Dang! Those are some fine looking Savages. No wonder we're so proud. But that sport bike looks like a refugee from a James Bond movie. I'm a traditionalist. It's either a Savage/ S40 or.... it made a wrong turn....

ok then, heres one from a couple of months ago,my bike on the left,jim-r's bike on the right(before new paint),and my dads sporty 1200c in the middle(its also my long trip/highway bike). and my cage is in the background, its a 2000 ford ranger with 20in by 10in rims with 275 tires, also has a 2,000 watt sony sound system, and i recently shaved the tailgate handle. the door handles are next, then probably air bags, and black paint.  and if i hit the lotto i'll drop a 5.0 into it  ;D

Perry ,I got the fender off ebay. The sportster fender
is longer and wider where it mounts to the forks.
So I cut some metal out of the middle welded it back
together, drilled new holes and trimed the sides
down at a angle then repainted. If you have a hacksaw,
drill and access to a welder it's pretty easy ;D
Glad you like it. Heres a better shot of the front.

B'ys ... the more I see that Sportster fender on the LS, the more I like it ... sadly I have neither the tools or the mechanical savy to attempt such a mod. Sure looks nice though ... I have never been too fond of the stock Savage front fender ... sides are too deep and don't "show" the tire like it should ... speaking of which, I recently saw a 90/90 front tire on a Savage and think it also looks better than the stock 100/90 ...

Sluggo,

Is your rear fender just the little short chrome piece?  Or is there more down low but not visible?

Title: Re: Show Us Your Ride !!
Post by sluggo on 02/15/06 at 21:24:16

it's just the chrome fender you see. it will support a passenger, that is if anyone was brave enough to climb on board with me.

This is a few months old.  I've removed the luggage rack and ammo box and she has the OEM Boulevard S40 saddlebags now.  I've also replaced the stock carb with the Amal Mk2.  Otherwise, this pic is pretty close.

OK this is my current ride, it is not a Savage, but I do have a 96 LS650 that I acquired about a month ago.  I will post a picture of it very soon.  The Savage is a very cool little bike, no offense to anyone.  I put in a new battery, spark plug, oil and filter change and belt adjustment.  Runs really good.  Anyway here is my ride.

haha well there was a nice day a week ago and thens when i took the first pic ^^^ with my bike in pieces.  I took her all apart and put everything in my bedroom; well my parents went away for a week and told me i could bring the bike in the den in the basement! i was shocked, but my mother claimed that the rug in my room couldn't be replaced as easily as the one in the basement so they allowed me to move down there.  The last week i have done a lot of work on the bike, and now i have some engine/ carb stuff to do, but im happy with the results so far.

Of corse the parents came home and the basement smelled strongly of paint and carb cleaner and that didn't make them too happy, but overall its going well.  Besides they only have 4, 1/2 months with me until im off to the NAPS then the CGA so they should enjoy my company, even if it includes my bike haha

Thanks for the kind words.

911 - the lights came from JC Whitney and the light bar came from cycleaccessoriesoutlet.com.

Don't bother with the lights. They were cheap, less than $12 US, and cheaply made. The housing is so thin that it could not withstand the vibration and it separated from the mounting in less than 75 miles.

The light bar was less than $50 US and is of reasonable quality. I checked the Cycle Accessories retail site and it was not functioning.  However, the dealer site was: caodistributing.com and they still list the bar.

Yeah, my dad bought those lights to put on his Honda.  They will actually work if you completely dismatle them, attach the wires properly, replace the rivets on the "mounts", screw the pieces of the housing together...he eventually got them working right, but it took effort.  Not worth it by half.

Here is the most recent pic of the Savage as it currently looks.  Was just looking back at my original post in this thread and it was the day I picked the bike up so I hadn't done anything to it yet.

Ed,

Looks really sharp.  The forward controls look good and beefy... kinda like they belong on a VTX 1800 ?!?...

Picked up the headlight on E-bay, don't remember from who. It is one of the aftermarket replacements for a Harley with a single bolt for a mount. Had to drill a hole in the tripple tree and use a small piece of steel on the underside to make it work. Only cost about $100 and the stock one had a small crack. The forward controls are the ones I made out of 1/2 inch aluminium plate, didn't feel like trying to make them out of steel.

Ed is it a 7 inch harley headlight?  Thats what i splapped onto my savage when i tried to change the bulb and the oem headlight was completly rotted out.  I think it makes the bike look a lot better.

