Title: 75 mph in 2nd gear!
Post by torque on 10/04/05 at 10:42:10

My dad just bought a 2006 1200 sportster custom, with sunglow yellow paint. And holly crap its fast!! 80ft lbs of torque!it never stops pulling in any gear,no matter how fast your going.u can be going 90 mph and twist the throttle and it still wants too lift the front wheel! plus it sounds bad a$$.its funny because if u double the savages cc's it would be 1300cc and would have 60hp ,the sportster has 70 hp,and 1200cc.thank god for pushrods!! i took the 883R for test drive, and it still has more power than the savage in any rpm, both sportsters have self cancelling turn signals, which is pretty cool.it has a trip meter too.the engine is rubber mounted,so its a lot more comfortable than the 70's models!!! matter of fact when your crusing ,u cant feel any vibrations, but when u come to a stop the whole bike shakes, just enough to get  everyones attention.then when u take off theres that signature harley deep deep RUMBLE.

all in all its a KILLER bike. 8)

Congrats! The Sportys are great lookin' Bikes ... along with the new Dyna "Street Bob" and the Softail Standard ... hey I know H.D. is a "dirty word" to some, but lets be honest, they are the "benchmark" when it comes to Cruiser styling! 8)

i got nothing against the bikes, it's the posers that buy them that i got a problem with.  ;D

I believe I can match that with my Savage.

Yup ... will admit there's plenty of RUB's Ridin Harley's ... even all the way out here in the North Atlantic ... but darn, the HDMC make some sweet lookin' Bikes ... most of the major Asian manufacturers have looked to H.D. for styling inspiration for their Cruisers ... though lately, some of the Far East Builders have come out with some unique looks all of their own ... Yami's beautiful Road Star Warrior comes to mind ... now only if Suzi's "Next Generation" 650cc Cruiser could be a V-twin RSW knock-off that would come in at under 400lbs dry ... hmmm ... that's a topic for another Thread!!

LOL!  ;D

Anyway if the Savage exists, HD has a bit of honour, IMO!

no posers here  ;) it was kinda funny the salesman said that it is very rare to get over 1,000 miles a year on any motorcycle,we have had yours for three days and put on 300 miles! my dad told the salesman he was full o sh!t,it was pretty funny ;D

I just checked the Statistical Abstract of the United States for a few honest motorcycle accident statistics.  Motorcycles only average 1,854 miles per year.  Due to my 4 mile one way commute I only put on 5,000 miles this past year.   A LOT of motorcycle owners are not riding enough miles to maintain proficiency.

paladin,  that means you work 625 days a year!  ;)

Why the heck do people buy motorcycles if they aren't going to ride them?

That is if you assume he ONLY uses it for his work commute and never rides it anywhere else.

1000 miles ayear???!!!!  I've put a thou on my bike in less than 2 months!  In a normal riding year here in the midwest (feb- nov) I easily put 5-6 thousand a year on my bike(s)

now who's copying who here.  that looks an awful lot like a savage, a v twin instead of a single.   i bet it's got plastic chrome signals. that tail light looks identical, check out those frame rails. that muffler even looks like a propane tank..  how much did he spend for his savage on steroids.  ;D

No offense, but how's Harley reliability doing these days?  Are the new bikes any better?

For a while I'd heard the new evo engines were pretty reliable,  but recently I've heard jsu thte opposite... all anecdotal, so who knows?  :P

Well the sportster was introduced in 1957 and the savage in 1986,so there u go.

trully side by side there no similarities, the savage is a lot smaller in length and height, and the savage fork is raked a whole lot more, the tail light is completely differant it shines the light up at the LP where as the savage has a whole differant lp light.and the sportster engine is rubber mounted.

as for reliability its better than ever, its not like the amf"harleys" at all ,u can pull up to a gas station and say fill up gas,and check the oil .instead of fill up the oil and check the gas

harley reliability is at par with or exceeding all the other motorcycle manufactures, and the craftsmanship is the best.no stupid stamped gas tanks!!   imo. 8)

gotta agree with torque on stamped gas tanks... HD does a great job with tanks.  I hate tank seams, espescially the ones on my bikes!  Japan needs to figure out how to hide them better, or be willing to do it on the cheaper models, e.g. Ymaha R* and Honda VTX 1800, no tank seams.  V* 1100 & VTX 1300, tanks seams.  >:(

Fuel injection is likely to be part of the reason...

Lets see if I take my CAR engine and chop off two cylinders making it a parallel twin with 900cc displacement it would make the same horsepower as the sportster engine at only 6000rpm.

the sportster has a single carb, its not EFI. ::)sportster 79ftlbs@3000rpm.

u can buy a sport bike with 600cc and 100 hp,a car engine is totally irrellevant,a "900cc"car engine would weigh around 400lbs,say the rest of the bike weighs 300lbs(probably more),thats a 700lb bike with the same power, the sportster weighs 500lbs.

again common sense isnt so common,i guess!
