Title: Suzuki brake pad recall.....
Post by threezukes on 09/10/05 at 03:56:43

Today after work I got a letter from the dealer saying that my front brake pads may be on recall,  so I took it to the dealer and they actually changed everything for free .  WooHoo!!...sorry forgot to ask why they were recalled though, but they did say that it was for Suzuki bikes and not just Savages.

Any recalls somewhere else?

Thanks!

Interesting, I wonder how far back the recall goes. I bought my '02 used with only 2K miles on it and the front shoes were already worn down to 1/8 an inch. Seemed like excessive wear but nobody at the dealer would give me a straight answer. Doesn't really matter anyways, the old shoes have been trashed long ago. Ride Safe

My '01 still had the original pads on it - until today.  They lasted about 3900 miles (bike had 937 on it when I got  it).  Hopefully, the new ones will last a little longer.

I bought mine with 1640 miles on it and the pads were getting close to needing to be replaced, so I changed 'em.  The shoes on the rear seem fine though.

If  anyone finds out about the year of the recall please post it . TY

The reason for the Savage pads not to last is that the caliper is so narrow, and there is no place for "meat" on the pads. There are 3 different sizes brake pads that differ only by the thickness of the brake material. The only one that fit are the one with the list material. When You compare them with some other brake pads, brand new Savage pads look like they are 1/2 worn down.  The fact that there is only one small disk in front doesn't help too.

I've been doing Google searches for a few hours learning what I could about brakes. This is what I learned: If you have a bike with dual discs & 6-8 pistons, you can buy the BEST brake pads for it. (HH rated) If you have ONE disc & ONE piston, your only available choices are the lower rated pads. Makes NO sense to me, at least from a non-marketing perspective.  I did find one amazing revelation: Galfer actually makes a braided stainless steel brake liner for OUR bike! Not a generic "one-size fits some" or adapter kit outfit. I posted a brake pad rating thing on the tech section for your info. You all have a great week.  :)

I guess maybe the recall is only for here in Japan.

My Mate in the next but one village does custom braided stainless brake lines to fit whatever you want.

Glad to help, Deb. If I ever run across some HH rated pads that fit our bikes I'll post the source here.  :)

after reading here about front brake pad life on this board, i took a peek at mine, GAD ZOOKS, could barely see ANY meat on inside pad! 2900 mi. i do use front brake very heavely, after all, front brake does 'bout 70 or80% of breaking, so not wanting to wait 2 weeks(and lose some of the best riddin weather of the year) for mail order, i went to my local steeler(HOW TRUE) today. was ripped for over 32 bucks for lowest grade EBC pads. cycle mag adds has them for 17 or 18 bucks + ship. it's no wonder there is such a brisk mail order business in parts.

Well after all of this talk about the LS' front brake pads, at the local "Toys 4 Tots" Run yesterday, had an aquaintence who happens to be a crack m/c mechanic look at mine ... he said that I'd better replace 'em before next season, as they were just about gone!! And that's with only 5,000km on 'em and I'm not heavy on the brakes (But I have noticed lately that my front brake lever feels "hard" when pulled...)!!
It appears that the stock OEM pads for the Savage are crap ... any better aftermarket ones out there that anyone can recommend?

Can anybody pleeese tell me the part number for Savage brake pads and shoes? ???
They're not in the current official Suzuki catalogue and nobody knows anything about them here in Italy. :'(
AND
I'm without a user's manual, any chance to download one from anywhere on the web? ::)

Thanks

Maurizio

Here are some aftermarket part numbers for LS650 Brake Pads and their Canadian price equivalents;

SBS #SBS581HF = #34.99Cdn (these are ceramic pads)

EBC #FA106 (also MTV 361-1065) = $33.99Cdn.

MBS #MBS581 = $19.99Cdn

Just bought the SBS ceramic pads myself ... they are made in Sweden and supposed to be very good ... haven't yet installed 'em though ...

Title: Re: Suzuki brake pad recall.....
Post by Reelthing on 10/06/05 at 05:32:48

I replaced the EBC organic pads after about 3-4k miles and put on the SBS ceramics about that many miles ago - Haven't pulled to have a look but from the outside I can still see quite a bit of line on the pads - so I'm either using the brake less or the SBS hold up much longer and I'm not seeing much wear on the rotor - some for sure at 21k miles - they seem to stop at least as well as the EBCs - neither work as well as the '02 - but it still doesn't have any miles on it.

Perry let was know if can feel any stopping difference between the SBS and Suz pads

Will do Reelthing ... but it's not likely that the new pads will be installed 'til Spring ... Ridin' weather's pretty much turned off for the season here in eastern Nfld. ... so sadly, over the next week or so my LS will be going into her annual Winter hibernation ... :'(

Kropatchek, yes, please, I'd appreciate that link, even if it is in German - I can always get somebody to help me wade through the difficult bits

Guys from the States, does this mean there is NO website in English where one can download a user's manual?

All, many thanks for the brake pad number for the front disc, now, for the drum shoes...

As for me providing info, I'm an enthusiast in British sports cars, and can provide tips tricks and lots of help for touring Europe. ;)
...I understand my offer is irresistible 8) but one helps with what he's got.

I haven't seen one.  Most folks that don't have one get one from their dealer for about $15, I think.  For maintenance, there is the Clymer's manual and the factory service manual.  The Clymer's is pretty good and quite a bit cheaper than the factory manual but the factory manual is better IMO.

Dang I didn't know you put them anyway that early - does it always get bitter cold by Nov 1st? or is that insurance policy driven?

Well Reelthing ... some guys who have heated garages on the front of their houses and a nice paved drive right up to the garage, leave their Bikes on a battery tender and take 'em out once and awhile during winter. I don't have that luxury ... only have an un-heated 8ft x 14ft shed out back of my house ... so with the onset of colder/wetter weather this time of the year, it's just as well I put her in hibernation ... our Winters aren't as bitter cold as some think ... mostly hovering around the freezing mark from Dec. to March with sloppy, wet conditions. But we've have had very cold winter's with a lot of snow and very mild winters with hardly any ... out here in the North Atlantic, winter is like a box of chocolates ... you never know what you're gonna get!

Hi Reelthing; come up here and hang around the Canadian border in late October and early November, and you will see why us northerner's are thinking about winter storage.
Yep, we can have a few rare days of what we call "Indian Summer" here in October & Novenber, and we have our heavy leathers and thermals. We live for these few days of the year's "last loveliest smile" as autunm turns to winter.
But by the same token we get heavy clouds, icy rain, and dense fogs. The first spits of snow will arrive soon, and by December and January we are talking about snowfall measured in feet not inches. Oh yes and also temps. below zero with wind chills off the charts. We can't even stay warm in our cages wearing a parka with the heater going full blast! :o
So enjoy your endless summer down there. Up here summer is usually over before it starts.  :-/

PS; our climate does save wear & tear on those break pads though!  ;D

I wouldn't call it endless summer but the temperature swings back and forth enough that you don't have a real storage season.

No argument.  I am a native Texan and like living in Texas, though I must admit to a fondness for the Pacific Northwest.

According to dealer, no recall on 2002 Savage.

Too bad on the no recalls in the USA. I just pulled my pads to check them and clean things up after 5000 miles. One pad is worn out completely. The other actually has quite a bit of wear left. After I get a new set of pads, I'm going to see if I can figure out why the wear was so uneven.

Even so, 5,000 miles isn't a whole lot of distance.
