Ok I installed the pipe I got from Lancer (thnx) w/o the baffle. Sounds great but man it's LOOUUDD :o My neighbors are gonna hate me! ;D

Anyway reelthing asked if my carb was stock and it is except for the tuning of the idle mix screw. It backfires about the same as before, maybe less. I rode the bike today (about 14 miles) and it seemed to run fine at all stages of the ride. In all gears and at all speeds. Popping back when slowing with the engine just like before. The only diffrences I saw seemed to be improvments, Not a single thing bad about the whole ride.

So with that being said... will it hurt my bike to run the open pipe?

These engines start out very lean and a low restriction pipe will make it more so. Lean conditions make them run much hotter inside and out - enough to damage it in the short term - maybe not depending on how you ride it - could you burn a hole in the piston - maybe - or get it hot enough to fry the oil.

It's really not very hard to swap the mainjet and lift the needle by grinding it down or replacement with a couple washers.

Definitely do the main jet,from an engine damage point of view and preferably the white spacer.

cool thats what I needed to know. What size jet would you reccomend and where do I get the jets? thnx guys

congrats on the pipe install!!I run a jardine pipe and yes it too is super loud!!Last year i ran a supertrapp and the neighbors complained hopefully they'll sell out this year[HA,HA].I put in 155 main jet and 75 pilot jet than filed the white spacer down to half.Bike runs feels stronger than a 650 hope that helps. It's an easy easy upgrade that you will greatly appreciate!

...it is beginning to feel like a 650 single should in the first place...

look at the 450cc singles that are on the race track, how much power do they make? 50+ would be my wager. If that is so doable then 40+ from a street 650 should be pretty freaking easy! And it is.

ok I got the spacer down to half and went ahead and did the spark plug door mod while I was at it. (its too simple not to). I still need to rejet. Will the 155 be ok or should I buy another size too and play around with it? Will I need a pilot jet too? If so what size? Can I get the jets at any shop or will it be a Suzuki part only?

I would recommend getting a 152.5 and a 155 main jet and trying each out to see which works best for you. You may even try a 157.5 but I really doubt you'll need larger than the 155. With a similar setup to yours I found no difference in performance between the two but got better mileage with the 152.5. Your results may be slightly different based on riding habits, climate, elevation, etc. I would recommend trying the pilot jet you currently have and if you have to back it out too far (say, past 3 turns) to tune it, upsize to a 55 pilot jet. Below is a quote from Lancer that I think covers general tuning procedures quite well. You may also try reading pertinent sections at DAN'S ONLINE

*for ex...if the turn in setting was at 1 turn out, and the turn out settig was 3 turns out, then the happy middle is 2 turns out.
**Turn slowly as you do this, no more than 1/8 or 1/4 turn at a time...then pause and wait 5 seconds or so in order to give the engine time to adjust, then turn again if necessary. If you have a tach, then you can set the pilot adjusting screw by just tuning for max rpm, then set idle speed.
***If after you have finished this process, the pilot adjusting screw is 2.5 -3 turns out, then you definitely need the next larger pilot jet. For myself, if I go over 2 turns out then I go up to the next size pilot jet.

When the pilot is properly adjusted, and assuming there are no exhaust leaks in the system, you will not have any backfiring. It is normal to have some mild crackling and popping on brisk-hard deceleration, but there will not be any backfiring.

thnx rob. I bought a 150 and a 152.5. They had to order the 155 so I told 'em never mind. Also had to order the pilot so I'm gonna leave the stock for now.
