's apparently true.  What a guy!

Oh I've heard of this guy. He is no joke... sort of anyways. I've read he is deliberately outlandish... there is no such thing as bad publicity.
I wish they had a similar system here in Canada. I don't think even the nicest prison is a great place to be, but it would be nice to see a return on the investment to incarcerate these people... clean and trim highways and ditches and criminals with a sincere desire to stay on the straight and narrow and never go back to prison
.

My 2c.

Yes sir Ive sheltered them and bought them enough meals that it is time for a little return on my investment and not by means of a gun in my face as a way of saying thank you.

I got an E-Mail about the same earlier in the year and didn't know if it was B.S. or not. But by what I see here it is true.
YEAH this guy should run for PRES. for sure he'd win by a landslide and I hope he'd run by an independent party to make it really sink in to the general public that we can do away with the bureaucratic B.S. that our taxes goto.

We have a judge here in NE Ohio that's the same way.  You wouldn't believe some of the stuff he's made people do as recompense for breaking the law...Making a slum lord walk back and forth infront of one of his buildings wearing a sign that says he's a slum lord, or something like that I can't remember exactly.

I wonder how many more like that we got around here?

Why you think he is a nut?

Because I don't believe all the hype that he generates about himself. And believe me, there's a whole lot of that!

Sure, it sounds good that he's not coddling criminals (and I share his philosophy on that), but at what cost?

Check out what some citizens of Maricopa County have to say about him, including some of his former and current employees:  http://www.arpaio.com/joe_arpaio_topten.htm

In short, he's a granstanding publicity hog more interested in getting face time on TV than making any real, long-lasting changes in his corner of the criminal justice system.

Two sides (at least) to every story, people!

Thanks for that link, Tammi.  This was interesting: "As an example, Arpaio spent over $10,000 in tax payer money to have Arizona State University study recidivism in his jail system. ASU found that there was no change in the rate at which inmates returned to the jail."  I was wondering about that.

He sounds like a Bernie Kerik/Rudy Giuliani type.  These guys seem okay, as long as the only information you get about them is from them. ::)

I don't like people who waste time talking tough. It's like they think we're too stupid to figure out if they're any good at their jobs unless they spend every waking moment singing their own praises and shouting "Fear me!" Yeah, yeah, whatever. Now STFU and do some actual work.

Sounds like a lot of Political Bull $hit to me. I don’t believe people would keep reelecting a sheriff that is that much of a screw-up.  :-/ well maybe but I dout it.

Remember there were people that said Jesus was the devil :o!! If someone can be that delusional then anything is possible. :P

I really like this part.  ;)
"Support us in our quest to get rid of Joe Arpaio by making a donation our Arpaio.Com PAC (Political Action Committee). Our success depends upon your support!"

To quote savage Rob that is raising the BS Flag :-/

but I don't live there. I would vote him in here though!! 8)

I live in Phx and still don't know what to say about the man. You can here people put him on a piedestal and in the same moment You can hear somebody wants him in the jail. The local trash newspaper New Times has a very strong campaign against him.
Without knowing this person I have friends of mine that know him personally and according everybody He is absolutely arogant. I hear he is pretty corrupt too. All of this is about his personality and honestly I don't think to merry him , so I don't care how friendly of a guy is he. What I care is that he is doing what he is hired to do. And in this area and in any drug and crime infested area of the country there is no other way. Either You act tough either You bend over.
This is only my oppinion of course.

First, I'll admit I know nothing about that neck o' the woods.  However I also know that, like judges, sheriffs are appointed instead of elected in some places.  I've always considered myself lucky to be a Texan and we elect 'em here... good, bad or otherwise.  It's just that some folks do it differently.

And more on that idot when Newt Gingrich was questioned about the efforts in the wake of Katrina

Even fellow Republicans were criticizing Bush and his administration for the sluggish relief effort. "I think it puts into question all of the Homeland Security and Northern Command planning for the last four years, because if we can't respond faster than this to an event we saw coming across the Gulf for days, then why do we think we're prepared to respond to a nuclear or biological attack?" said former House Speaker Newt Gingrich.

I personally did not hear that quote but darn! that has got to be the first time I have to agree with Newt.
