Title: Re: roll call please Post by JBALLSATX on 01/12/06 at 16:59:16 I'm here. Added my saddle bag brackets on Christmas, found that the larger tire rubbed on the bolts, Added saddle bags and Progressive shocks (11 1/2"). Man what a difference, the ride is MUCH smooother and I'm riding to work and back every day. I also added a mud flap to the front rim, mounted it inside the rim so the clearance is very tight with the front tire but it seems not to rub. Also, I painted my gas tank (rustoleum gloss black) and am continuing to strip the clear coat off of the engine cases and polishing up the aluminum. I love this bike ! Eventually, I'll get into the carburetor spacer mod but I'm a little scared of the screw removal problems that I've read about in this forum. |

Title: Re: roll call please Post by lancer on 01/12/06 at 19:14:17 Let's see, one brain cell at a time so as not to overtax anything really important... 1. Installed yellow tint Memphis Shields for cold weather riding. 2. Installed Progressive 418's purchased from my favorite store...ebay. 3. After several swaps and redo's finally go the supertrapp on the way I wanted. 4. TBA...(Friday the 13th) I just remembered that I put a set of eGrips on the bars...very comfortable. |

Bolted on HD Dyna muffler. 2. Cleaned Carb 3. Rejetted to 152.5 4. Cut the white spacer. 5. Spark plug door mod. 6. Seat lift mod. Steve |

Title: Re: roll call please Post by SirWilhelm on 01/12/06 at 19:55:27 Even "Newbie" is busy with bike. Wx much better here so doing a lot. Did seat mod, and then redid it after stealer undid it during 700 mile check up. Added sissy bar, second stop light (vertical led array); changed stop light bulb to brighter one; changed headlight to xenon white then back to 80/100 halogen. Added fog lights/running lights, then found that they overwork electrical system so they stay off. Added stock bug screen; replaced horn with matched 110db set; Added two fork bags to seat instead of big bags (I do have two oversized Savage bags I will get the local saddle maker to shrink this spring). Have the bag standoffs to add. And rebuilt floor of golf cart trailer, getting it ready to make it into two cycle trailer. Want to change shocks but sticker price keeping it on back burner. Also have the super brace on "want" list. Also on want list is "turn Alert" (duh keeps forgetting to turn it off in the daytime), also led gauges to show battery condition, and mud flaps. (Last two are budgeted this month). Added bracket on back of sissy bar for ham radio vhf/uhf antenna. Makes the S40 look like one of the PD bikes, so folk see this heavy weight on bike with antenna and pay attention. And am finding out that my motorcycle riding 40 years ago was not much better than a bicycle and the new motorcycles are so much better built and fun to ride. And I wonder how I missed this excitement back then. And I'm busy reading all the posts, and how-to's and where to ride, and ride experiences. This group has so much knowledge that it really should be catalogued for newbies to read. Tnx for group Bill San Angelo, TX white S40/LS650 2005 |

Title: Re: roll call please Post by necropsy on 01/12/06 at 20:46:28 Bone stock '05 S40. Bought her in Sept. The closest thing to a mod would be the skull magnet that I put on the rear fender. She's just so pretty, what would I change about her? Scoping out deals on some new pipes, when I get them, I'll do all the carb work and let her run free. In the future, I see her looking much like sluggo's, but that's a few years off yet. Checked out the bike show in Toronto, Ontario last weekend and seen alot of skull accessories (footpeg, levers, light visors, etc), but everything was just too expensive. |

Title: Re: roll call please Post by Savage_Rob on 01/12/06 at 21:04:46 This fall/winter I've put on Progressive 412 shocks, the Turn Signal Conversion Kit (http://www.electricalconnection.com/other-lighting/tsk-star&sport.htm) and the Amal Mk 2 carb. The carb is ballpark tuned but I need to do a better job. I also picked up one of those magnetic drain plugs and plan to install it at the next oil change. |

Title: Re: roll call please Post by mmosel on 01/13/06 at 01:41:35 I'm here, but all I've done so far this winter is ride when it's not raining. I may get around to putting on the blvd saddle bags that I have, but I have to mount the braces first. I figure that I'll decide on some mods in the summer. |

