Title: Tune Up Time - Suggestions
Post by Creator_11 on 03/27/06 at 18:06:58

Its tune up time for the Savage and I wanted to know what spark plug and oil type you guys recommend running in the Savage.

I was thinking a 20w50 or 10w40?  :-/

the cap on my bike says 10w40 so i went with that... i know some here have done 15w40 i think? a lot of guys here use different brands/weights with oil. It tends to be an interesting topic.

Iridium Plug (http://www.ngk.com/results_cross.asp?pid=DPR8EIX-9&kid=2526)

Thats a nice plug, i currently have it in.

As i have heard before " You only have one plug so make it a good one"

I use the iridium plug and motorcycle-specific 15W50 pure synthetic.

NGK DPR8EA-9 and Castrol GTX 20W50. That plug is suppose to go out of production soon, or already has. So, I'll run the Champion version or an NGK DPR8-EIX. Stock is a 9 series plug, mine works better with an 8 heat range.

I've always been leary of the Iridium Plugs and Bosh Platniums ever since I learned that some engines don't like them too much. I.E my Saturn car eats those plugs like theres no tomorrow. Honest with in 3 weeks my car had burnt out a set of these, I've always stuck with NGK V-powers for cars.

...but I will consider giving the Iridium Plugs a try in the savage.

I just use an NGK stock plug and AMSOIL 10w40.

I put the NGK 9 series Iuridum plug in and could not believe the difference.  My bike ran smoother with better acceleration.

bosh plugs are crap,i have a  2.5 L ranger, with the 4 cylinder ,2 spark plugs per cylinder so i need eight plugs, anyhow when  i changed the plugs i  spent $18 for 8 performance bosh plugs, which made the truck run like sh!t, i checked everything, and everything was alright. so i went to the ford dealer and spent $70 on the oem plugs  :D and it runs smoother than ever.

after that ordeal i did some research on bosh plugs and found many people have had the tip break of the plug and go threw the exhaust valve then out the tailpipe, and others have had them shoot out of the head.

the savage comes with a ngk so use that !!!!

Let alone not wanting to do a Ranger the second time... those plugs are a bear to change out!  Own one of those myself... :D

I think this time around I'm gonna run 20w50   ???

So is 20w50 a good mixture to run? or 10w40?

At 602 miles I just changed the oil and filter, along with both gaskets. 2 qts 10W40 is all it took to fill her up.

Don't intend to take her to the stealer/dealer to open her up at this time for a look see at the valves or anything else.

I'll take my chances for any warrenty problems/claims that may happen in the future. In the mean time I ain't gonna worry about it.

Right now I'm trying Shell Rotella 15W40 and it seems to be doing quite well.

I havent ever had a problem with my Bosh Platniums +4's in my honda del sol.  I have had them over 3 years now and no trouble.

I do need to reinstall my NGK starkplug on my bike.  It did make a little bit of a difference.

BUT I think I bought bad gas and fouled it out or something.  Last week the gas I bought was so bad I had to put in some STP jet fuel carb/fuel injector treatment.  Before it wouldnt even idle.  All it would do was stall and sputter hehe.  That stuff did the trick tho.

You could do it now. I'm planning to do it at 600 miles. That seems to be plenty of time for everything to seat and bed in.

Going with WD's recommendation.  20w-50 has the best operational range...

I agree with MacAttack, switch to synthetic now. If you have any doubts about using the best oil available too soon, be advised that brand new Corvettes are delivered to the dealer with synthetic oil in the pan.

I use the NGK Iridium because my Savage likes it, and it does last longer for me than the stock version.
Oil...sythetic all the time, usually AMsoil, and I use both the 10-30 or 10-40.
By the way, the Amsoil 20W in the forks makes for a much better ride.

Any torque wrench is better than no torque wrench. If you are working on your own Savage you really should have one. I don't generally recommend cheap tools, but in this case you are better off with a cheap one rather than be without. So next time you hear of a roving tool sale in your area, buy a Taiwanese brand there. They are pretty inexpensive.

Or even stop by your local Harbor Freight for an inexpensive one.  I have a 1/2" drive Craftsman but I picked up a 1/4" drive at HF very cheap when doing the head seal/plug fix and it did the job for the cylinder head cover bolts (with a u-joint and/or small extension in some cases).
