what is the deal with part #7 in this pic:

my bike is an 86 - though the m/c may be from another bike - the clymer manual does not have it listed for either style m/c - bike bandit.com has two different stlye master cylinders listed for the 1986 savage - the one listed above and the one here:

The clymer manual says the only difference is the direction of the orafice and the photo looks exactly like the first one but with no "protector"

i got a new one in
suzuki pn# 59664-48B00

it does not appear to fit into anything , what holds it in place? or is it  just that i have a different master cylinder and this part is not needed,
any help would be appreciated.

If my memory is still working there is a defference in the angle of the fitting boss between P(pullback or buckhorn) and F (flat bar) models. It is buried in the archives somewhere. Max

Forget #7 it is a very course filter on the bottom of the reservoir to prevent the the soot to enter the brake pump.

The position of the outlet is irrelevant. Just the brakeline runs a bit different.

On my 93 with "superbike"steering bar I have fitted a brakepump from a 86/87 wich I bought from Anderson Vintage parts for 9.99 USD. The shipping cost was even higher at 14.56 USD to the Netherlands but it's new and works like a charme.

Correct.  In fact, the naming of the fiches tells you either P or F.  The first link is the (P)ullback and the second is the (F)lat.  My 98 has the first type (with the line attached to the side of the master cylinder) but the second one (with the line attached at the front) would work easily.  In general, it looks like the second one would fit either type of handlebar easily but the first one might be uglier on flat bars as you'd have to rotate the line away from the bar.