Title: Re: roll call please Post by klx650sm2002 on 01/13/06 at 02:24:25 I've done most of what I want to do to KLX. Only thing I can think of is to take off the left crank case cover and file the mounting holes of the ignition pickup to advance the timing a little. Clive W :D |

Bought an "03" this past summer and since then have added a Jardine exhaust, progressive shocks, did the seat mod, installed heated grip wraps, added a trip meter and today I am going to tackle the carb mods(152.5 jet and if I feal real daring I will try the spacer mod). Oil change and filter will be next. Then I will be ready for Spring. Almost forgot, Super Brace is on my wish list. Wish me luck with my carb mods. |

Title: Re: roll call please Post by rokrover on 01/13/06 at 07:46:12 Present, Sir! No big mods on our matching pair of his & hers '06 "Scavengers" yet. When my wife quickly glanced at my Clymer Savage manual she misread it as Scavenger and that seemed cool so that's what we call 'em :-/ Richened up the main and pilot jets and air screw on both for better running. Curiously mine still backfires occasionally but hers doesn't, go figure. Did the breakin service on mine and hers is due soon. I am still contemplating the Progressive 418 shocks, despite the manufacturers disclaimer, and a better sounding muffler. I don't want much louder but more of a deeper rumble instead of that lame "putt-putt". Leaning to the Harley Dyna with a turnout and will browse the local Harley dealer this weekend. Other than that, I think I'll leave well enough alone. It's a lovely bike and I appreciate its character more and more every day. |

Title: Re: roll call please Post by vroom1776 on 01/13/06 at 07:56:23 Here. Winter mods: Added dirt by riding in snow & slush. Broke several zip ties in cold weather. Taped mirror back on. Walked home from bars on several occasions. Still to do when I feel like it (think after the superbowl): Replace aluminum sear with steel seat (requires an anvil). Shorten steel pipe, uh, handles bars. Eliminate rigth side switch housing. Switch to turn off brake light. Add more dirt. ... and maybe I should fix that exhaust leak. |

Title: Re: roll call please Post by SeeAPierce on 01/13/06 at 08:03:25 I'm here - I'll be posting some of my experiences later, but mostly over the past few weeks for my '06 S40: --152.5 main jet + replace those bowl screws with SS alan heads. --Sportster muffler install with 10 degree bent pipe method - looks great! --working on new rear turn signals. Great thing about SoCal is I can take a test ride every day! |

Title: Re: roll call please Post by Digger on 01/13/06 at 10:57:14 As this has been a pleasant winter thus far in the Springs, I've been ridin' my Savage regular. Recent maintenance activity: Oil and filter change (Mobil Clean 5000, 10W-40, EMGO oil filter) Valve lash inspection (all four clearances good [0.005"]) Decompression cable adjustment Brake fluid change Drive belt needed a little tightening (5 flats on adjuster bolt) Air cleaner was still good (original still in place) Lubed throttle tube Lubed brake pedal pivot Lubed gear shift lever linkage Lubed kickstand Lubed throttle and clutch cables Lubed clutch and brake lever pivots Lubed speedo cable Fixed vibration under gas tank (speedo cable mount) Lubed rear brake cable Torqued cylinder head nuts (I regret to say that a less than inspired cleaning job on the rubber plug resulted in a rather extravagant oil leak. I bought a new plug and re-did the job the right way.) Attached some pipe insulation foam to the front of my top box (in between the top box and the sissy bar) to reduce top box flopping when riding on rough surfaces. |

Title: Re: roll call please Post by Ed_L. on 01/13/06 at 16:16:45 Work done so far this winter on my silver '02 includes valve lash check, didn't need to adjust anything. Replaced the stock headlight with an aftermarket unit. Removed the stock saddle bag mounts and made a quickly removable replacement set out of stainless. Currently working on a set of forward controls made out of aluminium plate and plan to polish and clearcoat them. The wife is starting to get mad about all the time I'm spending in the shop working on the bike, can't explain it to her, she doesn't understand :-/. Since the exhaust is off the engine I'll do some minor grinding on the port to help the flow. Starting to think about some new rubber, the stock rear tire is getting thin. Also getting ready to cast a 3"x5" "Thumper" emblem out of aluminium to replace the Suzuki emblem on the rear pylon. Once everything gets done it will be time to get some riding in, working on the scoot really eats into riding time. |

