Title: 140/80-15 tires replacement??
Post by jbrough7 on 10/23/05 at 18:33:44

I'm trying to find a rear tire on ebay  for my savage but the size is pretty rare.  Will something else fit?  There are lots of 140/90-15's out there or will something else do?  Thanks a lot, guys and gals in the suzuki clan.

On my 1993 the 140/90 fits without any problem.

I have one on mine but it initially caused some rubbing on the left side of the tire with the bolts holding the side chrome and saddlebag supports on.  Raising the shocks to their highest setting reduced it and removing the saddlebag supports stopped it.  I also replaced the bolts with mushroom-head allen bolts to increase the space.  Since I've replaced my shocks with longer ones, there is no issue.  It all depends on whether you use the saddlebag supports and the weight on the shocks, I'd guess.

Thanks for the help, guys.  I wonder if my big fat rear end is enough to make the new tire rub??

200 lbs made mine rub.

I have a 140/90 15  tire and it required several modifications  to fit. One of them is having to ride on the stiffest shock setting which I don't like. Others have no issues with the higher tire, so I think it depends on which brand of tire you end up buying. I replaced a similar sized Metzler which has a flat profile yet a smaller tread area than the Dunlop I installed which had a tread block that molded into the sidewall and had a round profile. Similar sized tires, but different build characteristics leads to a real conundrum when opting for non recommended tires.

Mine is the Dunlop 491 Elite II.

Dunlop k-555 is a good replacement, made for the Honda PC800, as lots of tread depth and made to carry the extra weight of the Pacific Coast sport tourer. It is the correct size so doesn't rub but is a little taller I think. Max

The k-555 is going to be my next tire. In the 140/80 size the only other I know of is the Metzler ME880 and I feel they are overpriced.

Kenda makes a 140/80 if you're interested in 20 year old technology...I think they'll even make it specially out of round to fit your rim!! ;D

I've learned that if you want a whitewall, be prepared for a long wait. :-[ Only Maxxis makes one that fits & I ordered it Oct 17. It comes in thursday, or so they say. After that I'll put on my Harley FLT pipe & finish the seat & if I can figure out my camera's software I'll have pics in November. The Maxxis probably isn't as grippy as the Metzler or Avon Venom but I had to have the whitewall.