Do you have saddle bag brackets installed or do you jus slap the bags over the rearseat when you need them?

I was using the stock saddle bag brackets but changed over to this set I made out of some stainless rod. Ended up brazing an extra "V" piece in for support but kept the design the same. The brackets just go around the rear turn signal posts and clip into the front mounts. They don't carry any weight, just keep the bags in place while riding. Only takes a couple of minutes to remove the bags and brackets, just untie the bags and unclip the brackets. Of course now that I can remove the bags I find that I am leaving them on the bike.

One picture is a closeup of the mount I welded up from a washer and a piece of thickwalled tubing. The other is the bracket on the bike.
The headlight is the same diameter as the stock one, the only difference is that it is 9" long, wanted a rectangular one but couldn't find any for cheap.

Swing door mod (to access plug w/o tank removal)

Electrical tape patching up a half-busted right tail light  :'(

Melted vinyl on tail pipe  :o

I don't plan on making any other cosmetic mods to Thumper, but one never knows, eh?

I have a '97 Savage with some mild customizing. It has a H-D soft tail muffler and custom connector pipe, took all the hardware from the rear fender and put on small bullet signal lights that also work as running lights. I also put on a side mount license plate bracket with a chrome Model A Ford stop light. I had to make the bracket for the light from a chrome fuel pump block off plate for a small block Chevy. It really cleaned up the rear fender. I left the holes on the fender open. I drilled lightening holes in the front heat shield and in the drive sprocket cover using a drill press. Reminds me of the old Indian dirt racers. The bad news is that my wife can't ride any more so I posted it in the Market Place section. Hate to part with it after I did the work on it but I have my own bike to ride and I can't justify  keeping them both.

The bodywork has gone to a guy at the local Ford garage who is going to spray it "Performance Blue"with a little extra metal flake.
Then a local airbrush guy is going to show me how to "Flame" it and he's going to do the flames in a light pearl colour.  ;D
I will send in some piccies as and when progress is made!

I was reading over the latest on this thread and realized that I do not have a current pic of "Rex", so here he is.  This pic was taken several weeks ago during the testing of the Hard Khrome drag pipe style muffler, then it was off, and now it is back on.
The only change since is the addition of a tool pouch which is now on the back of the sissy bar.

By the way, since the addition of the UFO (Ultimate Flow Optimizer) and the rejetting that goes with it (pilot jet from #35 down to #15 & still slightly rich ... needle clip on 4th groove down ... main jet to #240 & will be going one larger still) the performance has definitely improved.  I am especially surprised with the quicker throttle response ... and I thought it was quick before ... and the extra power in the entire range.  The manufacturer claims that the UFO will increase power by 1 hp per 100cc of engine displacement, which is saying that on a Savage there should be a 6-7 hp increase by just adding this little piece to the carb, and that is A HUGE INCREASE!

The only thing I have left to do cosmeticly is the front turn signals are definatly gonna be replaced to match the rear and I still need to attend to the holes left by the OEM tailight that was replaced with the "cateye" type under the rear fender. Title: Re: Show Us Your Ride !!
Post by lancer on 07/13/06 at 07:02:40

Clive,

It is remarkable what a little streamlining will do for a carb bore.  The 36mm Mikuni VM roundslide I have on the bike comes stock with a #35 pilot jet, which I promptly changed out for a #30 to get the low range proper.  It was set at about 2-2.5  turns out, so I could have gone down one more size tot he 27.5, but did not have that jet at the time so I just left the #30.
The instructions say to cut the pilot # in half, so a # 15 would be the desired jet, but I did not have one on hand ... a #20 was the smallest in my box so I went with that one initially (3 turns out).  It ran but was very rich with a fair amount of black smoke out the pipe.  My next order to Sudco included about 30 assorted jets, pilot and main jets, so I would be ready for the marathon tuning sessions.  I was still not quite convinced that I needed to go all the way to a #15 yet, so I dropped it to a #17.5 ... 3 turns out & still RICH.  So I finally put in the #15 pilot ... 2.5 turns out ... the engine liked it better but it was still a little rich.  The instructions say that if you get down to the jet that is half of the original and it is still running rich, then to avoid getting too lean on the mid and high range, instead of dropping another pilot jet size you can drill a tiny hole in the cupped portion of the needle jet that sticks up in the carb bore.  That will lean the low range further without affecting the mid-high range more.  So I drilled the hole(the actual size was between the 1st and 2nd size recommended), and it helped noticeably.  I am set at 2 1/4 turns out right now with a slight rich low range.  I am going to drill out to the next size hole, and I think that will do it for the slow speed range.
I have set the needle clip on the 4th slot and am running a #240 main jet to make up for the smaller pilot jet.
The responsiveness is amazing, in fact it is almost too sensitive.  When cruizing down the road in anything less than half throttle it is sensitive to the point of being almost squirrally.  If I even think of moving my hand it responds.  I have to actually concentrate on keeping my throttle hand motionless.  It reminds me of when I first started learning to fly helicopters.  The control touch sensitivity is so fine that you have to train your reflexes to respond in an automatic, unthinking fashion, so as not to OVERCONTROL.   The throttle touch is that fine now.  Hitting the throttle at any speed, but especially at slow speed, gets immediate response.  The midrange is very strong and the high range is much stronger as well.  I will be going up to a #250 main jet when I pull the carb for the needle jet drilling.
Before the UFO install the #250 jet had been a little too rich, with soggy performance in the high range, but I expect it will be the final main jet now with the other changes that have been made.