Title: Re: roll call please Post by Max_Morley on 01/13/06 at 19:51:19 First project is to get my BIL's newely acquired 87 Savage cleaned up, maintained and road ready. He gets my old saddle bags, windhshield and whatever goodies are unused on th shelves. SuperTrapp still has sluggo's name on it. BIL is going with a stock HD double taper with the adapter pipe to kick it out and back so it doesn't cook the rear brake lever and springs. He is going with the open look that Matt started (that is where the bike came from on the 'for sale' part of this site) by removing the triangular side covers as Matt had installed one of lancers carbs w/cone air cleaner. Also need to get the crankcase breather system fixed somehow. On mine I hope to get floorbords, ISO grips, and the hinged back fender that is up on the shelf. Maybe the sprung solo seat. I rode Matt's ith the seat mod and it makes a big difference, like a horse saddle. I have some LED stop/turn lights for the license plate and am hoping for some LED surface mount turn lights on the fairing and then find some LED bright running lights to go in the fairing where the running/turn lights are now. FYI a Savage will fit in the short box of a Chev Colorado Crewcab wth the tailgate down, that is how I got Matt's back from Lopez Island, WA to Moses Lake. ED will you be taking orders for the Thumper Castings you are considering making?? Max |

Title: Re: roll call please Post by WavJamR on 01/13/06 at 21:24:01 Winter Mods: Screaming Eagle II muffler install with 10 degree bent pipe method - Thanks Lancer :) Replaces several fasteners that been lost due to vibration. Lubed the cables. Removed the carb and had it re-built (cleaned). Cleaned the air filter and box. New Spark plug. Drained the tank and cleaned the gas filter. Replaced gas and vacum lines running to carb. Cleaned out petcock. Greased various touch points. |

Title: Re: roll call please Post by lancer on 01/14/06 at 05:43:58 Also getting ready to cast a 3"x5" "Thumper" emblem out of aluminium to replace the Suzuki emblem on the rear pylon. That is a very interesting idea...what are you going to use for your mold? The reason I ask is that my wife is preparing to make jewelry, gold and silver stuff, and we will have a kiln in a couple of months. With the tools and equipment she will have, she might be able to do something like that for me. |
|
Title: Re: roll call please Post by Ed_L. on 01/14/06 at 07:47:01 I used to cast lead a lot using plaster of paris for the mold and was going to try the same for aluminium which has a slightly higher melting point. The heat source to melt the aluminium will be a modified hibachi grill using a bathroom vent fan forcing air into the grill. It is sort of like a small forced air furnace using charcoal brickets as a fuel. Most charcoal brickets are made up of almost 1/3 coal. I've used the design before to melt some brass so I'm hoping that this experiment will work with aluminium. I'll take a bunch of pictures for positerity sake and maybe a good laugh or two. ;) |

Title: Re: roll call please Post by Capt._Capsize on 01/14/06 at 08:18:02 I check in now and then. I have an '01 that replaced a '96. The '96 was still a good bike but a deal came along that I couldn't pass up. Since it is my daily commuter I have a big fiber glass fairing, a Honda Magna headlight (fills the fairing better), air horns, fog lights, shim and jet mod, seat mod, sportster muffler with extension, taller sissy bar to hang my back pack on, saddle bags, LED tail/directional mod, I think that's it. |
|
Title: Re: roll call please Post by Savage Librarian on 01/14/06 at 08:47:42 Not too many mods actually made this winter, I don't think. Swapped out mufflers. Replaced my tires. Mostly I've just been getting the parts together for "phase 3" as I like to think of it. Phase 1 was stock. Phase 2 was making it as comfortable for 2 people as possible. As I'm currently hunting down a larger bike for 2-up riding, Phase 3 is bobbing it. So I'm just accumulating things at the moment. |

