Title: Anyone replace sissy bar with grab handle? Post by Steve530 on 12/14/05 at 15:43:44 Has anyone replaced the sissy bar (with the small backrest) with a grab handle? Looks like a piece of square chromed tubing would do the trick. Is this a stock part or something that you have to have made? Steve |

Title: Re: Anyone replace sissy bar with grab handle? Post by Ed_L. on 12/14/05 at 15:58:40 I'm looking for a length of square aluminium stock to bend into a grab bar, polish it up and it will look good. |

Title: Re: Anyone replace sissy bar with grab handle? Post by Steve530 on 12/14/05 at 16:33:01 The aqua painted bike on the gallery pic listed as Alang1.jpg has this replacement. Looks pretty good to me. I never plan to ride 2 up, but I'd like to be able to mod it so I can swap it back to stock. Steve |

Title: Re: Anyone replace sissy bar with grab handle? Post by Max_Morley on 12/14/05 at 17:19:55 On my 96 LS650 the sissy bar is solid bar stock, not tubing. It is easy to cut it off just above the fender height and have a piece of the side cut to cross over the stubs and welded or even bolted through the stubs to threads trapped in the cross piece with chrome fasterners. I essentially done this to mine to mount the brackets for a package rack that my GIVI trunk quick attaches to. Package rack came from a salvage yard of unknown origin. I did have a Honda trail 90 one on at one time. It worked OK also. I saved the hoop and just used some 1/2 x 3/4 flat stock I had in the bin as I welded mine on and but drilled and tapped it for some screws down through the rack to the crosspiece. Front of the rack is supported on the original runner tabs the passenger pillion sat on. I can send pics if you want after I get back from the weekend.. max |

Title: Re: Anyone replace sissy bar with grab handle? Post by chriss on 12/15/05 at 02:52:17 I took my stock sissy bar to a welding shop and they cut it off just below the top of the seat and welded a new curved piece on and it looks really cool and only cost me $25, this winter im having it chromed, looks just like a grab handle. ill try and post some pics. |

Title: Re: Anyone replace sissy bar with grab handle? Post by Hammy211 on 12/15/05 at 03:12:00 I took my whole thing off as well as the rails below. I really like the look and think it fits better the character of the Savage. Replaced the blinkers with some off a Honda 929. There are two holes on each side. Rather than trying to remove them I am going to fabricate some saddlebag brackets that will fit in them one of these days. That seems like a pretty good deal for 25 bucks. I'm always afraid to go into machine shops in fear of what I might get quoted. I needed something large diameter threaded once. First two shops I checked quoted me $90. Didn't have that so on my way back the next day I happened to drive by another so I checked there. They did it for $20! I was happy for that but also pretty pissed. I just don't know what any of that stuff should cost but at least I know where I'll be going now. |

Thanks, Chris. It would be great to see the pics. Maybe you could lay a ruler in the pic so we could get some idea of the size of the pieces. Steve |

Hammy211, I've thought about that too. You might want to re-install the bolts (or shorter ones if needed). THen you could cover those holes with the nice acorn nuts. Steve |

Title: Re: Anyone replace sissy bar with grab handle? Post by Steve530 on 12/15/05 at 19:07:55 That might work. It's 8.25 " wide and 9/16" square. I measure the distance as 8" and the bar as 0.63"= 5/8". Steve |

Title: Re: Anyone replace sissy bar with grab handle? Post by PerrydaSavage on 12/16/05 at 02:44:16 Please let us know if that aftermarket grab-bar works ... I've been thinking about this mod for quite some time, but would like a nice "finished" piece that would be a direct swap for the stock sissy bar. |

Title: Re: Anyone replace sissy bar with grab handle? Post by Steve530 on 12/16/05 at 16:16:48 I will post here if I make a change. I'm weighing the options at this point. Steve |