I have been very impressed with what a little $30 piece of quality plastic will do.  When you think about it, going from a #30 pilot to a #15 and also include the drilling in the needle jet, it is amazing.  That is dropping SIX PILOT JET SIZES & THAT IS A BIG CHANGE IN ANYONES BOOK.

For a carb that lists for $140, plus a $30 add on, $170 get you a lot of performance.

The bench flow testing done with a VM roundslide + UFO  vs  a TM flatslide showed what this thing can do.  The testing included about 10 positions from idle to full throttle, and the VM + UFO  outflowed the TM flatslide in 3/4 of the positions.  If I remember right, the TM had a very slight edge in about 3 positions, the VM a slight edge in about 3 positions, and the VM well ahead in the other 4 positions.   Something like that.

Gotta go, domestic responsibilities call.

Lancer,

2 questions:

1)  This is on a mikuni VM, right?  The one I got from you (38 mm) does not have clip positions on the needle.  Are you using a different needle (than stock w/ the carb)?

2)  Why are you using such a small main jet?  What size carb is it?  For my 38 mm, you said I should be running a 310 at 4k feet...  Using a 290 w/ decent results, but the plug is all black... (probably the pilot, IMO).

The 38mm Mikuni VM you got from me should have a needle with 5 tiny grooves for the little clip to go in to.  Pull that little puppy out and take a look again, I think you will find them on the needle.  That is the stock needle that comes with a VM carb.

Regarding the main jet size.  Since your experience and reports from several others with the new Mikuni VM carbs that have been in the carb kits recently, I have been revisiting the jetting of these carbs.  There seems to have been some minor looking changes the carbs and I believe some jetting affects as well.  In any case, they are flowing a lot of fuel with the stock jets.  I made the recommendation for your carb based on my own carb (an older 38mm VM) and then also using the Pocket Tuner slide rule for changes based on altitude and temp.  The end result was a main jet that is still a bit rich for your engine as noted by the plug condition.  Others have reported similar findings.
So what I have done is to order a new carb for my Savage and start at square one again and go through the jetting process.  I found that the stock #35 pilot and #310 main jet on the 36mm carb was too rich.  I dropped down to a #30 for the pilot which worked well, but that still had the adjusting screw at 2 1/4 turns out, so more ideally the pilot should be the #27.5 ...this is basically at sea level & in a high temp/humidity environment.  The main jet ended up being a #250.  These jet sets were on the new stock 36mm VM.
I then installed the UFO in the bottom of the carb slide and now have the jetting at a #15 pilot (with the needle jet top drilled to lean the slow speed curcuit further, the needle on the 4th groove/slot to richen the midrange, and the main is currently a #240 but will be going back up to a #250 or possibly #260... we shall see which is best.

For your situation, based on the reports  and the jetting testing done witht the new carb, you might try ...
the 38mm VM comes with a #30 pilot stock, which may be OK for you if your adj screw is not turned out more than 2 turns out.  If it is more than 2 turns out then drop down to the # 27.5 pilot and that should do it.
Your plug is black so the main is to rich ... come down one size at a time until the engine revs strongly at full throttle with no bogging down.  At that point your plug should be looking the proper  very light tan color.  I suspect that you may end up somewhere around the #240 main jet.

Just remember that every engine is a little different, your location affects it, and jet and tune until the engine feels good and strong.

I have been puzzled by the difference in jetting between the earlier Mikuni VM and the new ones.  Something has changed but I do not know exactly what it is.  Regardless, we jet/tune until it is right.