Title: Re: roll call please Post by klx650sm2002 on 01/15/06 at 02:45:22 Hey Lancer More advance would be a good move, as long as the compression isn't too high. I think that the Savage is the same as the KLX in that the ignition pickup is screwed to the inside of the left casing. You will need a new gasket and may need to drop the oil. It may only be possible to get 2 or 3 degrees more advance, but you should be able to feel the difference. Clive W :D |

Title: Re: roll call please Post by SouthernMD on 01/15/06 at 04:16:34 SOMD here. I haven’t done much to my bike. I bought it in October with the overtime I made from a trip to Louisiana after hurricane Katrina. It already had soft bags on it, no supports but they don’t rub so I’m not worried about chafing. The sissy bar was missing it's pad, found one on eBay for 35 bucks. The previous owner had over filled the oil which blew into the air box and saturated the air filter with oil so I replaced it with a K&N factory replacement. I also replaced the plug with a NGK Iridium. That’s about it I’ll try the carb mod today if the wife doesn’t have some other project for me to do. Does the jet have the size stamped on it? |
|
Title: Re: roll call please Post by lancer on 01/15/06 at 04:53:28 All jets have the sizes stamped on them, though some require a magnifier to see it. Some are on the end and some are on the side. |

Title: Re: roll call please Post by DianeS. on 01/15/06 at 17:55:33 DianeS. here. I only got my 2000 Savage two months ago, and I'm a new biker so....not too adventurous to do many mods until I read the manual and get some more knowledge. Our garage does stay above freezing though, so I've managed to keep the bike for use on the nicer days, just to keep the battery charged etc. I did order saddlebags, a windshield, and an engine case guard but they aren't in yet. I did also put in a K & N air filter, and oil filter. The bike came with a jardine exhaust, but I'll have to see whether I need to try and do the carb mod. or not. Runs pretty well as far as I can tell, but I'll know better once I've ridden it more in the warmer weather. DianeS. |

Title: Re: roll call please Post by Reelthing on 01/16/06 at 05:28:00 may have already had a rejet - is the brass idle mixture plug still in the carb or has it been pulled? you can see in the 2nd picture where it is - so there's either plug in there or you can see a slotted screw if it's been pulled odds are good it's already been rejet http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?board=tech;action=display;num=1098869040#2 |

Meanwhile "The Lettuce" is the nickname my GSX1100 riding best mate Mick came up with after discovering I'd caught the Savage bug - jesting that it was "about as savage as a lettuce" and the name stuck. I love my LS650 to bits. Must fly - papers to hand in at Hacienda - that's the IRS to you statesiders. Sun's out again so I'll do the 60km round trip on the old salad shaker. Bendiciones. |

Title: Re: roll call please Post by Tammi on 01/20/06 at 06:52:04 I'm here! That should happen sometime in mid-April! (** fingers crossed **) |

By the way, they can get very rowdy at times. When I was flying helicopters in Vietnam, it was a common daily occurance to have to dodge the rice farmers and water buffallow when flying VERY LOW AND FAST. **For an Army helicopter pilot, low and fast means.....150 mph and 3' above the ground...now that is fun!! Reel, I, for one, have had good luck with Sta-Bil. I used some once in my old '81 Gold Wing when I had to put it into storage for three years (I was going overseas for a military tour of duty and could not bring the bike :(). Anyways, after 3+ years, I got 'er out of storage and she fired right up. Never had to do any carb work or anything. I can't remember what the old gas smelled like, but it definitely wasn't a varnish smell or I would have never tried to start it without a thorough flush and cleaning. I hope this helps! |

