Title: muff opinions
Post by russ_g on 04/07/06 at 17:11:39

Ok, IMHO the stock muffler just doesn't look or sound  the greatest.  However, I also don't want my bike to be too loud.  Any middle of the road here?

I'd recommend going with a sportster muffler.  Easy to put on, enough volume to hear yourself without irritating the neighbors, and about as inexpensive as you're going to get, methinks.  Louder than stock, but not so loud as any of the others, from what I hear.

Thanks much - so if one were to look for a Sportster muffler?  Is there a standard part number?  Anything else required to install this?  Forgive my stupidity.

russ_g,

I went to a local harley dealer and browsed through their used mufflers.  I found a nice used muffler from a Dyna for $20.  It has a different bracket than the Sportster muffler that was easier to mount, but I had to have a short exhaust pipe extension made at a muffler shop.

I think you need to buy a Sportster or Dyna muffler made for a bike before 2004. The newer mufflers have a small crossover that you would have to plug, so don't get one of those.

Steve

Russ, check out the Supertrapp muffler. Expensive, but its a deep rumble, much like a Harley. Seriously! Big increase in power too!. It has disks that you add and remove to change sound and performance.  Dont forget to get a K@N air filter also if you get a less restrictive muffler.

I've been browsing at Cycle Shack's mufflers.  They have a turn out muffy that I like and appears to be the same exhaust in their Universal Fit section marked MTO-134.  1 3/4 hook up with a 2 inch overall diameter.  Jcwhitney has a similar universal slip on but only in 27 and 3? inch offerings.  I'll have to measure the length when I pick my new S40 up.

Okay one more time. For my Sportster muff conversion I need a muffler shop to craft a 7 inch extension that goes from what to what? Mean what size at one end and the other?

Thanks for the input of the Jc thumperclone, I'll avoid it.

Go to my page on bikepics.com (link below), print a picture of my adapter, take your header pipe and sportster muffler to the muffler shop, tell the mechanic you need a 10 degree bend in the middle of the adapter.

i have a 17" straight thru, sportster muffler on my wife's bike, the harley bracket, matched up with the suzuki mount perfectly, i used a harley muffler clamp, and the suzuki heat shields. i like loud pipes, and i think it sounds exactly as it should, you can hear it 1/2 mile away but not 1 mile.

(from front to back)its a piece of 1 3/4 tail pipe one end is flared to fit over end of head pipe then 10 degree bend (to kick muff out away from back brake lever and cable) then lightly sand outside rim of other end and cram it in the hd muff..

I have a Amal carb from Lancer & a Jardine muffler w/air pod type air filter and it works great, the performance difference is scary. So with the stock carb fixed right it should work great.
