Title: Filling gas tank
Post by 650-rider on 08/22/05 at 07:45:14

I have a rookie question - when you fill the gas tank, should the bike be on the side stand, or standing up straight?  If you fill the bike while on the side stand, then it is too full when you stand the bike up.  So it might leak out unless the filler cap is sealed.  Thanks for your insight into this.

It would be a little difficult to fill you bike up with it standing straight up, unless you alway have two people with you.

And, if you fill it up while on the kick stand you will put less in than you would standing straight up.  The only time I had a bike leak gas out of the gas cap was when I filled the bike up and it was set up to stand straight up on it's kick stand.

A general tip:  Don't fill the tank all the way to the lip, this will cause gas to leak out of the gas cap.

And I've noticed spillage unless I do the following:

Fill up while on the sidestand.
Stand bike straight.
Replace cap.

If I replace the cap while it's still on the sidestand immediately after filling it, occasionally it leaks.

yea i just dont fill it all the way up but mine leaks too. My buddy said i should prolly get a new cap. any thoughts on that?

What I do is fill it on the stand upto the bottom of the metal tube or close - and before I put the cap back on - slosh it back and forth a couple of times. The '95 will still leak at times if I hard right leaving the station - may need a new gasket myself.

I also only fill up when its on the stand.....no reason, its just easier that way  :)

That's how I do it as well. Unless I want to run in and grab a gatorade.

while gasing up the wing in ohio once, they would not turn pump on untill rider AND passenger both dismounted. mabey just that stations rules, i donno, mabey state regs. after that we both just got off at gas stops, never tested it again. bill aka diesel.

Sounds like we are in effect doing the same thing - bet an air pocket is forming on the left that gets burp'd outa there - either before - no leak or after - leak - the gas cap goes on

That's kinda what I figured.  I just haven't really made it a priority to assess it any further.

The two petrol stations I use both have forecourt attendants to serve fuel (v unusual), I sit on the bike and get off to pay, no real reason.
On my visits to South Africa I have found all petrol stations have forecourt attendants and tipping is normal practice.

...except in jersey where state law (unless it's changed) says that you can't pump your own gas, which i think is BS, but they don't check your fluids like back in the day...

Oregon is like that, too.  You can't pump your own gas, but the attendant doesn't have to stand there and hold the handle.  Not sure how that helps.  I passed through pretty quickly last year, so I didn't bother to ask about it.

Wow.  I'd honestly be surprised to find a place in Texas where you didn't have to pump your own.

Speaking of filling up.  Is there a gas cap that has a gauge on it that fits the Savage?

This works for me, too.  I'd also like to add that I put in just enough gas such that the fuel level barely kisses the bottom filler tube in the tank.

My 05 manual says on the kickstand and no higher than the bottom of the metal tube, and I've found out it is for a reason!

If I try to squeeze in even a hair over the bottom of that tube, I get a thin slow moving 'yellow snake' out of the cap down the back of my tank.... :o

It's gone up in Dallas now too.  I managed to get it at $2.78 yesterday at the grocery store's gas island using the discount I got for shopping at the store.  Otherwise it would've been $2.84.  Elsewhere in my area, I've seen it at around $2.90 - $2.95 for regular (87 octane) and $3.15 for premium (93 octane).

Post by DavidV on 09/02/05 at 08:42:26

The worst I've seen in MD has been $3.49 for regular.  Most places are still at $3.00 to $3.25.

I spoke to two gas station owners yesterday.  One ran an independant station, the other had a corporate station.  Both of them agreed that standard markup is ten cents per gallon.  They have to pay the distributor for the whole load when the gas is delivered.  They also said they'd never seen a sixty-cent per gallon rise in price before, and they have no idea where the top price might be.

Our Gasoline (petrol for you English, benzina for you Italians ;)) went up another $0.189Cdn/litre last night to $1.34Cdn/litre which is equivalent to $4.30USD per US gallon ... as long as it stays this high, no more pleasure Riding for me ... I'll commute on the Bike as long as the weather holds out ...  :(

I don't know Susan, I'm 5'4" and I fill up sitting on the bike.  I like to choose places where I can stick the card in the pump and I never leave the bike...never even put the side stand down.
