Title: Starter motor
Post by Maurizio Pescatori on 11/24/05 at 01:01:18

Cinsidering Savages here in Italy are all 18-20 years old by now... (they were only sold 1986-1988) I have come across a common problem; the starter motor is beginning to throw tantrums.
One symptom is that it has the tendency to disengare-reengage while starting.
Another symptom is that there may often be a loud clang when switching the engine off, like I touched the start switch rather than the kill switch by mistake (even when I switch off with the ignition key.
So, question:
Are DR enduro starter motors compatible to the LS650 engine block?
If so, would a starter motor from a DR750-800 be a preferrable option, as it packs more punch (bigger piston to move)
Ideas?  ???

Maurizio

It sounds like your starting gear is missing some teeth. Open up the LH engine cover and have a look, there's no other way to investigate.

Also make sure that the decompression solenoid is adjusted properly. The sound when switching off might be that the piston is driven backwards on the last compression stroke. Raise the idle RPM to at least 1100RPM.

For the early Savages ('86-'90) there is an electronic schematic available ( from me, courtesy Gerd Honnacker) that you can make and which will energize the decompression solenoid when switching OFF the engine.

Let us know what you find.

Here was one of the previous threads related to this topic, though there have been at least one or two others.
