Title: Fuel Question Post by guitarsr4girls2 on 01/26/06 at 20:53:10 I feel kind of silly about asking this, but I'm gonna have to. My '00 Savage doesn't have an "off" for the fuel on the petsmock, only ON, RESERVE, and the other one that's PRI or something...so which do I turn it to when I pull the bike into the garage? Instead of turning it to "off", am I supposed to turn it to RES? |

just stop, turn machine off and leave in on position. it's a vaccum system so fuel only flows when engine running. in the pri position it will flow freely. |

Title: Re: Fuel Question Post by Steve530 on 01/26/06 at 22:05:21 If you look closely at the petcock, there is a vacuum hose running to the carb. When the engine is running, the vacuum pulls on a diaphram in the petcock that allows the fuel to flow. No vacuum, no flow. You can think of it as a petcock that turns itself off. :) |

Title: Re: Fuel Question Post by Greg_650 on 01/26/06 at 23:17:56 Yep, gone are the days of flooded carbs and gas on the floor. ON and RES are automatic ON/OFF with vacuum. The PRI is for maintenance (or after it). It is just plain ON all the time, so if you don't need to fill tha carb first, leave it in the automatic positions and forget it. |

Title: Re: Fuel Question Post by Panther on 01/28/06 at 07:24:53 I thought "RES" was a reservoir of gas. Like when you go out of gas, then you turn it to "RES", It starts again with enough fuel till your next gas station. At least thats what I use it for. |

Title: Re: Fuel Question Post by Steve530 on 01/28/06 at 07:44:42 That's the way I undertand it, Panther. It's just that there is no "OFF" setting. The fuel flow is stopped when the engine is shut off because the airflow in the carb that causes the vacuum is gone. The "PRI" setting allows fuel flow with a vacuum. |

Title: Re: Fuel Question Post by Savage_Rob on 01/28/06 at 08:26:09 Yup, I always thought of it as "reserve" fuel but "reservoir" fits too. It's basically tapped at a lower level. In any case, the vacuum petc0ck is a nice thing in my opinion. When I got the Amal carb, I had the option of either converting the petc0ck to a manual version or installing a port for vacuum on the carb. I chose the latter and am pleased with it so far. |
