Title: Savage/S40 Shock Setting Help Post by LS650RJM on 10/05/05 at 13:02:58 Sorry if not new! Anyone willing to share their experience setting the rear shock on a LS650 (Savage), S40 or S50? Detailed instructions would be appreciated. I have the Clymer book and it seems to leave some details out. For instance, do the shocks have to be decompressed and tricks for doing it if needed. Also, the notches for the setting are not visible. Are the changes made by feel only? All suggestions and help appreciated. Thanks!!! ??? |

Go a notch or two back and forth and watch the bottom of the shock while you do it. You'll see pretty quickly which notch you're in. It moves about a quarter-inch with each notch. You don't have to jack the bike up. Make sure both shocks are set the same, of course... |

Title: Re: Savage/S40 Shock Setting Help Post by bentwheel on 10/05/05 at 13:16:31 If you look at the lower chrome cover of the shock you will see a hole. Put an allen key in there ( around 5mm) and with a bit of force pull the key forward or backwards. This will move the setting stiffer or softer. You will know by the sound it makes when it sits at the next setting. When you change settings (there are 5) watch the shock at the lower cover to see if it rises or falls. If it falls you are getting softer. Adjust both shocks to the same setting. If you chose the softest setting inspect the edge of your tire to make sure it is not contacting the fender bolts. |

I did a quick search on shock adjust turned up the following: Rear shock adjustment (http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?board=RubberSideDown;action=display;num=1116292703) I think it covers the discussion pretty well. For me, it was by feel. The search facility works pretty well. Just be sure to set the number of days to search back to something larger than the default of 7. That's usually worthless. |
