can they bend over time?
i've had to stomp on mine a few times when going from nuetral to 1st while at a stop.
should the rubberized end piece be parrallel to the ground when bike is level or is this a preference issue?

Sometimes mine gets stuck in neutral at a stop. Sometimes I'll fan the clutch lever until it pops into first but what works for me best is just a slow roll, pushing off with my foot with the clutch in & it always catches first doing that.

There is a linkage rod underneath about 5 or 6 inches long that you've probably bent stomping on it while not moving. I did that too. It's a fairly cheap part available at RonAyers, BikeBandit or your local dealership. I bought a spare just in case but only downshifting while moving cures it. If you made an unexpectedly fast stop and have to downshift afterward, feather the clutch to engage the current gear and then downshift... lather/rinse/repeat until in first.

there looks to be a pair of lock nuts and a threaded section on this rod ? can it be adjusted ?

yeah you sometimes have to fiddle with the clutch to down shift into first

but you should never have to bang it or stomp it ...it's like a woman you gotta finesse it to get it to do what you want ( or need!!! )

lengthen the rod adjustment to go into 1st easier ?
in tiny increments so as not to screw up other gears ?

often as i start the savage with clutch in and in 1st the bike seems to want to creep foreward . symptom of the same problem or what ?

That sounds like the clutch isn't fully disengaged.

Lengthening the shift rod moves the position of the shift lever. Sounds like your clutch cable needs to be adjusted.

It definitely needs a clutch. cable is adjusted properly, and it really slips when I WOT.

Mine bent also. Then it snapped. I replaced it with a rod I made that was about as long. Looking inside the rod that snapped, you could clearly see bubbles in the steel. High qualty stuff...