Title: Re: roll call please Post by Greg_650 on 01/24/06 at 06:26:18 There are several issues, but the first one is that I had a job that sucked really bad. Pay was okay but it was really phyiscally hard, the place was dirty, and the company was a mind killer. No thinking allowed. The whole place was a reverse career move, if you know what I mean. My wife had lousy work, too, and kept bouncing through the agencies. So I kept at it. Now, she makes much more than I did, and has benefits for me that are even better than I had for myself. Her vacation, sick time, insurance and 401K started immediately...you get the picture.... Secondly, I hurt my back lifting back in September. Really. I am getting older after all, and I was doing tasks that I once did easily at 30. Persistent sharp pain and an MRI finally showed 2 bulging disks in the lumbar area. I have an active Workers Comp claim over it and my doctor put me on work restrictions and light duty a while back. The company didn't really appreciate that, but they reluctantly gave me bench work anyway Recently, when the company started to experience a work slowdown, I suspect that I was deemed non-versatile. I signed a piece of paper stating that I was "Terminated...Lack of work". Funny too...that was 1 week short of 1 year when I'd be eligible for vacation time....Oh Hey! That would be today! |

Title: Re: roll call please Post by RadarORiley on 01/24/06 at 12:43:24 My hubby always tells people just when he had me making enough so he could retire, I quit. He could easily retire now but then he'd have to be with me & that's worse than working ;D When I'm down, or just lazy, he's a great cook and housekeeper. He even folds clothes. This winter has been so warm I've not had any time I couldn't ride, but the wind has been unbelievable. Guess I could have worked on the bike then but only gave her a loving pat as I went by. |

Not only housework laundry shopping etc. but raising the kids too. Got two girls one age four yrs, the other eight weeks. It's great work and beats the tar out of anything else I've done. As far as mods: Carb mods, Jardine Exhaust, new turn lights rear, removed fender rails and sissy bar, recovered seats in brown leather. |

Title: Re: roll call please Post by MacAttack on 05/24/06 at 12:31:56 Coming up on 1000 miles. She's my wife's bike so no hardcore mods, but I did order a K&N filter, since we live on gravel roads. I left the snorkel on for that reason. I ordered saddlebags, and I plan to get a windshield once you guys recommend a good one (we're both 5'10/230 or so). I am thinking about a Supertrapp muffler, and some jetting work, maybe next year after the warranty expires. That all depends on my convincing DW that it's better for the bike, and more fun to ride (I believe both are true). |

Good luck on the backfire thing. I'm still tracking what I would call a 5% backfire. In other words, I've got 95% of it gone. Yesterday, I decided to pull the entire exhaust off and replace the header/engine exhaust gasket. I've gone through the series of tighten, run it, tighten, run it, etc. Rode about 200 miles today and darned if I still don't have that same 5% backfire!!! >:( I've been through the carburetor, and that thing is a clean as a pin with no gunk anywhere, it looks brand spanking new on the inside. Floats aren't sticking, jetting is right. The only thing I can figure is that it is next to impossible to remove all the backfire from it. Heck, I'm even running a tick on the rich side and I'm still getting that little annoying backfire. Anybody else got any tips to check on? While I had the exhaust off, I checked the muffler to make sure it is tight, it hadn't loosened up any. Now, I will say this. I had the bike running pretty darn rich on the idle mixture, where the bike would actually idle slow because the screw wasn't in its happy medium. I've since put it in its happy medium but no difference. |

I had not considered the possibilty that it would always have a small backfire. I currently get one shifting up under throttle as opposed to last week when I let off the throttle. I got a very light almost inaudible fart when shutting down this afternoon. With the single baffle slash cut sporster muff, it was like throwing a ham sandwich down a hall way. I suppose events permitting I will remove the exhaust and the header. then reattach everythig. Then I will diassemble the intake and reinstall. If that fails then I will stand at my attitude adjuster. Maybe take a walk behind the dumpster. |

Title: Re: roll call please Post by lancer on 05/25/06 at 07:39:01 It's all in the pilot system. If the adjustment screw is not capable of removing the backfiring then you need the next larger size pilot jet. That is all there is to it. The proper sized pilot jet, with the adjusting screw set properly WILL STOP the backfiring. necropsy wrote:

Title: Re: roll call please Post by 911radioman on 05/25/06 at 07:55:13 Lancer, what is it that I am missing then? I've rejetted to the larger pilot, put a new gasket at the header/engine, tweaked that screw every which way until sundown, and I still have a 5% backfire. I've had the carb apart and it is clean as a pin. What do I need to check next? |