Thanks Lancer!

Based on your suggestion of a 310 main, I was a little nervous to go much further down.  Will go down one size at a time... Start w/ the 280 tonight!  Will also look more closely for the clip positions on the needle.

That's an interesting luggage rack.  Where'd it come from?

Title: Re: Show Us Your Ride !!
Post by JerryAssburger on 07/21/06 at 15:58:38

It's one of those "Universal racks" that I guess JC Whitney would sell, but its been narrowed by about 4", and then I butchered the top off of the sissy  bar and used the bottom part as a mount/support for the rack. It's not too pretty close up; I have to tack on a bottom plate so you can't see the regulator under the rails. I can take a more detailed picture of it if you want.

Here's me and my 1996 Savage in Beautiful British Columbia

http://w1.bikepics.com/pics/2006/09/13/bikepics-678273-800.jpg

PS - I do have proper riding gear - I don't normally ride with flip-flops (only when it's too hot for boots - kidding) but this was the day I got my bike. My husband moved it onto the sidewalk because I was so excited to have a picture taken with it! I hadn't even taken it out for my first ride yet. You know how it is. . .

http://w1.bikepics.com/pics/2006/09/13/bikepics-678275-800.jpg

This was my third and final parking-lot practice after getting my bike. It was good to finally get out on the road, and, as of this writing, I have now logged about 600 miles. It was good to finally be able to shift beyond second gear.

As invisible as we are, you guys are taking off your reflectors? The thought of replacing them with skulls has crossed my mind, but the added safety/visibility outweighs the aesthetics here in my opinion.

They don't see me, unless it's as a target, so why make a more visible target?  As far as I'm concerned, it's my job not to get hit by some idiot who wouldn't see me if I was riding a bike naked with a chicken on my head.  Plus they would look exceptionally stupid on my particular savage (http://w1.bikepics.com/pics/2005%5C11%5C21%5Cbikepics-471053-800.jpg).

Like my football coach used to say, "Head on a swivel!"

I haven't put my new Harley Sportster seat on yet but here's some before and after pics of my bike.  I had a friend who has worked for Maaco for 17 years paint my bike this awesome HOT LAVA ORANGE!  Any opinions?  He charged me $150.  NO lie! Looks great in the sun if you can't tell from the pictures.

I replaced the buckhorn bars with Harley drag bars (bought on eBay), ISO grips, screamin eagle muffler (bought on eBay), custom bullet marker lights both front and back (front ones not yet installed, bought from J&P Cycles) and Harley seat (not yet installed, bought from eBay).  This has been a great bike!  My husband likes it a lot and mentioned maybe getting another one for him to fix up like mine.  He has 95' Kawasaki Vulcan right now.

Did you have to do any modifings to make it fit and why did you go 150/80 instead of 150/90??

I shift without the clutch so often I don't even think about it. Upshift, just relax the throttle a bit to take the load off the cogs & click it in. Downshift, just give the throttle a squirt & click it down at the same time. Up[shift to second from first isn't good under hard acceleration. D/shift to first requires a serious throttle application to not drag the rear wheel. Just try using the throttle to make shifting easy, it works!

Title: Re: Show Us Your Ride !!
Post by hutch on 12/16/06 at 11:55:55

Been shifting that way for years, and have never broke anything in 40 years. The only time I use clutch is toset at intersection. Never wore out a clutch cable. I guess when you learn to drive from a truck driver at 12 years old it helps. If truck drivers used a clutch thru all those gears could you imagine what their left leg would look like. With practice it is so easy, people think you are speed shifting. The tricky part is knowing the right time to down shift without over revving the engine. Just takes practice.

Title: Re: Show Us Your Ride !!
Post by hutch on 12/16/06 at 15:46:02

Dr Jim
I have put jockey shifts on a lot of bikes over the years and never used a foot clutch. Just use the one on the bars. I know what you are thinking, How do you use your left hand to pull in the clutch, and your left hand to shift at the same time? Answer; you don't. Just shift like Just an old guy and I described and no problems. If for some reason you did not get down to 1st before stopping just reach across with your right hand and pop it into 1st. I have a Triumph chopper that I built 2yrs, ago(for sale) that has a right foot shift and a left hand shift. I have already figured out how to put a "Jock" on the Savage. Very simple really. If you need to know how just PM me.You also wouldn't believe how easy it is to find Nuetral with the hand shift.
