Title: Gas Mileage
Post by Polar Pilot on 08/26/05 at 06:26:31

During a run this summer between Jasper Alberta and the Columbia Ice Fields we had to cover about 115 miles with no gas stations.
My buddy, Power Ranger, was riding his Savage and we were concerned about the distance to be covered.
Because we were running in the mountains and the joy of riding on a twisting highway was the wonderful views, none of us had any trouble dropping back to about 50 mph.
Much to our astonishment Power Ranger's fuel consumption went from about 60 MPG to just about 90 MPG.  :o
Cruising is not about high speeds and the 2 hours between the fuel stops convinced us that while cranking can be fun - laughing at how little gasoline we used can even make the experience better!
Still keeping the rubber side down on this new site ;D

I originally posted this back in July on another thread ... similar Riding conditions to those posted by fellow Kanucklehead Polar Pilot;

Quote:
Guys (n' gals) ... I don't believe it ... my latest milage figures ... no way they can be this good??
Total distance Rode on Saturday's (July 9th) group ride = 317km (198mi) @ 7.743 litres (2.045 US gallons) fuel consumed. Works out to an astonishing 96mpg!! No way ... my old Rebel couldn't get that ...
Riding was mostly on a rural costal 2-lane at 50-60kph (30-40mph) with a brief stint during the return leg on a secondary highway at 80kph (50mph) ... easy throttle & braking, laid-back riding ... mostly 2nd, 3rd & 4th gear.
Gotta say, this kinda gas milage seems unbelievable for a 650cc Bike??

So it seems that under certain conditions, the LS650 is capable of incredible fuel milage!!

I have never been so lucky.
About a week ago I and my wife on 2 Savages went from Phoenix to Zion Nat. Park- Utah. The distance was about 840 mi. round trip. We traveled 1 day there, staied 1 day and after the second day sight seeng we came back at night. The speed varied between 60 to about 80mph. Her bike has stock modified Mikuni and Screeming eagle with baffle. My bike fas Qwik Silver , some original fishtail HD exhaust with no buffle, and no air box door. The gas milage varied between slightly above 40 to slightly above 50 mpg and definitely the speed was the factor. I have to admit, that her bike always had better gas milage and the lower the speed, the bigger the diff. I think the reason is that I don't have enough backpressure and the bike is just wasting gas at low RPM. BUT IT IS FUN ! When We traveled at night and I was in front, my wife told me the exhaust looked like a welding torch with about 1' flame on the tip. Her's was just glowing red inside.

My buddy and I are making a trip up to the Thousand Island region tomorrow.  Taking all the back roads and should be a 45-50 mph type trip.  I'll let you all know on the gas milage.

Well, did a nice little Ride with some pals today ... Paradise to Bay Bulls via Mount Pearl & the Goulds, across Witless Bay Line (awesome road thru virgin wilderness!) to the TCH (Trans Canada Hiway) ... TCH to Holyrood & back to St. John's via the Conception Bay South ... total 128 kms (79.54 mi) ... used 4.71 litres (1.24 US gallons) of fuel ... works out to 64 mpg US.

I've been driving around the city.  I don't push it too hard, but occasionally I goose the throttle and for the last three tanks of gas, I've been getting 48-49 mpg.  Not so bad, but I find my three mile trip back to home from work turns into a 10-15 mile trip.  I guess my bike wanders.

I just bought my Savage in June and have put about 1500 miles on her so far. But I'm only averaging 40.6 mpg. I ride 15 miles to work on city streets and also a stretch of 60 mph highway. How are you guys getting the better mileage? I've been shifting early (?) for the better low end sound but that might be the problem also. Any ideas or tips? Boy is this one fun machine, my old Norton was faster but this is definately a better ride.

Commuted to work and back on the Savage for a few days this week ... cooler mornings meant choke out a bit longer and with the stop n' go traffic (c/w Cager Idiots ...) = 2.6 litres for 60km ... a bit of math puts that at approx. 54mi per U.S. gallon
