Post by Jim_R on 10/18/05 at 19:41:31

I concur.  Took the ugly thing off and the bike looks like a sportster in one fell swoop.  still have to get rid of those ugly chrome thingies on the fender!

I think my girlfriend would break up with me, she simply loves riding on my bike with me and couldn't do without a sissybar (as I accelerate like a maniac  ;D 8)), so although it doesn't look good, it stays on!

I like the look with it removed but I've become accustomed to having my ammo box trunk mounted on the luggage rack and I strap other stuff to it for my commutes to/from work and elsewhere.  It looks better gone but it's just useful to me.

I took the pad off and took a grinder to the pad mounts.  I think it looks better with just the bar and no pad.

My 2004 didn't have one when I got it. The bike had been 'rear ended' in an accident and the sissy bar was gone.

I replaced the damaged side rails and got a replacement sissy bar/pad off eBay .. but when I installed the side rails I didn't realise that I needed to put the sissy bar on at the same time (not afterward)  ... but it is nice not to have it because now I can bungee large things on to the passenger seat and let it hang off the back ... something I couldn't do if the sissy bar was there.

The rear end of the fender rail bolts to the sissy bar which bolts to the fender.  If you remove just the sissy bar and keep the rails you need to cut the bar to retain the rear rail mounts.  (unless you want the rear ends of the fender rails to be not fastened down.)

The rear turn signals mount to the fender rails, with the wire under the rail.  If you remove the sissy bar and fender rails you need to replace/relocate the rear turn signals and wiring.

My LeatherLyke saddlebags mount to studs that mount to the fender rails thus requiring the sissybar for support.  I need the bags.

I've always felt that the short sissybar was silly looking -- either remove or replace with an 18" tall sissy bar.

Agreed.  I may try to make a taller sissybar myself.

Life sucks, eh?  Should we go for form or function?  I look at pontiac solstice's because of their looks but I buy montana's because of their functionality.  Oh, to be young and single again!

Its not hard to just take out the bolts that are holding it in place, but i guess the easiest way would be a plazma cutter ;D

I don't think so .. at least not on my bike ... the bolt that attaches the back end of the side rail and one half of the sissybar goes thru the same hole.

Has anyone mounted your stock signal to the rear fender without the chrome fender brackets, If so how, I just bought new clear lens and don't want to change yet.

The guy who had my bike before me did that, but dumb ass drilled an extra hole for the wires and then used some kind of silicone to hold the turn signals in..

Looks like crap, I am ripping all of that out and replacing the stock with small aluminum LED's and using a very large chrome washer to cover the extra hole,...  unless I put the rails on, have to see the look when they get here ::

I wonder why the guy drilled another hole when there are 14,000 already.  Those rails are the ugliest thing about the whole bike...can't wait to get them off and get some tiny bullet signal lights on there...

I'm sorta looking for a good sissybar for my '06 S40.

You really think pics are that important?  I think the written word is a lot more fun, although pics do have their place...

I'd like pics!  I'm such a newbie when it comes to modifying my bike, it would definitely help to see what the masters have done!

'Anyone have trouble fitting saddlebags onto the Savage?  I bought moto-pak 90s http://www.motopakluggage.com/gts90.html for  touring next spring and, unless I can figure out how to move the back turn signals, I'll be having them hit the backs of my knees the whole trip.

here is 2 pics of my sissybarless bike

I think it looks sportier and I have no need for a sissybar.  It would be kewl if u could convert it into a drivers backrest tho.  Torque and I have been pondering the idea for a bit.  It would reduce monkey butt syndrome a lot.

Someone here had a chromed low-profile "handle" (for lack of a better word ...) fabricated to replace the stock sissy bar & pad ... looked real good ... I believe there was a discussion on here about it (with pics) and several members were inquiring about the piece ... it was a nice finished piece of work ... wouldn't mind something like that myself ...

Know that one. Home made in Germany, from brass and chromed.
Brass can be reworked more easy than steel I think.

I don't remember how far back that post is but I really would like to get one like it, it just hugged the profile and was good looking. Susan do you remember the discussion?

I found it, on page 63 under the topic sissybar removal, the reply by Gitarzan with the second picture.
I'm sure someone is smart enough to move this forward so you all can see it but I'm not.
